Asclepius: The Mortal Man so Powerful Zeus Killed Him out of Fear

  • Hey everyone, welcome to Mythology Explained. The topic of this video is Asclepius, the greatest healer in all of Greek mythology. He became so adept at healing that his powers became transcendent: able to bring the dead back to life, restoring soul to inanimate body, no longer limited by the fragility and perishability of flesh.
He was the son of Apollo, the god of healing among other things. He was trained in the healing arts by the immortal centaur Chiron, and though he brought much good into the world with his restorative power, he would eventually be killed by Zeus, who believed that the powers Asclepius had cultivated were too potent to be wielded by mortal hands. It was Zeus’ belief that, unless Asclepius’ life was put to an end, the crystalline divide that separated the realm of mortality from the realm of divinity would be compromised, upsetting the natural order. Ultimately, Zeus’ execution of Asclepius precipitated a cascading sequence of events that resulted in the death of the cyclopes who forged Zeus’ thunderbolts, which then resulted in Apollo becoming the slave of a mortal man for one year as punishment.
Though Asclepius was ripped from the world too soon, robbed of life as he had worked to save it - the vain and wrathful whim of a god worried his own light would be dimmed - his legacy stands the test of time, made enduring through posthumous ascension and prominent symbolism: at Apollo’s behest, he was set in the sky as a constellation; despite not achieving godhood in life, he was later deified as a god of healing and medicine; and even today, the Rod of Asclepius (a serpent-entwined staff) serves as a symbol emblematic of medicine, one incorporated into the logo of the World Health Organization, and many other institutions. Incidentally, this is not to be confused with the Staff of Hermes, also known as the Caduceus, which is a staff entwined by twin serpents, its length punctuated at the top by a pair of wings.
Watch the video for the rest!

Apollo’s my favorite Greek god and I don’t like Zeus. I really hate that Apollo could do nothing against Zeus after Zeus killed Asclepius and when he punished him for killing the Cyclops.

Let's for sake - add imagination and a touch of reality.
    Asclep invented defibrillators.
Maybe not twin defibrillators like we have today but a staff with two heads. That generated small electric currents, enough to restart a heart. (Perfectly plausible for a health care practitioner) it's almost the beginners stage - inventing. Let's add that asclep recharged the staff and accidentally electrocuted himself. The ancient greeks were so incredibly rich with ideas 💡. This almost seems like the past has nothing left of blue prints etc just stories hiding the todays equipment. Tbh defibrillators are so popular on earth that it does seem silly to presume that we "20th, 21st" century humans are the first.
I really enjoyed this story. It's a shame, that's there's no way to distinguish between religion and science. I don't want to say self electrocution rules out zeus because divine intervention wasn't mentioned. But to hide only 1 thing is missing. If there's any other accurate point made that I never covered. To whomever reads this, please comment and tell me.

Well I thought to believe it was about it was going over the authority of Zeus ruler & rules of someone fate & destiny in life & death , that all mortal beings most processes in life
Meaning when the days that a human times is up , and their wont & cannot die because someone else is getting in the way, who can surpass the time of death because their can heal and bring other's back from dead 🙄🤔.
That is really going and upsetting the balance of (ORDER) between life and death.
That's why I believe since it's in the original story why Zeus did that.
Some people called it out of jealousy, some stated he done it out of fear 😒🤦‍♂️. But in all honesty & truth he done that out of Nature's between life & death.
      The natural stage of orders
Spiritual and natural is the key meaning word of why Zeus did what he needed and have to do.
      Not outta fear

This sounds similar to the Christian verse the bible. the ultimate healer aka jesus. Yahweh is seen as bad which is inverse to the "good god" of the christian cannon so this story lines up with the real christian cannon.
