- Episode 254: Summerslam 1993
On the eve of Summerslam 2023, I'm gonna be reviewing the last Summerslam that came to the great state of Michigan; the 30th anniversary of this show. The infamous Lex Express, the disappointing outcome to the WWF Championship Match between Lex Luger & Yokozuna, the disappointing Intercontinental Championship Match between Shawn Michaels & Mr. Perfect, the Rest In Peace Match with Undertaker & Giant Gonzalez, Bret Hart & Jerry Lawler wrestling over royalty, & much more. Some call it the worst Summerslam of all time, and you can make the case it is; but for sure it's among the worst. This week is all about Summerslam 1993.

Just like in WCW, whenever Lex Luger's on a hot streak, they cut it outta nowhere
Did the WWF drop the ball? Holy Forking Shirt Balls, Yes! (Fans of the tv show, The Good Place would get the reference.)
Luger would finally get his big moment four years later just prior to WCW road wild, but we'll never know how it would've worked out with Luger as WWF Champion.
i like your narration style and all the match details and facts you bring up, subbed
Thanks & welcome
Can't believe that summerslam 1993 happened 30-years ago time flies awesome Review.
And to think...
The "SummerSlam '93" we had was the "SummerSlam '93" we got due to the fact that "He Who Must Not Be Named" refused to pass the torch to Bret. And all because "That didn't work for him, brother."
Ha ha
Great video
Bruce says the plan all along was Hogan dropping the belt to Yoko because the WWF realized they had something with Yoko as champion
If Bruce said it, then more than likely it's not the complete truth
"Hey, Lex, we are going all in on you as the next top guy and you're gonna be winning the big one...um, on second note, you're not winning the big one, hey, at least you got a main event push"
-a potential meeting between Lex Luger and Mr McMahon
Oh I been waiting for this
Everytime I relive where an ending like the Luger-Yokozuna match I always think this: WHY DID YOU CELEBRATE LIKE YOU WON THE TITLE! And you’ve said the same too when I asked the same question when you did a review on a PPV that had a similar ending to a title match. Like why were they celebrating like the title changed hands.
In kayfabe, if you don't win the title in a title match, that's a loss
Four years later at that same venue, Luger would win the WCW title from Hollywood Hulk Hogan on the 100th episode of Monday Nitro…only to lose it to Hogan at Road Wild.
WWF SummerSlam 1993 is a horrible show. It's in the top 5 worst SummerSlams ever. Steiner Brothers vs The Heavenly Bodies is a very good match. Shawn Michaels vs Mr. Perfect is a decent match. This match has to be the most disappointing match in SummerSlam history. Bret Hart vs Jerry Lawler is an alright match. The Undertaker vs Giant Gonzalez is a horrible match. It's one of the worst matches in SummerSlam's history. Tanaka and The Smoking Gunns vs Bam Bam Bigelow and The Headshrinkers is a good match. Lex Luger vs Yokozuna is an ok match. Lex should have won the title because after SummerSlam, his main event run in the WWF was over.
totally agree they shouldve just put the belt on luger - they celebrated as if he'd just won the title so they may as well have just gone with it
Mr perfect vs Shawn michaels was such a disappointing match I remember as a kid being exited for that match and even buying into the hype the wwf put into it only for it to be a huge letdown. Don't know if it was because of lack of chemistry perfect being injured or both guys being off on their game but it just didn't deliver. The countout finish also didn't help things much either
Favorite match razor vs Dibiase least favorite undertaker vs giant Gonzales
Vince felt that Lex would have been a better chaser for the title instead of the champion I feel. Also, Mr Perfect not winning the IC title here was a mistake too, because Shawn was stripped and suspended a week later after this show.
Should Luger have won the WWF title in hindsight at Summerslam? YES!
Just a couple questions. First 1 is later down the road post Summerslam. The other being related to the Bret feud w/ Lawler.
1) If Luger would have won the WWF title at Summerslam who would you have him drop it to and when? Also even if he did win the WWF title at Summerslam could you still feasably do the 2-part main event they booked at WM10 (Yoko/Luger, Yoko/Bret) with the same structuring they would do at that show?
2) Would you have preferred just to have the Bret/Lawler match instead of what they did at '93 Summerslam? Mind you I liked how they booked the finish and the heat Lawler got on Bret for further down the line hence the finish but I would've just preferred just the one-on-one.
Yeah I dunno where I'd place this PPV in summerslam history. I'm probably bottom 5 due to quality, some poor booking decisions, and some backstage bullshit (albeit that's only a piece of the problem).
1. Don't know & I think they were trying to set up a Luger/Borga match for a big show; that could have easily been the WM X Main Event in an alternative timeline. The 2-part Main Event wasn't even in consideration until the Rumble.
