- This week, I taught myself how to make a radiator cover which will also serve as a focal point in our living room.

Aww, cheers :) We thought exactly the same for our bedroom makeover last year! We now have a tall upright radiator with mirror and it takes up far less space and is multipurpose :)

Good idea to fit a room sensor radiator valve or it will close down in a jiffy or take the head off the existing and it will never close if you don't mind continuous uncontrollable heat. Lovely job. Getting my MDF delivered tomorrow.

I once shook a ketchup bottle at a friends house; the top came off and the ketchup flew across the room, up the wall and along the ceiling. The conversation suddenly stopped :)
Sorry to hear about ur wife’s inability in the DIY arena. In my household it’s the opposite. I’m the diy er and my husband not. Over 19 years I have been able to train him into a labourer and heavy stuff lifter.

Years ago before I knew anyghing about joinery and had no tools, I made all my radiator covers with angle irons and plastic joiner blocks, haha! theyre still standing.

I made the same project back last year. I opted against using the mdf sealer and the paint finish I had was great without it. But like you, totally made sense to make one rather then buy one 👍
The place I bought the MDF screen advised not to buy the sealer because they thought it was expensive PVA glue, but deep down wanted to try it. But so many people since have said that cheap undercoat did fine. I'm just not sure why this product has so many great reviews as it soaked up almost 500ml which cost a fiver. Also, I've since read the label on my satinwood and it says self under coating, so won't bother on my 2nd one.

Nice job chick. I was thinking about you when I made my garden gate last week. It's by no means perfect but I'm proud of it. The old one is knackered but I'm going to try and use parts of it cut down to make a gate mid way to stop the dog running round the entire garden.

Thanks! My maths is awful too 😂😂 It was really simple... I initially just held a thick book either end and measured the length. Then after deciding the strips would be 15cm wide, I subtracted that from length and divided it by two (or three) sections, rounded it up and got my horizontal cuts.
I too was contemplating just white emulsion as spotted it's often used for them :)

I think though that radiator covers are certainly a fashion choice just like coving etc. Personally I like the radiators as you can easily hang wet clothing on them and it dries quickly.
I would guess that there is also a restriction by covering the radiator as to how much heat comes out, therefore costing more energy to heat the home. I know it's well vented but heat must be more directional.
I bought a MDF sealer paint from either B&Q or Wickes, can't remember which. Just looks like a white paint. Only issue I see with sealing with PVA is that you would need to add water to it to thin it down, therefore adding the one element that MDF does not like, water is not good anywhere near MDF so worth the extra expense.
Thanks Paul :) Yes, radiator covers do seem to be a very personal choice. Thoroughly enjoyed making it as it's taught me a few basics to make a recycling centre and it's going well :)
The sealer I used seemed to be very watery.. thinner than milk, but the MDF soaked it right up. Haven't read the label, but don't really know what's in it.

Both Joe and Rob have since said it's rubbish (or expensive) 😂😂 but the reviews are really good. My only gripe about it is I nearly used a £5 500ml pot on this cover. The hardware store I bought the screen off said PVA solution would be better, but thought I'd try it out first.

Nice job. Very smart. Never used MDF sealer just MDF primer and two top coats. Wickes keep that sort of screen but I see the website shows it all on clearance so maybe they won't be stocking it anymore. I also use Medite MR MDF as the quality is good and the edges less fluffy than B&Qs. If you need a nice smooth cut edge don't bother sanding before priming. Sand after a coat of primer and it can be sanded very smooth.
Thanks for the tips! I'll try looking for that MDF if I want to do some more :) Also, yes, I spotted it was all clearance there too and my local stores didn't have it.
You might want to consider MRMDF if you routing profiles as you get a much better finish. Normal mdf is quite fluffy you needs lots of sealing and sanding and on those flues you'll lose the sharpness.

Amazing work again. Girl is bringing it with the biscuits! Inb4 your producing Japanese saw dove tails. The sealer for mdf not a bad idea, i personally have reservations with it and think is will be the next asbestos in buildings saga. As allways great work and content.

