    Thanks so much for the small details! I couldn't get mine to gather & it was because of the tension setting! (Beginner)

    The gathering foot can gather one layer and sew on a second layer in one step. The shirring foot only shirrs one layer. It cannot attach a second layer as a gathering foot can.

    If you need to wind by hand you can put your bobbin on the handle of your seam ripper and it gives you something to hold on to.

    thank you very much for your educational video. I just received a vintage shirring foot from ebay got it attached to my singer and was wondering what the heck was going on. the info about change to a gathering stitch and changing the tension made a whole lot of difference. thanks again for teaching me something new/

    I would have liked to see the back of the finished stitches with the elastic in the bobbin.

    Thanks so much for responding. I have the gathering foot which I've played with every day, but not actually made anything. Now I'll go get the shirring foot to add to the collection. ;-)

    Yup, you have to have the foot to shirr on the machine. However, you can always shirr and gather by hand. It just take a bit longer.

    Question: I just did some shirring with a regular foot. What’s the advantage of the shirring foot?

    HI Denise! I'm using my Brother LB6800PRW - I've had it for years and love it! And yes, it has a built in thread cutter -super handy!

    Thank you for this, I have a Brother FS101 and tried to give shirring a go but no luck, didn't know about that screw on the bobbin case. I think I will have another go at it & adjust that screw next time 🙂❤

    Su longitud de puntada debe ser 5. Traiga su tensión para arriba también. Cuanto más tensión de la aguja, más se reúne.

    On some machines you do not wind the elastic thread by hand. You need to check your manual to see what they recommend. Mine says to wind it like regular thread and it works perfectly.

    you dont have to have the special foot to shirr, you can use a regular foot but wind the shirring elastic onto the bobbin at tension. gives the same result!

    I bought the Shirring foot from you (just the single one) I have a Brother LS1520 machine and I can't get the gathers it just sews a straight stitch...what am I doing wrong? I have my thread distance at 10 on this machine..normally tension is on 5 and I went both to low numbers and high numbers and still couldn't get the ruffles :) I am using a little thicker material...but not terrible thick..kind of like indoor/outdoor material but not the type that's for umbrellas and furniture mine is more for pillows so it's not as thick. I have tried to put tension behind it with my finger and still no ruffles. I keep removing the stitch and trying again. I was so excited to have pretty ruffles the easy way this time. Is there anything I can try? Thank You!

      Lori Abraham I'm not sure about the ruffled foot, but you can definitely use elastic thread with the shirring/gathering foot.

    what's the pro's and con's shirring foot/feet and a ruffler?

    • @SewingPartsOnline
      @SewingPartsOnline  6 років тому +1

      The pros of using a Ruffler is that you can use that foot to gather multiple layers of fabric whereas the Shirring Foot is only used to gather a single layer of fabric. A ruffler is more difficult to install and use. I hope this helps!

    Perhaps recommendations have changed in the nearly 5 years since this video was made...because Brother information is that the bobbin case with a green screw is not to be adjusted at all and to do that would harm the case and make it useless. There's suppose to be a Brother bobbin case with a pink screw or a plain screw that's OK to adjust...but I can't find one anywhere. Does Sewingpartsonline have a brother pink screw bobbin case for a Brother XR 1355? I've looked there but can't tell what the screw color would be.

    • @SewingPartsOnline
      @SewingPartsOnline  7 років тому

      Hi, Myra! I actually have one of the Brother machines with the green screw in my sewing machine collection. The manual told me not to touch the screw as well. I did and it still works wonderfully. I have my theories as to why they say not to touch the screw, but I won't get into it ;)
      Many machine manufacturers make 3 different bobbin cases with 3 different tension settings. That way, all you have to do is switch out the bobbin case whenever you need more or less tension. For your machine, I will have to contact Brother directly. I'll let you know as soon as I find out. Thank you!

    • @hummingbirdlady11
      @hummingbirdlady11 7 років тому

      Appreciate your response. Hope you get more information than I did. Keep in mind ...my Brother machine is an XR 1355. I am aware of a "bobbin work kit" from Brother...but that kit is at least $50 and isn't indicated for my machine. It's a puzzle to me as to where and what other sewists get to just have an adjustable bobbin case.

      Hi! Unfortunately, Brother is closed for the holiday and won't be available until Wednesday. I will message you as soon as I hear back from them on Wednesday. Honestly. my bobbin case on my Brother LB6800 still works perfectly since adjusting the tension (it also has a green screw). I had to loosen it to accommodate elastic thread. Once I was finished, I turned the tension screw back to its original position. No problems at all.

    • @hummingbirdlady11
      @hummingbirdlady11 7 років тому

      No rush for the info. It's really going all out with customer service for you to do this. Since you say yours worked with no problems...I do believe you about the green screw bobbin case working for you after adjusting it for elastic thread. With that said I will patiently wait for what info Brother relays to you. Thanks.

    • @SewingPartsOnline
      @SewingPartsOnline  7 років тому

      Hi, Myra! I'm so sorry, but Brother doesn't have another bobbin case they can guarantee will fit your machine. I know that is frustrating. You can always keep an extra green dot bobbin case for adjusting the tension. This is the one for your machine: goo.gl/ixYhq4
