Garth Brooks Makes Grand Ole Opry History with the Opry's First Encore

- Garth Brooks performed during two sold-out shows at the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday night, delivering what Opry staff members believe to be the first-ever encore performance after the Opry House’s big red curtain had been lowered to end a show. A few minutes after the night’s second show had concluded, the sellout 4,400-plus fans in attendance were still in the auditorium chanting for more from show-closer Brooks. Hearing the roar of the crowd from backstage, Brooks and band obliged. The show went back on the air, and the curtain went back up for several more Brooks favorites, including the encore lead-off, “That Summer.” Following several other favorites including a cover of George Strait’s “The Fireman,” the Opry member and reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year ended his two-show Opry night with the classic “The Dance” before shouting, “Thank you guys for one of the coolest freaking nights of my life!”
It was the Opry’s biggest competition, The Louisiana Hayride, that first exposed Williams to a wide radio audience, but when his 1949 record “Lovesick Blues” became a monumental popular hit, the powers that be in Nashville relented, and Williams made his Opry debut. His performance on this day in 1949, during which he performed six encores of “Lovesick Blues” for a wildly enthusiastic live audience, led to regular appearances over the next three years.

Hank Williams took to the microphone for his Grand Ole Opry debut on June 11, 1949, electrifying a live audience at Ryman Auditorium that called Williams out for six encores and had to be implored not to call him out for more in order to allow the rest of the show to go on. FACT
The first encode after the big red curtain dropped, the show was over. Its first time anyone has made the Opry raise the curtain back up for an encode. Hank sr im sure was proud and watching down on t his amazing feet. Dont down play greatness guys. Garth is an amazing human being and has broke many records.

Marty Robbins ran over into the Ernest Tubbs Record hour every time he would perform on the Opry! He was the last one on the show and he would run over because of so many encores! Just listen to Marty then listen to Brooks! Marty had a great voice and wrote great songs! Check out Don’t Worry About Me and I Walk Alone!

That's not true my grandfather was a truck driver that regularly stopped at the Opry, he told me hank came back on 3x on one night and many times the fans wouldn't set down or stop clapping until he came back at least once.

Dang it!! We had tickets for the upper balcony for the 2nd show but had awesome seats for the first show so didn't stay for the 2nd show.

Most are mentioning Patsy or Hank Sr., which I believe would all be at the original Ryman. (To be clear, even if that's the case I agree the title should be changed, just honestly curious.)

Garth Brooks is nobody next to Hank Williams (6 encores), Connie Smith (4 encores), Roy Acuff (who got multiple encores MANY times in the 53 years he was there), Marty Robbins (multiple encores on multiple nights), Jimmy C. Newman (two encores). Johnny Russell (multiple encores on multiple nights), Johnny Cash (3-4 encores each time he played the Opry), and there are so many more. Those people played the Opry regularly. Garth Brooks wouldn’t even be on the Opry when he was in town, instead inviting Opry members on Saturday night to be at his show instead of playing the Opry. That is arrogant. No respect for him from me at all since.
although to be honest, he probably paid for 3 hours worth of stage time, told everyone and sold everyone 2 hours, then pretended hour 3 was an encore.

He’s got some good songs but he’s way overhyped. I live in East TN and I promise you his sound is far from unique. Go to damn near any bonfire, family reunion, county fair or church service and you can hear people identical to this singing all day long. The way he held his arms out and yelled here felt really egomaniacal too for some reason.
