It would be great to see some UA-cam producer who has the complete knowledge and experience with Keyline Planning make a video. That video should start with a drone and some software to create an accurate contour map of the property being planned. Once that contour map is on the computer (or printed out), it would be good to see marked, the N,E, S, W references, the primary wind direction, and the location of the Main Ridge, Primary Ridges, Primary Valleys, and other water elements that enter the property, like piped-in municipality water, streams, etc. With that annotated contour map, the UA-cam producer could show how the main keyline chosen is one of the contour lines from the map. And from that keyline chosen, where to specify the keypoint and where the chosen highest in the property dam will be built. From that more annotated map, the Primary Valley parallel keylines are drawn - first the ones that go up from the primary contour dam that butts up against the primary ridges of that valley, and then the parallel keylines are drawn in that angle down toward the next contour line (possibly an on-contour swale leading or a lower contour dam). In this same ideal video, how to layout the keyline elements on the Primary Ridge would be done, a lot of which is the inverse of what is done for the Primary Valley. The book WATER FOR EVERY FARM - YEOMAN'S KEYLINE PLAN (the newest version possible) by P.A. Yeomans and compiled, updated, and edited by Ken B. Yeomans - is a must. I'm looking for a copy of "The City Forest: The Keyline Plan for the Human Environment Revolution"
by P.A. Yeomans so I can layout/plan my Yangana Ecuador eco-village/campground's most optimum plan using his Scale of Permanence as applied to a planned community. Should be fun. But, seeing a video about how to go from drone footage - to a contour map - to a Keyline property plan - would make it a lot easier to do. Who knows, maybe I'll produce and post that myself. In the meantime, Matt. Keep up the good work. - Jim from Phoenix

I teach it in more detail with pencil, paper, and topographic maps in The Advanced Permaculture Student Online, and I've given away previews of that in the past. The best person to learn from if you are interested is Darren Doherty in REX - he's the leading world expert on this topic and who I learned from. You won't find it for free online either - it is a professional skill (he restored huge spans of Vietnam's watersheds working for the World Bank earlier on in his career), so you won't find it online for free. UA-cam is great but lacks that professional grade information found inside courses like Darren's and my own. This video is also quite old and was created before The Advanced Permaculture Student Online or my in-depth studying in REX with Darren et al. I hope you pursue this study since it's key to all restoration at any scale and commercial success. The world needs keyline understanding to fix itself. California's only hope and salvation lies therein.

@@ThePermacultureStudent Thanks for the response and direction. I intend to understand Keyline Pattern & Keyline Flow Design - all toward the purpose of creating my mini-City Forest (aka eco-village/campground). Thanks for being part of the solution.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this! I have a few acres that's gone to fallow. I want to start a small food forest on the field. But it's perfect for swales, but just tricky to understand where the keylines are at, following contour how to keep the water from going over down hill. Luckily, my father in law understands how key lines work and used to build terraces and tile! So, hopefully he can land me a hand ;)

Matt, I tried the link you provided to Sue Leigh below to your book but the link appears to be dead. Is there a new link?
