I know now that the song is about music... but as our subscribers know I don't want to know what it's about or research it's meaning before... I like to make my own mind up and then find out from you lovely people :) I recorded this when we also did the reaction as I always do with Lyrical corners. Hit that like button if you would be so kind :) Much more to come!!

You can read this song in both ways. As a person who loves you can save your soul and your life, also music can be the key to change your life, specially for a young boy or girl looking for their role in the world. I'm sure that Damiano loves when the listeners give their personal interpretation.

I understand why you would want to break down the lyrics of a song... I'm more confused as to why you're breaking down the translation of the lyrics made by a random youtube user.
And no the problem isn't the random guy, they did a decent job, the problem is that you can't really translate poetry, you can try and explain its meaning at best. A lot is bound to be lost in the translation, no matter how good the translator is.
You could try and rewrite the lyrics (and you must be good at it) trying to capture the same meaning, the same style and mood of the original, but that's not what happened here.
This is almost a word-by-word translation, like google translator but objectively better. Still there are many words that have been translated poorly, in the context of the song.
I don't like "motionless" for "fermo", it's more "stopped", "held still".
I don't like "cursing" for "maledire", it sounds like (and substitutes for) "dire male" which it's better translated with bad-mouthing (it makes a lot more sense that she didn't listen to them). "prendere e partire" is a saying that shouldn't be taken literally ("to pick up and leave") its real meaning is the opposite in a way ("to hit the road on a whim").
I could go on. "il freddo qua si fa sentire" yeah, it means "it's getting cold in here", but it's not the usual way of saying it "inizia a far freddo qui", it feels more painful. It's not a statement about the temperature of the room, it's about him feeling it. I have no idea how to convey that in English, something about "biting cold" maybe? "terra ferma" isn't "motionless land", but "dry land" as opposed to the sea. It's not that he can't move on, it's that he wants more freedom, he wants the sea where he can finally become the storm (express himself in full). The sea as a metaphor for freedom, for breaking free from some form of confinement can be found in "Coraline", too.
Bottom line, you can't analyze the lyrics w/o understanding them, based on a rough translation in a different language.
I think Marlena isn't a person, it's the personification of inspiration itself. He is an artist, he was an outcast from society, a real mess, but Marlena found him, and set him free with just a gaze. With Marlena the artist lived the perfect life, w/o boundaries. But eventually she left him, and now he's asking her to come back. Without inspiration an artist is nothing.

Marlena is the one that saves him from being a shadow, she is their muse, the personification of their love for music.. so Marlena named in many other songs is not actually a real person.
‘Marlena come back home’ because even during that journey he felt her disappearing.. he was afraid she might leave him at some stage.. and so his urgent need to express himself through music, fading away

It's not she that is covered in thorns, but him. He was coverd in thorns, with a thousands snake bites (could be all the bad words that someone said to him) motionless, when she picked him up. Also, he was rejected ,( the doors closed on houses) but luckily she was with him (the muse, inspiration Marlena) ...
So....he was left without inspiration , on the ground, in thorns, all doors clossed, rejected, people saying bad things that felt like snake bites , feeling like he will dissapear if he doesn't do his art, his music, but she showed up , picked him up, now the clouds over his head have dissapeared, and the sky is transparent, and the Sun showed all the uglines in those who have hurt him.....
Salty tear.... Although it's obvious that the tear is salty he needed the word fot the metric reasons...could he use some other word, other attribute , I don't know.....
So, he have a huge ambitions with his music, his art, to go sooo high where human eye can't see, and now when she is there, he'll do it no matter what it takes , he will overcome any obstacle(mountain) even wounded ( with blood on the hands) . Yesterday he was quiet (without inspiration) but today (when shw is there) everyone will hear him(he'll be a storm) . Remember that two times he said he was left only with peace of papper and half of the cigarette.....

Marlena is a muse who symbolises his art, that is the music, the creativity. And what are artists afraid the most? To loose their inspiration, because they feel they would be lost without it. Marlena transformed him into an artist, a better person, taking him to un extraordinary journey, but now he have met her, he can't live without her anymore. So "come back home" means "always stay with me, don't leave me alone". They uses this name "Marlena" very often in the songs of their first album always with reference to their artistic journey.

