The golden years of Indycar: 80`s and 90`s. Fantastic cars and drivers. Good calendar. Races from march until october. I definitly miss those years.
Think everyone misses these day, hopefully they will return
Then Tony George came in and sucked the momentum out of Indycar pretty fast by the end of the decade. To bad the CART owners were to dumb to let Tony George do what he wanted.
rob mush this set indycar racing back 20 year I think but I also think things are heading in the right direction now, cars are missing 200 to 300hp but i think indycar is planning on changing that.
@@marchewitson6191 They are but they need to make it more exciting, free up the revs, go back to methanol with the new engine on 21, and open the chassis regs so another player can join in.
TheUsmc1488 yes I agree. I think there’s something missing, for me it’s the machinery not being pushed to its limits like it used to be because there’s no competition there, back then the drivers were like test pilots, speed was squeezed out of every part.
this is IndyCar as I remembered it growing up, packed grandstands, different chassis and high revving engines with awesome sound.
Yep now it's just Chevy and Honda with the same Delara engines.
Why can’t we get on a time machine and stop the split from ever happening.
@@robminmonaca just gotta go back and ask guy trollinger to aim differently
@@runrafarunthebestintheworld chassis...
Can we all take a minute and appreciate the quality of this video
Yep bring back Michigan and the triple crown! 🏎🏁🇺🇸
2021 rewatching those good old 1990s IndyCar races.
Look at the size of that grid 😱 1994 was a mega year, keep these races coming Indycar 🏁
Yep lots of car manufacturers too. Which is also cool but now it's just Chevy and Honda with Dallara engines.
Then Tony George started to get his IRL together and wrecked all of what INDYCAR Accomplished.
@@runrafarunthebestintheworld Now its just Dallara with Chevy and Honda engines....i think thats what you meant
@@aaronisgrateThe problem is that there's so few chassis manufacturers left. Lola? Gone (though I've heard its reopening next year). Reynard? Gone. March? Gone. Eagle? I don't know how, but they're somehow still around, just not in IndyCar. G-Force? Absorbed into Panoz. Panoz? Only does sports cars now. Riley & Scott? Now known as Riley Technologies, and only does sports cars now. Porsche? Gave up on Indycar. McLaren? Only does F1 now. Watson? Gone. Parnelli? Gone. Chaparral? Gone. Wildcat? Gone. Lightning? Gone. Galmer? Gone. DeltaWing? Their ICONIC concept was too radical a departure. Vollstedt? Gone. IAM? Gone. Coyote? Gone. Finley? Gone. Kingfish? Gone. Antares? Gone. Swift? Hasn't built racecars since 2013. Falcon? Never turned a single lap.
The only open wheel customer chassis builders left are Dallara, Stohr, Tatuus, and some other minor manufacturers. Stohr and Tatuus are clearly not up to the challenge of building anything that isn't a chassis for junior categories, and IndyCar doesn't seem to want chassis competition, even though Roger Penske is one of the old CART heads, and he should want to bring that "engineering arms race" back. The only series where teams still develop and build their own chassis these days is F1, which has devolved into "The Red Bull Show" (Ferrari's win this past weekend at Singapore, I can't explain, but at least it wasn't Red Bull).
I'm Brazilian and when I think of auto racing, I get the head. Indy car. The best motorsport championship in the world. It's a pity that here in Brazil, it's not broadcast on indy car. I hope one day I will be able to watch a race in the United States of America, my dream.
As an American from Illinois not far from indycar heartland, we love international fans like you. Brazil probably has the third richest history in American motorsports behind the US and Canada
Lol!!!!! I know it's childish, but watching that crewman totally bite it at 0:49.......awesome!!
I love to watch these old races, especially when it's my favorite cars, Indycars! 💎👑🔥
Look at those full grandstands. This was IndyCar. This is what Tony George destroyed. What a grade A fool he was.
Please Indycar. Bring back the series to Michigan!!
Tracks like this is a must for IndyCar racing
Michigan 500 in IndyCar again
Besides seeing a Goodyear win, was great to see so many smaller teams stay in the race and get great results.
A rare day that saw all of the big dollar teams drop out via either wrecks or engine & other mechanical failures...
Those were such incredible days... God I loved that race and that track back in the 80s and 90s. It was heaven for speed, sights and sounds. It was electric.
I would love to see IndyCar take 1 of the 2 Detroit races and move it to Michigan.
"Last time I checked, Detriot is in Michigan" says anyone who doesn't follow racing.

Best sounding for these IndyCar engines
And 2001 🏁
Yes I want the Elmore Engines back to compete with Delara because those Elmore Engines work great for the NASCAR Truck Series.

