I had the privilege of seeing Ian McKellen live on stage in a one man show way back in 1981 - he was fundraising to support the gay community here in the UK because of Aids/HIV. An absolutely mesmerising performance on stage that I have never seen bettered ever. At the end of his show and people were leaving, he was there in the foyer of the theatre with a bucket so he could take donations. My wife, as normal, had decided that she needed as wee and had disappeared into the toilets. Of course, I went across and put some cash into the bucket Ian was holding. He must have found me attractive, as he immediately tried to engage me in conversation. I did feel flattered, but thankfully my wife appeared on cue and we left.
As for old black and white movies and the actors that made it, in American Cinema. *Charlie Chaplain* wasn't as well known to me, as much as the *Laurel and Hardy* were. It was a shock to me, finding out all those years ago, that *Stan Laurel* was actually an Englishman. And that, he was the main writing and creative influence of the two of them.
Liam Neeson is the guy you're thinking of. Brits do play the villain very well, my theory is, Hollywood actors all want to play the hero, they're afraid playing the villain will harm their career, whereas most British actors don't care, all they care about is whether it's a good role. Also Hollywood doesn't seem to like casting Americans as the baddie, but would prefer an actor from an English speaking country, and a lot of British actors can emit an air of menace without even raising their voice. Talking of villains, a glaring omission from this list is Gary Oldman, I'd also have had Sir Alec Guinness on the list. If an actor/actress has Sir or Dame in front of their name they're usually pretty special.
Aaaaaagh! A glimpse of Dick van Dyke brought back all my childhood nightmares of suffering through that horrendous "attempt"! at a cockney accent!!!!!!
You mentioned that some of the actors age well, that may be because British actors don't spend time at the cosmetic surgery. Let's face it, some American actors end up looking like they were made from left-over spare parts. You have to wonder what they're thinking when they see someone like Cher, Dolly Parton, Madonna & many others. "Ooh, she looks like she's been in a chemical accident, I want to look just like her".