2. They could have done 1 match, done the same result, & it would have worked just the same
This SummerSlam was ok for what it was, the Steiner Brothers vs Heavenly Bodies was a good match, but the Lex Luger vs Yokozuna match wasn't that good due to the finish. As you said James, they should have put the belt on Luger. I don't know why they didn't bite the bullet and put the belt on him given how over he was.
They wanted to save the moment for Wrestlemania X due to it being in MSG; the same place Hulkamania in the WWF started
QOTW: Hell Yeah, They did
Two questions pertaining to the same thing. Why do you think the WWF chose the palace and not the Joe for this show (given how WWE used the Joe Louis arena prior to its closure) and why WWE didn't run other shows at the Palace?
1. The Palace was a newer building(opened in 1988) & held more in attendance than The Joe
2. Rent cost probably
Do you think Vince McMahon not putting the WWF title on Lex Luger is one of the reasons Vinnie Mac isn’t a good booker at all? Because to me it felt like Vince didn’t have a reason or a good reason to not put the title on Lex. It’s not because Luger was being deflect,It’s not because he broke a rule,It’s not because Lex is injured. Hell it’s not even because Lex and Vince had a heated argument. It’s because Vince change his mind and just gave up.
Vince had 1 chance to do it & he blew it
In 1993, ZERO to lose by putting the belt on Lex
@@WeAreProWrestling To me Lex was a former WCW champion also. You would think since he’s in WWF you would think Vince be like “Okay I got one of the top stars in WCW now and going to take advantage of it by putting the world title of my wrestling company on him.” But nope Vinnie Mac he had to be a buzzkill again.
Don’t know if it’s just me, but while Shawn Michaels is considered Mr. WrestleMania, were most of his SummerSlam matches underwhelming?
@@ThunderForce2000 89, 95, 96, 02 were all good; the rest were what they were. 1990 he didn't even wrestle in the match, 1992 was more angle than match, 1993 disappointing, 2003 not even a factor, 2005 overselling, 2006 & 2009 DX stuff
Did they dropped the ball on putting the wwf championship on lex luger fuck yes
If Luger did win the title at SummerSlam, who would have been his rivals until WrestleMania X because you would think that Bret would still win at Mania X
There wasn't any plan on giving the belt back to Bret until he won the popularity vote at Rumble 94
As far as Luger rivals; it would have probably been all the foreign heels in the WWF leading to a "big match" against Ludvig Borga
They should've just had Tatanka and Bam Bam go one on one!
Questions
1. Why would they give a lost to 123 kid after they pushed him after beating ted Dibiase
2. Who was a bigger jackass during 1993 hulk hogan or shawn michaels
3. Do you think bret wanted the crown to me i don't think he wanted it and i agree
4. In your mind what did you think the rest in peace match was
5. Why was sherri martel let go by the wwf anyway
6. If lex luger was wwf champion how would they have push him as wwf champion
1. He's a portrayed underdog; so he can't win all the time
2. Hogan; Shawn wouldn't reach the Shawn we knew for a couple more years
3. The crown was an apology for Wrestlemania IX
4. I had no clue
5. 2 reasons have been given; enrolling in cosmetology school or failed drug tests
6. Don't know
@@WeAreProWrestlingwait a minute enrolling in cosmetology school 1 reason to fire her that's stupid james
@@arthurjones3670 Not fired, just left for that. She either left for that or was fired for failed drug tests.
Watching this was a mixed bag. The first half was great but after the stuff with Bret Hart, the show went a little downhill.
Yeah WWE dropped the ball with Lex Luger smh he should have an reign with the belt I ain’t gonna say it wasn’t gonna be great but still Luger should have won.
Hey friend, I'm a new subscriber here, stay connected 😁
Welcome to the channel
A few things.....
1995 is the worst SummerSlam. Full stop. Without the ladder match, it's probably top 5 worst PPVs ever. I agree with putting the belt on Lex then and now..... HOWEVER, who would he feud with going to Survivor Series, Rumble, Mania X (where he'd probably drop it) AND do you think even if he was WWF Champion at the time would he even be a draw given the state of business?
All roads probably would have lead to Luger/Borga down the road
And I don't know how big of a draw he could have been; but in 1993, they had nothing to lose in trying something
Now james i wanna say you have fun tomorrow night at summerslam you live that moment watch those great matches i wish i could go back last year and relieve my time when I was at Wrestlemania night one. James have tomorrow night.
I like to see Lex Luger beat yokzuna for the wwf world wresting champion at summer slam but why Lex not win the wwf world wresting champion
Because he didn't win by pinfall or submission; therefore he didn't win the belt
I want hulk vs Bert
I know win wwf world wresting champion by pinfall or submission
B minus ➖ for this summer slam for me
I liked 1993 summerslam
