    They're missing something big here, a lot of these Mexican neighborhoods have been here since the '20's, '30s, and '40s and they've been policed and criminalized for almost as long. It's true that there has been an increase in immigration that has seen these neighborhoods grow but they have been established for decades. I also thought that Mexicans living in Orange County were a new trend but we have deep seated history in this County that has been erased and glossed over through gentrification. If you want to see how far back it goes you can start your research with the Mendez v. Westminster case and work your way from there. They keep saying it's a new population when it's not, it's just been ignored and swept under the rug.

    A lot of people seem to be missing the point... Its not about who's gang is the toughest or if Anaheim is hard or whatever. its about how laws are being engineered and used to control a community.Its about how America, the country that prides itself on "freedom" is being oppressed.

    I’m Mexican but chose not to be an ignorant one. I lived and grew up in a low income neighborhood but I got educated, dressed and spoke like a decent human being not like a low life. I was never “harassed” or looked down by the police. Don’t see any investigative journalist asking those ignorant thugs why they refuse to do the same and get educated???

    I'm from Anaheim and I remember when all this happened. I was a young teenager when it happened so I still had so much to learn. But seeing it now, I can really appreciate the journalism. It's really on point. There are many areas around southern California and not just Anaheim that lead to the creation of gangs. How do Americans expect them not to form when they relegate immigrants to the margins which leads to a concentration of poverty? I myself flirted with that lifestyle when I was young but thankfully never ended up in it because of the people I had in my life. It also doesn't help that American society has been prejudiced against us. Times have gotten a little better but a lot of us here, in the lower class, struggle with our self-esteem.

    It's a fact. Most gangs are Latino in Anaheim. If anything they need more cops. I don't like cops personally but they are needed in these areas. Also these people know nothing about how bad it really is .

  • @breaks0
    @breaks0 12 років тому +4

    I live in NY and despite all the shit here, all the people killed here, I'll tell you what, if Anaeheim is really this bad, where people can't even protest in their own neighborhoods, can't even go outside in groups of 3 or more, especially men. Where the majority is a apartheidized Latino underclass, then it's worse than here. Wtf else should I've expected of the capital of Orange fucking County?! Anaheim's clearly more of a police state even than Bloombergville, It's fucked up.

    I want to say that I was deeply moved by the unflinching honesty demonstrated by the police chief about his shortcomings and the mistakes that were made during the protests. I also completely support the gang unit sargeant who being a latino himself as I am, defends the practice of a common sense profiling. I was born and have lived in the Anaheim area my entire life in medium to low income neighborhoods and I have never been "harassed" by the police. I do not however dress like a gangster.

  • @grdpder

    In this video, no one ask the lady advocate, what is her plan to combat crime and fix the gang invested neighborhood. So, just tell the police don't patrol the area and see what happens. In this specific neighborhood, who are the ones committing the most crimes? It is a rhetorical question. I would also ask those young men being featured in this piece, what do they suggest the City leaders do and how should the police respond to crime in their community.

    I feel for our people in Anaheim, lets make a change, lets just do it. With integrity and honesty. I have a goal to represent this city RIGHTeously. As a minority coming from this community it was sad to see another minority officer have to identify with this kind of mindset. I believe reform comes with good community policing and building an honest rapport with the communities you serve, and the trust will come right back. Harsh on crime policies need to be yielded because progress shows it's not working effectively.

Now I am asking for help here; WHY don't I feel this same empathy for the black youth who are experiencing similar injustices in cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and Baltimore....? Thank you for telling the story many do not know! Anaheim is the worst in terms of how funding in the city gets distributed. You can easily see which parts of the city gets taken care of and which parts gets over looked. Anaheim city officials only care about Anaheim hills and the surrounding area of Disneyland. If you don’t believe me just drive around the small neighborhoods five miles East of Disney.

    The most disturbing thing I learned here is that "gang injunctions" make it illegal in some of the neighborhoods to stand with others in a public place for more than 5 minutes. On top of that, all 40 of the officers involved in local shootings have been cleared of charges. They say the future of America is in California - are we headed for these kind of police state conditions in every US neighborhood?

    He probably had a cell phone camera and they thought it was a gun. That's why they can not find the gun... So the camera is the new gun.

    Had no idea, just moved to Laguna Beach after 10yrs in Houston. I almost moved to Anaheim Hills but changed my mind and chose Laguna. Thank God. This is the safest city I've ever lived in. OC is so expensive except for Anaheim and Santa ana, the whole county has long been gentrified. Although I lived in one of the nicest parts of Houston, Alief was 10 mins from my house and notorious gang territory. Problem with living in an affordable city. Those guys would regularly steal cars and rob peolple in the wealthy neighborhood. If any of these guys even tried to come to Laguna Beach, they would get profiled and harassed by the police and wouldn't even be allowed in the city.

      The county was NOT "gentrified. " In the early 60s it started to be invaded and many of these people have no legal right to even be in the country. Their parents came here illegally and they "grandfathered" in bringing their gang mentality with them. You reap what you sow.

    This is a weird extremely biased fault lines episode that interviewed the wrong Hispanics/Mexicans in Anaheim. Those individuals that were interviewed are clearly gang influenced if not part of a gang already. I grew up in this area of West Anaheim/Stanton in an immigrant household and let me tell you that most families fear the gangs more than they do the police. Being a low income Mexican/Hispanic in this area puts you at a higher risk of joining one of the dozens of gangs that exist in the city. My friends and I grew up hanging out in many public areas and we were NEVER approached by Anaheim police or threatened by them. In this city that's infested by drugs, criminals, gangs, there are also many hard working individuals trying to get out of poverty. On the flip side, there are many people in the same communities that do not even bother to strive for more. They fall into the same lifestyles as their friends and family members and get pulled into all these gang activities. I'm disappointed in Al Jazeera for doing this one sided report as it makes the gang situation worst here. Something we continue to struggle with today even in 2024! If anything the gang issue has gotten much much worst!
