Cedar Walton is definitely one of my heroes of jazz piano and with Art Blakely behind him it doesn't get any better than that, this first number he really demonstrates his command over the piano.
If you want to check out more music by this pianist; Walton appears on several albums with the Jazz Messengers in the early 60s. Of the many albums under his own name I can especially recommend ‘Eastern Rebellion” (1975) and “Cedar!” (1967). You can find them on UA-cam.
Great sextet with my favourite bone-player, Curtis Fuller, in an absolute fantastic line-up. Indeed -The Jazz Messengers- was by far the best hard-bop group ever! Dig this Gem, folks & Cheers!
In the Early 60s the standards were very high(no pun intended) a very harmonically advanced swinging apex just when all the questions that brought about that more avant approach were still mostly questions. The cats were young and trying hard working hard. It was a really smart period.
This was the year i was born, but the presence and music of these great guys is so strong, that it feels as if they play here and now! I forgot that i could pause the video to get me a pullover, in worry i could miss something of that precious concert. ;)
The Jazz Messengers were the greatest small band ever and here is the evidence. Cedar Walton was such a great pianoman and I love his tunes. How can anyone not like this.
Cedar does sound great and his version of That Old Feeling on "Three Blind Mice" is what made me his lifelong fan. I heard and liked him before but that arrangement was so WALTON that it made me aware that here was somebody more than just great jazz pianist. This version is even better than the one from San Remo IMO. Thanks for sharing!
All have their own sounds while Masters! Those who have their own sounds and approaches are few and far between in 2017 no matter how fast or how many choruses they can play on Giant Steps!
BLACK IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL COLOUR CAUSE YOU CAN DO SO MUCH WITH IT !! THE BEST THING THAT EVERY--HAPPENED TO A440......WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT MESSAGE????

Julian Bryson you were right. This is definitely one of Wayne Shorter’s greatest performances. Thanks for sharing!
Art Blakey never left his audience disappointed. you always felt like you had a good meal afterwards.

Utterly beautiful Wayne on I Didn’t Know What Time It Was.

Wayne Shorter has one of the most unique voices on sax. So human and voice like.

Art was a melodic drummer, love that!!

Have enjoyed listening to the Messengers since the early days with Clifford Brown and Horace Silver
Shorter kicks ass

Cedar Walton playing so elegantly and swinging on his feature, what a slick arrangement he did on That Old Feeling!
Blakely was a BEAST!!!!!!
Great performance and well recorded for 1963. Thanks for uploading!
God, I love those suits!
Wayne Shorter made me happy on this recording, I thought it was very expansive his approach.

Unbelievable! Can you imagine how amazing it would be to be so talented and make such beautiful music.
What you're hearing is an unbelievable amount of hard work and dedication on display.
What a sublime release of tension when the full horn section finally enters in Shorter's arrangement of "I Didn't Know What Time it Was" ...
The best of the best! OMG the version of Caravan is astonishing!

@walt7500 were referring to your life ?
I've never heard of Cedar Walton. Now I know!
I think he was with Charles Mingus a lot.....
jean-marc Robbio you’re thinking of Jaki Byard. To my knowledge, Cedar never recorded with Mingus or was in his band.
My error I was thinking of Mal Waldron@@intrepidpooch