Bro I reply to your last question:
we know for sure that at this time Marlena never left him/them because she inspired all the songs of their second album, thanks to whom all the world managed to get to know their desperate urge to communicate through their music..
As I said in my other comment below, Marlena is not a real person but the personification of their love for music..
What we fans hope is that Marlena will stay with them forever so to enjoy more of their music ‘until time will bring the white on our hair’
    Thanks a lot for reacting

Marlena is the muse, she's a metaphor for the band's creativity, inspiration, love of music, life and art and beauty, she also represents the values that the band believe in: freedom, equality and self expression. As these concepts are abstract, the band wanted to give them a woman's name to allow the listener to connect emotionally. Marlena is the personification of everything that matters to them. When you listen to songs that reference Marlena, they can be read as deeply romantic songs about a lover or they can be read as poetry about the nature of creativity itself. I'd say Måneskin are the quintessential idealists. They feel that art and creativity is their highest calling in life but Damiano shows awareness that art is not an easy path to follow, you meet a lot of resistance on the way including those who disagree, those who want you to fail, those who oppose your values, those who fear you and those who are simply jealous that they did not have the courage to follow their own path. Damiano's lyrics show great awareness of this, he refers to being bitten by snakes, covered in thorns. These are the people and/ or circumstances that keep him and the band 'motionless' and unable to fulfill their dreams. The muse/ Marlena/inspiration or whatever you want to call her, is what lifts them up and allows them to keep going.
My take on the line "I had a creased jacket and cuts on my wrists." is less that they were a bad person before Marlena came to the rescue but more just they didn't have themselves together, and that they engaged in actions or thoughts that were self destructive in some way.
The artist's ambition is evident in lines such as "This city will lean out when it sees us coming." I want to get where the human eye cuts off." These are the words of someone with big dreams.
We also get a sense of bloody minded determination in lyrics such as "she didn't listen to those bastards and their cursing." and "with bloody hands I'll climb all the peaks."
Unfortunately inspiration is fleeting and It can leave us in an instant. This is the artist's worst nightmare and Damiano refers to the doubts and fears experienced in moments when it leaves him. He is terrified that he will cease to exist, he will have no reason to live and will lose his sense of self and his purpose.
Interestingly, in a interview about Måneskins lyrics, an interviewer once asked Damiano what he fears the most and he answered that his biggest fear was to have nothing to say, he fears his own silence more than anything.
I'm a huge fan of Måneskin's lyrics and I am also curious to know if Marlena will continue to play a role in the band's music and lyrics in the coming years. I love the concept, my question is whether the act of giving Marlena her name, itself gives more power and weight to those feelings of self doubt. Food for thought!

The bad thing about translations from Italian to English is that the past participle of a verb in Italian has the gender, both in the singular and in the plural, while in English it doesn't, so it often happens that you simply use the past participle, but in the translation into English, the sense of who the subject of the sentence is is lost:
"She picked me up from the ground (when I was) covered in thorns"

  • @Nobody-uq9bq
    @Nobody-uq9bq 3 роки тому +6

I like that you take time to go deep into the lyric, even if it is not in English. I also try to understand every song that I listen to.
The song is an allegory. Marlena is his muse. When he says “before you I had a creased jacket and cuts on my wrists" he's probably telling what his life was like before he started writing songs and singing. I think the song is about the fear of losing inspiration and losing himself again. The phrase repeated several times “Marlena come back home, I’m afraid to disappear” maybe express this concept.
The video is also allegorical. The ballerina that at the beginning can’t even walk, represent the same concept. I think the lyric, the images and the passion in his voice match well.

Genesis and Meaning of Torna a Casa
The genesis of "Torna a Casa" has a singular history: it was chosen as a single which person then announces the release of the album "Il Ballo della Vita", but the presentation was never made in a studio or in front of journalists. Måneskin chose to go home, performing on the street as at the beginning of their career, giving fans the opportunity to listen to the song for the first time exclusively live, without using digital platforms, initially, to sponsor the new single. Through a game of coordinates published on their social networks, with the sole purpose of directing their fans to secret places, they with their new single in two different cities: Piazza del Popolo, in Rome, and Piazza XXIV Maggio, in Milan.
The video for “Torna A Casa” was then published on 01/10/2018 on UA-cam, a gold mine with 122 million views and 5 platinum records.
A Damian in ivory white opens the dance, accompanied by a veiled dancer, a slave to white prejudices and commanded by the puppeteer par excellence: society.
Meanwhile, Vic, Thomas and Ethan wander around this silent and mystical villa in search of "their own place in the world", until the 4 reunite to perform the second refrain, accompanied by the urgent and necessary movements. of that Marlena who wants to live for herself, in her characteristic colors, blue and red, which will then dominate the cover of the album "Il Ballo Della Vita".
«Marlena is the Venus of the group, the personification of our freedom, creativity, life. Torna a casa is a piece to listen to with closed eyes and an open mind. Open your mind to go home. "
Quoting Alice and her Mad Hatter, the fear of disappearing in a deep dream is great, but the courage to start over and to believe in oneself, despite the mistakes and mistakes made, is stronger, beyond
everything. (this is a rewiew of Maneskin official fansclub instagram )

He's been trapped by snakes who bite him; he's covered in thorns. So, the ballerina is him. His inspiration leaves him occasionally, and without it, I'll lose myself, my identity. Tears ARE salty. Where the human eye can no longer see I think means to go to the world of inspiration, beyond that which human perception can see and human rationality understand. As for slits on the wrist, that could be someone who self-harmed, i.e. someone who had emotional issues, mental health issues. Anyway, that's how I see it.

