Huge Sound Gretsch Catalina Jazz Drums On My Caravan Drum Solo

- At one of my Ken Loomer Jazz Quartet concerts that I performed in, I used my small Gretsch Catalina Jazz drum set which sounded so huge. This has the small 14x18 bass drum, 8x12, tom, 14x14 floor tom, and the 5x14 snare drum. I put on all new Remo ambassador heads top and bottom on the toms, and a new Remo Emperor bass drum head with a two inch strip of felt on the back head. All drums tuned wide open for that big open sound. All shells are 7 ply mahogany for that warm tone. These little Gretsch Jazz Catalina drums are just wonderful to play on with the right drum heads and tuning. This was my Caravan drum solo, which so many great drummers like Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Jeff Hamilton, Jo Jones, and so many others have played.

Great playing Ken! I had the chance to play a Gretsch birch Catalina kit 12 years ago and was amazed at the sound,feel,finish and low price point of this line!
These Gretsch Catalina are excellent drums for the money. Just put on the right drum heads and you will have that great Gretsch sound. Thanks for your comment.

These Gretsch Catalina with the right heads on them sound excellent. Of course it helps with the right drummer playing on them.