That on-car camera shot from the rear quarter needs to be brought back!!!
every IndyCar Michigan race I watch, it makes me want the Michigan 500 to return more and more.
For this... for the future.. IndyCar!!!
We were there. Drove up from Cincinnati and hung out with my brother and sister-in-law, who still live in Michigan. First time. We went again to the US 500.
2.5 hours of pure bliss!!
Thank you for posting all these old races. So awesome!!!!
Great racing at MIS and the stands were full
Just listen to the sound of those engines! And look at the size of the crowd in the grand stands! This is what racing used to be about, please somebody fix today’s rubbish!

I really felt bad for both Boesel and Simon.I was sitting on the top row of the main grandstand that day and Boesel certainly seemed to be on his way. This was a good,if not great, race.Had it been only 400 miles it would have been better,as the attrition back then was terrible...As I was walking out, I heard another fan say "The race no one wanted to win." That kind of sums it up.
Man the speed of these things and this was nearly 30 years ago!!! Come on indycar the drivers want it the fans want it, bring this back and bring this super speedway back. The speed, the noise, the drivers, and the cars brought the fans and sponsors. You know the saying, "Build it and they will come".
TheUsmc1488 well Jay Frye just became the president of Indycar. I think we are getting closer to those days again. Thank god Tony George doesn’t have real power positions in Indycar.
MIS (owned by ISC) said "No"
It's impossible to get a crowd that size at Michigan nowadays. Especially if you're NASCAR...
It must've been a strange feeling for the Team Penske drivers to come back to Michigan for the race with 200 horsepower less after having tested the Mercedes-Benz/Ilmor I500 engine at that track in the weeks prior to the Indy 500.
Cart ruled! The deliveries look so good. The Duracell car of Raul looked fantastic. Close but no cigar.
My favorite Scott Goodyear victory in IndyCar. 🏁🇨🇦
Ahh yes, when cigarette manufacturers sponsored cars and the entire race! God I want to go back to those days
Those Marlboro Penske cars were the best looking.
Bring back the Michigan 500!!!
PLEASE
Love that sound !!
MIS heck of a track..
Terrific traffic jam going and coming..
Not a track to spectate on a cloudless summer day !
Water water water !
Always fun racing and one of the few tracks you can see the entire track from the stands.
Stands were absolutely packed. Gee thanks Tony.
Bring back Marlboro!
Absolutely... & put John Player Special on a car as well...
Endurance and attrition created drama and excitement. I miss this kind of racing.
I was rooting for Nigel watching this race - he could not catch a break that season. He had chances to win or get big points, as the Penskes, whilst the quickest, were not invincible.
Phoenix - made a mistake out of the pits
Indy - hit by Dennis Vitolo
Detroit - engine
Toronto - engine
Michigan - throttle
New Hampshire - suspension (after colliding with Mario)
Vancouver - badly timed pitstop
Nazareth - mis-placed pre-load ballast
Nigel didn't do himself any favours by refusing to test in the second half of the season, and getting short-tempered on occasion, but since he was going back to F1, he had little to lose.
talk about an unlucky championship hangover
Let's hope one day that IndyCar will bring back the Michigan 500.
Ford Cosworth ruled the roost on these high power circuits
This is the soundtrack missing from my living room on Sundays. Indycar and Formula 1 go back to these glory days. Oh and I was at this race. Wouldn't bother now. Cars and drivers are boring now.
Man look at that crowd
Balls to the Wall track. Miss them running on it.
We were there. From Cincinnati. 1st time at MIS.