8:52 the second part represent the scenario when Marlena (inspiration) is near (sunny day). Interesting seeing that people looks less dangerous, in the first part they shut the doors, in this part their weakness is highlighted... in the first part he thinks about her red cheek, in the second part che wipe the tear from his face.

Madlena, and it surprised me too ... even if it is a hypothesis, it is the union of the names MARia MaddaLENA = MARLENA (Mary Magdalene from the Bible). And you can see it partly from the text and partly from the details of the video. Maybe it's a publicity stunt but the music, lyrics, Damiano's voice and the video are spectacular. "to disappear" means no longer having the inspiration to write songs and that is why he asks Marlena to "come back home" and then go back to his "pen"

The band has been asked several times since this song got out whether or not "Marlena came back home" 😂 Did she come back home? Who knows but don't ask them LMAO
Lacrime salate is a very simple Italian expression, because tears taste salty so basically he's crying enough for him to taste his tears.
I think the song is about him/them being lost and on the wrong path until they found music/Marlena. Their muse inspired them to rise above their condition, ignore people who hate them and to leave for better places. Unfortunately inspiration is fickle so Marlena can leave them at the drop of the hat and it scares the band. In the first album there are many references to the band's insecurity of loosing their inspiration/artiststry considering they had to get over many challenges to get where they were.

I had a similar interpretation when I first heard the song too as I m not Italian and didn't know what they had said about Marlena in their interviews... I guess it works on two levels ... If you consider Marlena a real person, it's a beautiful love song.... but since they've said Marlena is imaginary - their muse/a personification of inspiration or their love for music, I guess he ' s talking about the fear of losing his inspiration or sth like that ? Either way it's a wonderful song, so poetic and such a depiction of the beauty of the Italian language (probably the "best-sounding" one for songs)
Edit: you must know the official video for I wanna be your slave is out... so we'd love to see what u think about that too 😁 😁

Like every artist you are inspired by some unearthly power when you write lyrics so Damiano dedicated a lot of songs to Marlena who can represent music, poetry, art in general, because he needs her to elevate himself and create beautiful songs. Without it he's lost, he doesn't want to be a common man, he feels to be lucky and doesn't want to lose the special gift that Marlena=art has given him. He wants her to teach him "Il ballo della vita" ("The dance of life" which is another song in the album). Damiano tattooed the words on his chest to celebrate the release of the first Måneskin's album.

When you did in the first place the reaction to the music video, I immediately wrote a comment saying that Marlena was not to be taken as a real person. She is in fact Maneskin inspirational muse, metaphorically she can be interpreted as being "the music" personification.
Your colleague read my hint but forgot to tell you about it.
Anyway you did fine in understanding the underlying feelings in chronological order: first he had a lack of inspiration and then "she" helped him to find it back.
The ballerina in the video represents Marlena, the struggling muse who had to come back to her straight.

  • @bachisio2140
    @bachisio2140 3 роки тому +4

Now c’mon Brit Pops React, do you really think you ‘need to be a poet’ in order to understand poetry as you say in your reaction?
Of course not! You need to be a poet in order to WRITE poetry. It suffices to be a human in order to understand and interpret poetry. You just need patience.
Poets would otherwise write for themselves if they were not to be understood by others, even if you read the most obscure of poems, there would still be a reason for that ‘obscurity’. And searching for that reason(s) is one of the most beautiful experiences in life. Trust me.
If a text continues to be obscure/dubious, you just need to share your ideas with another person’s. This is what everybody calls the essence of communication. And sharing relevant content is something of value in life.
You say you ‘didn’t want other people to influence your ideas’. And that’s correct. But I wouldn’t do a reaction on the text/lyrics if the text continues to be obscure. What is the value of saying ‘I’m not so sure about that…’ in a reaction which pretends to be explaining the meaning of a text? - A reaction on the text is justified if you interpret and offer opinions and give solutions to the lyrics.
I’m sure that after reading all the comments below everything was better… Am I right? Everybody needs the help of others. That’s why we are classified as social beings, aren’t we?
