      Get Ema to work on increasing stride angle. The greater the stride angle, more speed you can build off the first step, and the lower the body becomes. Right now she has short strides, small angle, sort of just bends down, or bends her knee down for those low balls. You instead can bring that knee down to the ground much more naturally with increased stride angle. This is what I noticed I have lost since taking breaks from playing most. Novak has serious stride angle for example...

    Ouch thats some killer training going on there. You'll always get trolls who write stuff they don't understand hiding behind their keyboard. Also one thing they don't understand is, it's a lot slower on video than in person. I've noticed it myself when I record myself it's so slow compared to the real thing. It made me realise how intense the pros play and the speed! Just like in this video. Keep up the good work!

    • @IntuitiveTennis
      @IntuitiveTennis  Рік тому +12

      It looks much worse on video that’s true

    • @tomsd8656
      @tomsd8656 Рік тому +1

      I don't see that it's slower on video. Maybe because my pace nowadays is slow period, live or video. But what I noticed watching the pro is how much smoother they are when watching live. I watched Roddick live. His serve didn't look any faster than on TV. In fact, I watched him on clay court , so his serve looked slower than on TV hard court match, but his strokes looked so much smoother.

    • @hobbes4583
      @hobbes4583 Рік тому +1

      @@tomsd8656 yeah. I saw roddick play a Spanish guy, Alberto Martin ( I think that was his name) down in Houston for Davis cup. Over 20 yrs ago now. They played on grass. Incredible how quick their reaction times were. You didn't see huge pace like Federer or del potro, but their hands and feet were so fast. Both baseliners playing on grass. Wasn't a great match, (roddick won in straights) but enlighterning on how difficult the level is even if it looks crap on TV.

    Great comments regarding the change of grip discussion. I spent 10 years playing with a Hawaiian grip until aged 21. When I restarted playing again a couple of years ago I have switched to western and removing the muscle memory of the angle of the racket face on contact has taken many many frustrating hours hitting forehands.

The missing explosiveness in all her strokes especially at low ball situation is very telling. Interesting show, as usual.
    Nik, have you discussed preparing to play an opponent you've never seen before? What can be learned in the warm up and the first few games of a match? When I played in tournaments I usually made a effort to observe players in my section (usually 4.0).
    I played a big fellow with a big serve. First set I lost 6-4. I could return his heavy serve but I could not keep my returns low enough. He always came in and usually put away his first volley.
    I had to change something. I moved close to the service line and quit swinging at his serve. I bunted back my returns short enough that he couldn't take them out of the air. I followed my returns to the net. Frequently he had to hit his first shot up to get it over the net. I won slightly more points volleying at the net than he did, winning 6-4. I enjoyed the match through the first two sets and wondered what he might do to win the 3rd set. What he did was walk away. He was disgusted by my play.

    One more great video. When you react on short ball, your body is slightly turned to the forhend or backhand side. But very important is to use your arms, on the most natural way. I saw many players prepare racket too early, too much back to forhend or backhand, this move drastically limit their speed. Its fine if ball is close to them so they need one or two steps, but not okay if they need run with full speed.

    Thank you for posting. I really like your videos. The only thing I would disagree on is the slice vs topspin when getting up to a short ball when you drop fed at the service line. Barely getting to a ball and putting topspin on the ball will made the ball sit up for opponent. A slice will not only give you a little time(if you’re using it as a approach), a slice or bunt will also stay low and cause the opponent to have to hit up on the ball making a volley a little easier. What do you think?

    Nic, I’m 74 years old.. play singles tennis at a 4.0 level. I go back to when I was taught to hold the racquet with a continental grip, period. Of course, I have evolved. I was using an Eastern forehand and a continental/ eastern for my one hander. About two years ago my instructor changed me to SW forehand grip. I can play with it now, but I was screwed up for a while. The rationale for the change was/ is so that I can hit out more on approach shots. With the Eastern I was hesitant to hit out…Question: Being mostly a flattish hitter, wouldn’t I be better advantaged to use an Eastern ? I think my biggest issue is my follow through… I tend to come across my body, and not over the shoulder….Maybe my finish bests suits an Eastern?And , why not change grips: Eastern in backcourt, SW on approach shots, etc.? Do players do this?Thanks, John
    Btw: I really look forward to your videos….excellent teaching.

    it's jealousy; that's why people make these negative comments. That being said, it's good to be motivation and some people can make some clever comments that make you laugh :) BTW, I know that trick Ema's doing... when you're tired, you ask coach a question to get him talking so you can get some rest :)

      He looks at his watch at some point during the talking. He knows that trick, and later made her work that much harder.

    Go Emma! And don't pay any mind to those trolls. I'm sure if they were to do these drills, I wouldn't be able to hear their feet moving, because all I would hear is them huffing and puffing 😂

    good vid.. perhaps you can develop some specific instruction or drills or cues on bending specifically. Just asking her to bend didnt seem to help her

    I really like Ema's video's ...so it's again a pleasure to see you guys working together again.... it was a fun workout ...as any workout when they say " i feel good" means the tank didn't get emptied.....errrmmm i think i got that quote from one of the Rocky movies!! The hardest thing climbing that mountain again is remembering being stripped of everything and building it block by block like the 1st time .... It's going to be tough as those knees may not be as mobile as before but surely wish her the best in going toe-2-toe with the best. The mentality of coach mode needs to be ditched though .... the chat about the best grip for a student is great ...but if that session was meant to be getting Ema into Pro level then those coach thoughts get in the way of Ema progressing 100% focused on herself. Be well

    It motivates me to watch you. Do you sometimes have muscular problems or Achilles tendon problems ?

    18:00 I am in a similar situation to Ema's western grip student, although nowhere near her age and talent. I've been playing tennis from ages 10-18 3/week and developed an extreme western grip (Hawaiian grip as I see it called nowadays) as I falsely believed that top spin was dependent on how you hold a racquet. I probably plateau'd at a 4.0 level (highschool me would've claimed 4.5 or even 5.0 lool) before leaving to college and took an extended break from tennis. Now, 10 years later I am back to playing tennis weekly but my youthful arm and shoulder is no longer there. I am still able to play decently with the grip but I'm noticing being extra sore in my rear delts. Nothing debilitating but as I am entering my 30s and picking up other athletic hobbies, I am much more aware of the fragility of the human body lol
    You mentioned you wouldn't attempt to change the student's grip and muscle memory if she were older like 15 as if she actually has a future in tennis, the attempt to change her form may be more detrimental in the long run of her career. However, if you received a student who played quite a bit as junior with the extreme western grip but now return to you as an adult with a gap in playing, would you attempt to fix the forehand? Or let them play with what they played with as a teenager? The couple times I've tried to recondition my grip just hitting against the wall had me running around to the other side for my ball one too many times for me continue down this path. But the ultimate goal is not to get ranked or receive an ATP point, but to be able to comfortably play the sport I fall deeper in love with everyday well into my 60s and 70s.

      I would change a Hawaiian grip, it’s too extreme