I found the screening fairly easy to find the thing that got me was the price! Couldn’t find anything less than £40 for the size I needed. And for that price I managed to pick one up in great condition second hand. The screening is really easy to come by on eBay if you’re happy to wait for postage though :)

If you want to do it on the cheap then you can do the holes using a router and a couple of easy to make jigs. 2x bit of mdf offcut, one with 1 dowel spaced from bit and one with 2 dowels, same spacing. 1st row you clamp a straight edge and do first hole, then use single dowel jig for accurately spacing 1st row. then you remove the straight edge and you use the jig with 2 dowels. you place the 2 dowels in an L shape with the router bit and it will keep the column holes at 90 degrees. Time consuming yes but you wouldn't need to do the whole sheet, just the part you see and you could do a rabbet in the frame to hold in place...

Hello Carpenters's Daughter …. Around 35 years ago radiator covers where removed all over because they jack up your heating bills just as well as long drapes hanging over the radiators do. So ok maybe things have changed since? However I would never cover up the thermostat because that will effect your heating. Just mentioning this as a tip incase you should consider doing this in another room as well. Otherwise? …. Beautifully done. Nice to see you are so happy with it.
The perforated MDF sheets might not be available in the large single sheet, but most DIY stores sell smaller sheets. As your design is in two panels, you could have used 2 panels. If you can only find narrower sheets, usually sold as cabinet door panels, then making your radiator cover into a 4 panel design would work as all the MDF panel joints would be hidden inside the radiator cover.
MDF sealer makes a huge difference to the final paint finish. If you can't get the sealer use PVA applied in a thin coat on all cut edges and a thin coat 50/50 PVA + water mix for the surfaces. The water might make the MDF fluff rise on the first coat. When it's dry sand with a fine sandpaper and repeat. Like with all finishes, the more time you spend on the preparation the better the end result. You may need to sand and seal a couple of times, even with MDF sealer. A gloss paint roller (foam) is good for applying PVA.
The end result looks fantastic as usual.

Oh another tip, buying wood and sheet materials from your local timber merchant or building suppliers is generally cheaper and they will deliver.

Looks very smart, Automatic Bleed Valves are essential when fitting rad covers else you'll have to dismantle the cover to access the manual bleed valve, having the Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV) and Lockshield Valve (LSV) within the enclosure is a mistake you'll later regret the TRV will be unable to monitor the room temperature, forget about convection, there will not be enough air movement for the wax stat in the TRV to operate to the room ambient temperature, also no (quick) access to the LSV in an emergency and no way to adjust the temperature of the TRV. Nothing wrong with rad covers just ensure the TRV and LSV are outside the enclosure, I worked as an electrician mainly fitting Central Heating controls for a local authority, these problems became the bane of our lives a few years ago.

Instead of the expensive fretwork we use the offcuts from the curtains so they match and staple them in. Easily removable to chuck in the washer.👍

Ah... that's the first place I went to, but called their head office and none were anywhere in the business. I'm wondering whether it's because it's almost Summer, so perhaps they don't sell as much time of year. Once I hear about stock levels again, I'll pin the link!
Excellent. Persevere with the track for your saw - better still, add a cross piece so you only have to measure the near side and cut perfectly square panels.
Try Peter Millard's 10 Minute Workshop for shaker doors - so similar to what you were doing there. And both him and Andy at Gosforth Handyman for painting MDF - and lots more.
They both do a podcast called Measuring Up - I find it just the job for ironing, complicated cooking and massive washing-up.

Bear in mind fitting a radiator cover will reduce the radiators efficiency by around 25%, with the lower flow temperatures used in new installations radiator covers will be unusable in most scenarios unless the radiator is massively oversized. When this video was made it didn't matter, becoming more important now though. Lovely job regardless, looks great.

I agree with comments that you work very professionally.
One question though which has always sprung to mind about radiator covers. Do they effect the efficiency of a radiator? Granted you have included plenty ventilation in yours. Also the TRV definitely will be rendered useless which is fine if the valve is turned to full.

Thank you :) I'm yet to find out in the winter. It may be difficult to tell in this room though as we have two radiators (it used to be a very cold room). However, Rob who recommended the vents says there should be no issues.
They can slow the heat initially (10-15 mins), but once the cover is warm heat will still radiate and the vents will allow normal convection currents to do their thing.