12:28 That Guy Hit Gary Gerould Tho
Man, Boesel should have won this.
It hurts a lot.
Michigan 500 in IndyCar again
Probably the weirdest race of 1994!
André de Souza not Surfers Paradise?
Engine reliability was really an issue through the 80s and 90s. It was in F1 as well - interesting... the kers stuff looks much more complicated nowadays.
Yes because the engines were run to the absolute limit while today's engines are restricted in terms of boost, revs, certain materials etc. so they are far less stressed and of course production is much more exact today. The top level series really need to go back to allow constructors fathoming the limits of technology.
1994 Marlboro 500: The Adventures of Robby Gordon
Hey iRacing take notes! We want some historic Indycars!!!!
Great upload Thanks Indycar.
Let's hear it for Willy T. Ribbs
I want more ovals in 2020. We need Michigan, Fontana, Atlanta, New Hampshire, Puebla, Chicagoland, and Kentucky into the Calendar. I understand that Oval racing is dangerous because of several incidents in the past. But there are risks that every driver has to live with it. Indy Car was created for that purpose. If the sport get more road and street events, the existing ovals excluding the Indy 500 would cease to exist. Take the races that NASCAR doesn’t want to run anymore and replace them into this series. I expect a major transformation when the new decade begins.
Oval is too dangerous. Road racing is much better.
@@bétaalfa-g2i Short ovals are not dangerous at all. That's why Indycar should add many short ovals on the schedule because they usually offer good racing and are very safe.
I am all for Michigan and Kentucky. I actually would love to see an IndyCar race at IRP perhaps in August or September.
@@jasoncampbell7765 IRP would be awesome, especially if it could be run at night.
maybe if people bought tickets, they would. the danger is a minor issue considering there are plenty of mile ovals that can run IC. the problem is getting them to the track since IC doesn't give TV money to the tracks to run, while nascar does since they have a bigger TV contract
ESPN used to be Speed World. Now it's just NFL NBA sprinkled with some MLB and talk about LeBron James world.. It makes sense why they have lost interest.
ESPN used to be relevant. Now, they're just waiting to die.
Yep even their coverage for NFL games has sucked more than ever and are convinced that their coverage of the NBA talking about LeBron James 24/7 is gonna keep them alive.
Run Ronaldo Run #THEBESTINTHEWORLD Disney needs to make some major changes to ESPN.
ESPN's (including quality) decline started in the 2000s to be honest.
Today's ESPN/ABC is what Robin Miller described it: Always Bad Coverage.
They are just less interested in racing unless it’s F1 and sometimes NASCAR and occasionally IndyCar
30:06 Good piece of driving by Robby there.
14:33 did he blinked?
Michigan was the toughest 500 miles in IndyCar. Mansell, when he won there in 1993 pretty much had to be pulled from the car he was exhausted. IndyCars should go back to Michigan, I think in todays day & age more cars would be able to run the entire 500 mile distance...
Mansell at this point was out of shape, period. Two years prior at Monaco after dueling with Senna, he was so tired at the podium ceremony he could barely stand. His back injury from '86 didn't help matters much either.
Simply the best...
REAL Indy Car racing....
Bring back MIS, bring back the 500 mile triple crown, get rid of the double header at Belle Isle.
1.5x points at MIS and Pocono, 2x points at Indy. 1x times points everywhere else and NO DOUBLE POINTS FINALE.
street and road corares are money makers right now ovals are not!
Only Indy Car win for King Kenny Bernstein’s team

It's time for a return to the Irish Hills IndyCar people.
Great race .. thanks guy
Don't stop reposting these videos.
Did I see that right at 1h 17m Boesel passed the pace car the same as Scott Goodyear did at Indianapolis the next year and no penalty?
Crazy speeds🙂
15:45 RACE START
Now this is a race 👍🏻
We've traded great cars and dull racing for great racing and dull cars.
It's a good trade but its still fun to see these old cars in action even if there's far less on-track action and they breakdown all the time.
like watching Rossi with that Micheal pass three wide on opening lap
the best years, them came IRL and Champ Car, they killed IndyCar, hope one day copy that successful formula
Okay this race, but the 2000 edition, am I right?
They uploaded it
I know it's a viscous circle, no fans equal no money, no money equals no fans. Indycar needs to entice manufacturers and sponsors back by spending some money. Look at those full stands. Cars were covered in sponsors, multiple engine manufacturers , and multiple chassis. Free up the rules to entice manufacturers back. Give them a reason. Yes, no manufacturer is going to have a twin turbo eight or six cylinder in their SUV. However racing alows engineers to exercise their brains, trouble shoot, design, and test. It's still a worthy invest.
TheUsmc1488 but because of Tony George and the split they still don’t want nothing to do with Indycar. I mean Toyota and Ford should be back in Indycar. The series is starting to grow a bit and if they would ever come back it could make the series even bigger. They are wasting so much money in NASCAR when not a whole lot of people care about it anymore. Thank You Tony George for still having the sport of Indycar crippled.
Lots of tobacco money you'll never get back.
sdsmt99 well they still have all kind of beer sponsors still in NASCAR. Maybe they need to get them back into Indycar. Budweiser, Miller, and Coors used to sponsor in Indycar for a long time and by the middle of the split they all went to NASCAR.
Music artist @2:22?
Back when tobacco money flowed
when i watch these races i actually feel the drivers driving the cars, nowadays its a joke
This track is so bumpy that i think it was hurting the cars in different ways. Front suspensions, steering.
Assisti Essa Corrida na Semana Passada
listen to those engines when they fly by the sidetrack cam, there is nothing like it. The new cars have completely lost the thrilling sound, I miss it a lot.
The one guy said the fire people lol.
wow!240 nige !
What happened that ovals became unsafe?
Standards and perspective changed
Dan Wheldon’s death is what really killed it.
the irony is that there were more ovals and the sport dangerous, and the sport is safer than before but yet, less ovals.
Drivers being all balls and no brains is what makes it dangerous for not only ovals, but circuits too.
@@nolancain8792 not only that, but more fans attend more circuits and garbage advertising for ovals outside the 500 and Iowa which causes less people to show up
@@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT I really think we can do the late 90’s speeds again in these current cars at Michigan. They’re incredibly safe as well so the risk should be acceptable.
56:04 - lead car passes the pace car while it's on the apron. No penalty. Has Scott Goodyear seen this?
1:11:16 - Boesel passes the pace car on the restart too.
57:16 OOUCH!
Can anyone ID the music 2:30 in?
Just search CART 1994 Starting Grid here on UA-cam, you will find it.
