- Hey everyone, welcome to Mythology Explained. In today’s video, we’re going to discuss Set, the Egyptian god of foreign lands, the desert, disasters, strength, storms, protective power, cunning, violence, war, confusion, and chaos, chaos being something he both embodied and combated. He was invoked by pharaohs and warriors so as to emulate him in battle and channel his strength; he murdered Osiris, the king of the gods, and usurped the throne, later vying with his Nephew Horus, the rightful king, in a decades long struggle for supremacy; and he was the Sun God’s greatest protector, journeying with Ra each night through the underworld, fighting and felling, on a nightly-basis, the terrible serpent Apophis, the personification of chaos, thus ensuring the sun prevailed over the perils of the chthonic depths and survived to rise again each morning and bathe the world in life giving light.
Alright, let’s get into it.
In ancient Egyptian iconography, Set (also spelled Seth) is depicted in a unique and unmistakable manner. Unlike many Egyptian deities whose appearances are recognizable from the natural world, Set's appearance (either zoomorphic, full-animal, or partly zoomorphic and partly anthropomorphic, human-animal hybrid) is based on an animal, usually referred to as the 'Set animal', that doesn't correspond to any known creature that actually exists. It is a composite creature with a curved snout, squared-off ears, and a forked tail. Some suggest it might be an amalgamation, possibly including elements of aardvarks, donkeys, jackals, or fennec foxes. Others have proposed more fantastical creatures like the griffin. Furthermore, while other features can be conceivably connected to other animals, the forked, tapering tail doesn't clearly match any known animal, adding even more to the mystery of Set's Iconography. He is often shown as this creature or as a man with the head of this creature. In terms of color, Set is often painted red, a color that has dual connotations in ancient Egyptian culture. It could be associated with chaos, storms, and the desert-elements that Set is the god of-but also with vitality and protection. His coloring, what it signifies, marks him as a deity of ambiguity, embodying both the power of disorder and the necessary force to quell that disorder.

Two pillars of creation.... Up/Down, In/Out , Male/Female, Chaos/Order. It almost seems like a mirrored contradiction of itself covering polar(Universal) opposites, in order to maintain order. Set sounds like an alignment of Chaotic Neutral.. Not Good or Bad... Just true order of balance.

As various schools of Hindu thought developed in a more monotheistic direction, Indra the Dragon Slayer was not only completely demoted, but his murder of Vrita even began to be seen as a serious transgression for which he was punished by Vishnu.
The Hindu sects basically absorbed all the things that the earlier, more polytheistic and limited gods and their worshippers feared or at least been extremely awed by as part and parcel of their absolute, ultimate deities, like the dragon and snake aspects, primordial chaos or the void, darkness and night (Nyx the embodiment of night in greek mythology being the only deity Zeus was afraid of) and everything to do with death, cosmic destruction and time.
Of course, the same thing happened with Yahwe who also like Shiva and Vishnu was elevated from Dragon Slayer to Lord and creator of dragons and snakes (from Leviathan who goes from monstrous adversary to favorite pet and the decidedly dragonesque Seraphim, who are repeatedly associated with serpents).
Of course in Christianity things that had been melded together in later Judaism we're then divorced once more, as imagry of Jehova and his (unfallen) angels was thoroughly purged of everything serpentine once more, with Satan being declared the sole lord of all dragons and snakes (the poor dears).

@@lukasbauer8783 I am not an authority on the subject, but based on what I've read and heard, "killing a dragon" indeed might not be a proper thing to do. However, one does seem to need to DEFEAT the "dragon" and impose his own rule (based on knowledge of the so called "Laws") over his thoughts, words, (re)actions... Then, one needs to balance things out in order to not slip into the other extreme. I am not certain about it, but it seems reasonable. One needs to posess the knowledge required and the control over the things that drive him, in order to bring order and balance and to avoid excess of one and the deprivation of the other in his charcter, Psyche and in time in his body as well...

Sutekh is the falcon deity everyone confuses for Horus. Horus is Eros, Eros is Tammuz who is Dumuzi.

You forgot to mention that Isis had tricked Set into “spilling his seed” into what he had thought was a female goddess, but was actually a male god. She brought the other gods and goddesses to witness this, which was very damning. Set was sent to the underworld after that.
Another story is that Isis had transformed into a peasant mother, and tricked Set into confessing what he had done to Osiris.
Set tricked Osiris into laying inside a sarcophagus, which he then locked shut until Osiris died, then tore his body apart. Isis found the body parts of Osiris except for his penis, which she had crafted a new one out of pure gold, then she “mated” with it and became pregnant with Horus.

Egyptian, cosmology and Pantheon are some of the most convoluted in the world. I love the comments here who believe that there are exact correlations from exact time periods or there are alternate explanations that are more convincing. I don't think the Egyptians themselves cared that much because as explanations go, they adapted what they had to change in culture, norms and styles and that may have been their cleverest trick

Set and Horus are night and day. Horus is the daylight Hours as the Sun moves across the Horuzon and Set takes over at sunSet. This is what I have been told.
It's interesting how the Egyptian story has Set the Egyptian god of Strength bashing a great snake, the Norse story has the Norse god of Strength Thor fighting a giant snake, and the book of giants has a giant fighting with Leviathan, a giant serpent. I'm pretty sure there are others, but it's interesting to me how along with a flood myth a fight with a giant serpent is also almost as common between cultures, not even mentioning the serpent imagery in Genesis

Why does Set sound more and more like Marduk.. The more I listen. Lord of the Red lands is Mars... Not just a desert, but a distinct lands of red desert. 🤔 Marduk also killed his own brother by way of water and a river. You are correct! Just a few correction's however. So SETH or SET is the supposid child of Abraham. but SUT, The Kemetic God is in fact, not only the God of the Bible, but the Gods of the Cannanites, the shadow god of the universe and so much more. People fail to understand that Sut was not associated with foreigner's because they thought he was the Devil. He was associated with Foreigners because HE WAS A FOREIGN GOD. Sut was a black god with a white and arab empire. Similar to Scar, who was a Lion with a hyena empire, the direct enemy of the Lions. Or Lucifer, a fallen angel with a demonic empire. It’s kinda crazy to look at what a stinker that movie was, yet it had an absolutely stacked cast. And for the most part very cool imagery and half the CGI was cool looking.

Set killed Osiris not Seth who has just let out of the Pyramids of Mar's as a prisoner for the crime of killing Osiris.
in the pyramid texts, Osiris tortured him first-- and transgressed against his wife-- because Ra's power went to Osiris' head. It's the tale of Herichef. Ra allows Set to kill Osiris twice once for himself-- once for Nephthys.

You neglected to mention the one motive for killing Osiris, which also explains the birth of Sobek. As well as misidentified the domains of influence of several gods, either partially or completely in some cases.

It's funny because in the Somali language, Set's scepter of power, dominion and control, known as the "Was," means, "to get fucced," as in something has dominanted you or over powered you, hence, to get fucced. I know this has it orgins from Ancient Egyptian language because Somali's use alot of ancient Egyptian words. For example we call the sun "qor-rah" which literally means the neck of Rah. The ancient Egyptians used to call Somalia, Ta-Neter which means the Land of the Gods. Ancient Egyptians viewed ancient Somalia as their ancestral and spiritual homeland.
