Hi! I just found you!!!! Wish I did a long time ago. Love to make mittens. Then my oldest sister was talking about socks. At 66 years old I still try to outdo her and that’s what lead me to finding you. Love that I get to teach my oldest sister 😂 Love that cast on!
I get so excited when you post a new video. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart it was because of your no fear sock series I learned to knit socks
Wow!!! I’m a prolific sock knitter and never noticed that before. That is amazing and I will use it from now on. I look forward to your new sock pattern!!
Nice. I usually bind off using the stretchy bind off and regular because if I use the stretchy it’s too stretchy. Never thought about doing it for cast on. Thank you
Just bought your pattern. My son is a huge LOTR fan. I'm so excited to make these for him. I love learning new techniques. Thank you for sharing your talents with all of us.
Thank you so much for buying my pattern Denice! It means more than you can imagine. I hope your son enjoys the socks and you enjoy knitting them!!! Thanks for your message.
I've done this cast on a couple of times for a hat and mitts just to try something new. I love how it looks and loved your easy to follow tutorial. Thank you x
Learning so much, thank you. Looking forward to your new pattern. Blessings to you and your family and everyone. Ps I missed seeing you, praying all is well
I've used slipknot cast-ons for the last few pairs of top down socks because of the elasticity but will definitely give the combination cast-on a try work my next pair of top down socks. I've used both long tail and old Norwegian for years but never thought to combine them.
New technique and news of another Earth Tones Girl sock pattern ... you've made my day! Will definitely try this out on next pair of socks. Thanks from Canada!
Thank you so much Denise - your videoes are wonderful👍🏻 I’m looking forward to trying this method and of course to buying your pattern. All the best from little Denmark🇩🇰Hugs from Karin in Flittiglise
Fabulous! I found out about you via the interview with Corinne at the Woolly Thistle. I haven't been knitting socks since a few years ago, but am inspired to do them again. Your You-tube channel is so helpful! Thank you for all the care and attention to detail.
Dear Denise, thank you so much 💕 for this absolutely stunning tutorial. I'll try this definitely with my next pair of socks 🧦 maybe your new pattern ☺️
Great video! I just realized that I’ve been doing the German twisted cast on incorrectly but it doesn’t seem to have mattered. Instead of going over the back loop I’ve gone under it and brought it down. When you do the first row do you knit the GTC through the back loop? Thank you!
Thanks for this refreshing series of videos. I’m looking forward to seeing the new sock pattern. This is an interesting approach to casting on. It is also possible to use the ‘in pattern’ version that both the Long tail cast on and the German twisted cast on have. Each of them gives a combination of knit and pearl cast on stitches. My personal favourite is the Long tail cast on in pattern. It involves less ‘gymnastics’ :)
I started using the German twisted cast on a while ago and I love it. Now I will try your combination. Thank you for being you, your giggles bring me such joy😊
Great idea! I’ve found with doing your no fuss/vanilla top down socks the sock is great but the cast on a little tight.. will try the combo on my next pair! Needles at the ready! 😆 Little FYI on the “German” cast on for you.. my friend and fellow knit educator is German and he has no idea where it comes from! He’s and his other educators are well aware of the cast on method and use/teach it but he states often it’s definitely not a “German history of knitting”… he doesn’t know why it’s called German either .. maybe it is just an older Norwegian style.. 🤷🏼♂️ 😆 Love ya work n onto your next tutorial on socks! 😍
Thanks so much for sharing that information on the German cast on. I tried looking it up online and found nothing but i do have a book on the history of hand knitting. Something may be in there. I'll do some research!!!
Lovely to come across this, it is inspiring! I tend to cast on German Twisted stitches in pattern (for 2x2 rib I will cast on 2 German Twisted stitches in knit followed by 2 German Twisted stitches in purl) and I do get good stretch and tidiness but I really love how well the plain long-tail compliments the knit stitches in following rounds and how the German Twisted in knits compliments the purl stitches in following rounds. I thought the top of the gray Fair Isle style sock in twisted rib was especially crisp, do you discuss this in another video how you work this 1x1 twisted rib?
So glad you enjoyed it Andrea!! And no I don't or rather haven't discussed this method for a 1x1 twisted rib. I think it would be rather simple to adapt.
@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast To work twisted 1x1 ribbing in the round, do you just knit the knits through the back loop and purl the purls the usual way? I am a Western knitter. It is such a pretty and compact ribbing, my usual 1x1 untwisted rib can risk looking like a hot mess though it is improved by making a wee extra tug on the working yarn going from a knit to a purl (same with seed stitch)
When One More Step is offered, will the directions for making the Shadow Wrap Heel on a Two at a Time sock be included or will that be a separate lesson, please?
Thank you for another informative vlog. Question - to start knitting after this cast on would the knit or purl be above the long tail of German cast on? Or would it not matter so long as you were consistant? Thank you
Hi Pamela, Any cast on can replace another cast on as long as it is not pivotal or key to the design within the sock. An Italian cast on aka A tubular cast on looks extremely different than this one. But can you substitute it, yes you can.

So cool! Can you use this in a cast off?
Glad you like it. I don't think so since this technique creates stitches instead of eliminates stitches.

Hi Karen,
No it will not! As promised before I will have a tutorial up as soon as I can.

I would start with a knit for the long tail and purl for the German cast on.
Can this be used in place of the Italian cast on?
