Quentin is one of my all time favorite Top Gear presenters. I like his no-nonsense, matter of fact approach, and his sarcastic sense of humor was always waiting to come out.
Y I like his combination of humour and pithy presentation too. A real pity he didn't continue as a motor show presenter. Clarkson et al don't do it for me at all. Too childish.
The 205 1.9 GTi was the car we all wanted to have when we first started driving but out of our league and impossible to insure. I deeply regret not buying one in the second half of the 90s.
My 1.1 Style was made the same year this was broadcast! It’s been a true companion to me, having had it for 3 years it’s been the best first car I could have asked for. I’ve driven 500 mile round trips, had my first solo drive after passing my test and am even taking it to France this summer. Cannot see myself ever selling the little beauty.
I have a 1.1 205, mine is the 'look' variant it's such a pretty little car, my friends say, 'why do you've average an old car it's rubbish'. it really isn't though, I have only had 2 problems and considering its 25 years old that's pretty good, it's cheap to fix too so doesn't break the bank.
Your friends are wrong! Old cars are much more reliable than new ones since they use so few electronics and are also a lot funnier to be driven/don't worry so much about breaking them.
There's somebody who comes into my work with an older slightly scruffy looking rusty orange 205 diesel, makes you stop and look as it's so small next to all the big buldging new cars and the thinness of the 205 ,makes you look at how different cars were then and how far we've come.
that Peugeot 205 1 first registration was 18 04 1988 and date of liability 01 07 2002 that Peugeot 205 2 first registration was 14 09 1990 and date of liability 03 09 2001 that Peugeot 205 3 first registration was 01 08 1992 and date of liability 01 04 2005
We had a 1.4 can't remember what trim level think it was GR and even with 5 people in it still peltted about like nobody's business Bit brittle as Quentin says in the interior trim dept I mean the plastic and fabric quality couldn't have been any cheaper but nobody cared for as good as she drove
"Life expectancyy of 150000 miles for the diesel" lol:. Even a gazoline 205 can do all the way much more than 150k miles. For the Diesel engine of the 205, 300K miles mark is easy to reach.
Soussmeboules I have a 5 speed 1986 505 2.5 sedan TD here in the States.............it passed 600,000 miles 2 years ago................and still gets 35-37mpg at 70mph on Interstate 5 cruises to Los Angeles Area. Engine has never been apart.
hey, why do you think these cars are so popular in africa? They're indestructible. That's where the french car beats the german's one, they handle extreme mileage and poor service way better.
I have a 1.9 GTi as my daily driver and it's currently sat at 198,700 miles with 9 previous owners! Still an amazing car and fingers crossed it's still going strong :) I'm a little nervous of the 200,000 mark and there is always that little worry in my mind that something might go "bang" because of it's age and mileage, but on the whole it's a great little car. Still handles amazingly too and is so much fun on the country lanes!
as long as you stay away from the speedway it will do the job properly, but a advice you to look for the 1.4 two barrel carburated TU3S unit instead, it will give you 85bhp so it will be less noisy at high speed and even more fun to drive.
Alystas Agreed. It's pretty noisy on the motorway but I did push it to 90mph the other day! It will sit very happily at 70mph though so highways aren't out of the question.
Every 38,000 miles is far too conservative for a timing belt. Even on cars of this age, the timing belt will easily do 60,000 miles before needing to be changed, 38k is just a waste of time, money and resources. Modern timing belts are even better, and will easily exceed 140,000 miles before needing to be changed. Obviously, it's every 5 years in both cases though.

The soundtrack at the end leads into Clarkson's 306 review.
I have a 1990 CJ 1.4 with a twin choke carb. Love it so much.

Have a well-serviced 205GTI 1.9 and it's not cheap to buy one anymore...
£3k for a good GTi..... Not anymore!! lol

Did TG ever do the 309? Heard the GTI version of it was considered just as good if not better than the 205 because of the more balanced chassis.
Old but still good car.
Is the car being fixed by Lionel Richie?

The 205 was the last good Peugeot. They were all crap after that
nah 106 was still good, 206 is questionable and after that is all went to shit.
106 and 306 where epic! Anything after them....hell nah, absolutely rubbish, including the 206
Peugeot have now gone to shit since after 2004.
