As a kid in the 80s I had cloaks from various Star Wars figures that I would put on Zartan to complete his disguise.

I guess the controversy behind his OG file card was well intentioned, but I really don't think it did any lasting damage to us 80s kids. At least it spurred some constructive conversation and examination of cultural attitudes.
Plus Zartan is such a fun character
I think it got a better treatment with Road Pig. Implying Zartan's "schizophrenia" was what made him dangerous was a bit insensitive for a franchise so inclusive of disabled people.

When I was a kid I used to use Kenner's Return of the Jedi Luke Skywalker's cloth cloak for an additional disguise.

Since the 80s I have associated Zartan with Carlos, the jackal.
At the time, no one knew his face except for a single photo with a beard and glasses, shown on television news.

I had Zartan as the leader of The Bad Guys, The old Sgt Rock REMCO line where they were all dressed in black uniforms.
Had all of my off brand 3 3/4 inch figures, too. They were a catch all for figures that didn't have a home. They lived in an impressive base made out of Navarone, Space 1999, a bunch of coffee cans, and some playsets and plywood.
I changed his name back then from Zartan, to The Zodiac. I wasn't a big fan of the card, either, because it made his backstory a little out there. MINE- he was on par with Lord Humungus, from Road Warrior. He was a rebel leader, because back in the day there was a bunch of Rebels in central America in the news all the time.
They kept taking Adventure People hostage, and the Joes had to go in and get them back.

Zartan's storyline in the Marvel comics where he became the apprentice of the Sword Master Onihashi was one of the best stories in the ARAH.
This was excellent. Zartan was always my favorite COBRA characters because of his aesthetic and uniqueness. Thank you!
Interesting discussion about mental health. I don’t think someone who has schizophrenia would be able to function in the capacity that Zartan does as a gang leader and threat to Gi Joe.
I believe DDP did a comic where Zartan began to lose sense of who he was because of his adopting so many different personas. I don’t know if there was any push back with that portrayal.
That Dreadnoks mini series from DDP has been labled as non-cannon, the only DDP publication that is still cannon is the G.I.Joe declassifed mini series from 2006, because the events of it have been rererred to in the newer issues the Larry Hama series, I shall refer to the DDP books to what they have always been even before Larry relaunched the original book, "sh*ty ass fan fiction!"
@@jakeproven256 they did bring back the Joes from obscurity though. So I can not write off that whole series of books.
@@raypaz2947 even if that’s true, and I’m not saying it is, the stories should have been good. Devils due didn’t give two craps about G.I.Joe, they just wanted to profit off 80’s nostalgia. The artwork was mixed at best, the storytelling was awful, the sexism was maximum levels, the character designs were awful, (though to be fair some of that was due to the toys that were available at the time), and the characters were unlikable!
Edit: oh and just for the record I’m. a 2000’s kid, and I didn’t learn about G.I.Joe from devils due!
Another great review of an epic character! As a kid, I immediately had to get Zartan when I first saw his tv commercial and ad in the fold-out catalog. He was a cool concept for a guy that didn't wear a full mask and helmet. I liked how they portrayed Zartan in the Sunbow cartoon, but his character in the comic was that much more lethal.
I enjoy these deep dive looks at characters. I, not tooting my own horn, have a decent amount of knowledge on a lot of toylines, but always enjoy anything fresh or even old information more fleshed out. Great job!

The Devils Due Declassified series actually touches on the mental health issues Zartan has. Still, it is more that he has a deteriorating mental disease, which causes him to forget who he is, and he takes medication to suppress this degenerating sickness.

There is a common sun allergy called PMLE Ploymormphus light eruption, amongst other sun related allergies. This may also be an influence behind Zartans sunlight reaction.
Great Video! Love Zartan, he has always been my favorite figure since I was a kid, probably cause he was one of the 1st G.I.Joe figures I owned. Its Really hard to find one with the vest and hip guards intake, but I found one. However the O-ring is really bad. I wasn`t aware of how hard it may be to fix, nor have I ever heard of the controversy over the file card.

Great video…Zartan was one of the first deluxe characters I remember getting. Dealing with mental health issues is always a tricky subject am I applaud you for discussing this head on. I also appreciate you highlighting resources for people to get help…as a matter of constructive criticism, I wish that information was earlier in the video.

Zartans fellow Dreadnoks Road-Pig and Buzzer potentially have mental problems too, Road-Pig had a split personality in the comics, and Buzzer has a genius level intellect but episodes of somewhat mindless violence (to me his filecard seems to suggest he had a mental breakdown, or extreme personality change ?)

I played with Zartan more than any other figure.
Great episode! As a police officer, I was a certified Crisis Intervention Officer. That training was certainly an eye opener, and was the first time I had saw mental health beyond the stigmas.

The swamp skier was cheap and didn't float. I think its purpose was to allow Hasbro to sell what they knew would be a key figure in the cartoon and comic books at a higher price.

Great interview with a Medical Health Karen, anyone triggered by a toys file card in 1994 was 30 years before they or them’s time.
First time I heard of this so called contraversy in regards Zartan ,one of my most wanted Action Force (Gi.Joe) figures.As a younger brother to a person who suffers from Schizophrenia I have no issues with this file card. As with all people and conditions ,there are varying levels of the condition and a persons personality. We would like to think that all people are born actually good natured humans but unfortunately life and other external factors can affect this person,be it location,family ,surrounding conflicts or genetics etc.My brother as I used to know him was funny,outgoing but a bit boisterous .The brother I avoid now is violent, a bully and a hermit and controlling of my oldest brother who feels responsible for him. To sugar coat this is an insult to the suffering that family members have to endure. We have to be realistic about these conditions and also be honest.
The controversy reached my mother. I was NOT allowed to purchase or possess this action figure. I actually liked Zartan, but I never much cared for the Dreadknocks, his siblings, etc.

Why is this even a debate? Zartan has a mental illness...he is an assassin and a career criminal. Would Batman fans EVER debate that the Joker is a psychopath killer with a series of personality disorders and mental illnesses? Why do Joe fans ever agonize about this fact of his character--there from the start.....
