I’m Canadian and I love West Virginia. The people are friendly. The driving is epic and so much fun (except for that speed trap outside Summersville) and the scenery is beyond compare. Your next stop should be a trip to see The New River Gorge Bridge. Stunning is too weak a word to describe the bridge and the area it spans. Get yourself there, mate!!
I worked at the capitol complex for 14 years. It is a great place to visit. Thanks for visiting. Our hills our great place to spend time. Pies and pints for pizza and Ellen’s for ice cream are not to be missed.
Thank you for this! I live and work in the Charleston area and it does have a lot of small city charm. Many locals only like to focus on things that have changed for the worse, but it’s still a terrific place. I hope you can make it back someday and maybe stay longer. Plan to take in the shops around Capitol Street or get outside of town and see some of the sights like Hawk’s Nest park. WV is also home to some of the USA’s most delightful small towns like Lewisburg and Harpers Ferry.

Love from Connecticut which you can consider an ally to the great state of West Virginia and it's awesome people :)
I am fortunate to live only 14 miles to the W.Va state line, live in Pennsylvania. Traveled many states, West Virginia is my absolute favorite, Truly a Awesome Beautiful state, and its people are friendly
Thank you for taking the time to explore a bit of West Virginia. It is lovely to walk around town and see people's front yard gardens and I have seen the river look blue, too, on sunny blue-sky days. So glad you got to visit. It is a joy to travel and explore small towns, rural roads, as well as those bustling cities with big names. Looking forward to seeing your other videos. Hope that you get to tour the rest of Wild & Wonderful, West by God Virginia and check out some music festivals some time or canoe or raft another of our many streams and rivers. To me, when one travels, one can appreciate so many things specific to the place you are in. Finding those beautiful gems, appreciating architectural details, and chance-encounters meeting folks here and there. The world is really a small place and I love that you have helped to make it smaller with your travels & sharing them here.
I bet you know all about Sandstone Grade then? I imagine it's got a reputation in the trucking community. Every other time I go up the turnpike somebody is stuck on a runaway truck ramp or worse. Some way worse before word got around I guess.
Part 2 gaily mountain- I found a civil era hotel...The Glenn Ferris Inn. On the Gauley River, this area was a true treasure for an old history teacher. My room was decorated with vintage. The restaurant was a quaint little tea room, food was great and the staff, well, delightful. We had great fun telling old wva stories. I had my coffee in the upstairs sun room looking across the river where the union army set up a permanent camp. The General - Rutherford B. Hayes, took his meals at the Inn. The current owners are a very real rags to riches example of what you might find around the next bend.....if you can avoid the interstates. Watch out for those hair pins!
I'm a resident of Charleston. I have lived here my whole life. Yes, we have our problems but the culture in WV is something that you won't encounter anywhere else in America. WV was built on MANY different cultural backgrounds and over the many years they have all blended together to form Appalachian culture (it's a real thing). As you mentioned, we do have our issues, as does any city. BUT we are a friendly bunch and when disaster strikes or a need needs met we all come together to do what needs/must be done. I love that about my state/city. I am impressed that you basically did pronounce Kanawha correctly but Appalachia is Appa-lach-CHA not Appa-la-SHA. The river is filthy and polluted but it can be a nice view and provides nice recreation in your back yard. If you come back to the city I recommend Capitol Street. It still has brick pavers as the road and has many unique stores/restaurants. It's the best street in downtown Charleston.
DaBear Baloo Agreed, and the kind people are one of the reasons I want to move to the state along with the lovely sceneries, fresh air, affordable living (so I can fulfill my obsession with having my own house which I'm thrilled just thinking about it), and healthy and fun recreational recreational activities for the family :)
Exceptional vlog. I haven't been to West Virginia, but having watched here I would indeed like to visit Charleston, West Virginia. The cafe sounds good. And I love a good, all encompassing museum.
West Virginia is the most natural, beautiful state, in the whole country... It's mostly all woods here, and small mountains, I have lived here all my life.. I've been to California and back and traveled alot, and there is no state in America that will compare
Kanawha (Can-ah-wa) , it is native Iroquois for" water way/canoe way". The dome is gold leaf inlay. It was on there originally, but was removed at some point. Then redone as solid gold, but redone a few years later as the black and gold dome. I live 10 minutes from down town.
Hey! Great video, Lawrence! In researching my family history, the trail has taken me through West Virginia, so this is interesting. I grew up saying "warsh" (wash), "warshrag" (washrag), Warshington (Washington), etc. I didn't even realize it, not until I studied linguistics, and had it pointed out! Yes, my family all used to say it that way, but that's changing. (I remember my grandma would say "pie-ANN-uh" for piano!) I love how you bring out the best in your videos. (I love great museums like the one in this video.) Best wishes from central Illinois!
I’m a born and raised West Virginian and I absolutely love that you loved our little city. Not visiting Tudor’s was a poor decision though, it’s the BEST 🙌🏼 If you think our bacon is weird just try biscuits and gravy and count all the differences in that compared to your home 😂 If you ever come back be sure to visit the Capitol Market in the summer when it’s filled with farm vendors and fresh flowers and produce 💖🌿🍅
Local here, saw “Chralston” and I though, “nah he can’t be talking about our state, he must be talking about SC.” To my supprise I read “West Virginia” :)
I love this. Just happened to stumble across this video. Yes, the museum is fabulous and the dome is gold plated, not painted. There is also a genealogy area, in the cultural center. You can look up marriage certificates, birth and death records, all kinds of cool stuff. Really enjoyed your prospective!!
The Ohio river can be quite a beautiful river when the rain has not swollen it and made it muddy. Charleston has many museums, art galleries, restaurants and a massive downtown mall along with numerous parks and riverfront walkways. By the way, you did a fairly good job at pronouncing Kanawha! Just remember every state has it's stereotypes and rough areas but West Virginia is truly a beautiful state and the people are kind, generous and hard working. They care about education as well as the arts and they know how to have fun! Thank you for putting out this positive video about our state! Take care and hope your adventures are always good ones!
kanawha is pronounced kuhnaw, and the river is polluted as all get out, swim in at your own risk, giant ass catfish reside in there some the size of vw bugs
Do some research before you make these negative comments. The Kanawha River is the cleanest it has been in many years. Bald eagles have returned to the area as a result. There is a lot of beauty to be seen and fun to be had there if you can avoid the pessimistic people
Not sure if you flew to Charleston, but the airport is one of my favorite things about the city. It sits atop a large hill, and in the early or late hours, you can see the runway lights while driving down interstates 64, 77/79. A beautiful city! Thanks for the video
It's been forever since I've been to West-by-God Virginia, but I recall it was lovely. The local accent is much different from my own central Texas drawl, but I savvied the lingo.
i think i recall that chuck yeager flew a plane under the bridge in charleston and really threw the town leaders into a tizzy about what to do about it.
We lived in WV (Charleston and South Charleston for nearly 10 years back in the mid 70's - mid 80's. Our children were born there. Wonderful memories! Great festivals!
If you ever find yourself back in West Virginia you have to travel to Beckley. They have an exhibition coal mine you can tour. It features the old houses the miners used to live in and even let you ride on one of the coal cars into a non-operational mine. All for $20.
In my years of being born and raised in Kanawha County, I think you’re the first person that I’ve ever heard call the Kanawha river clean looking! Haha. Growing up, friends would swim in it, but I would never do so because of the potential chemicals in it. But I totally agree, the Cultural Center is one of the BEST representations of our state. I’m glad that you enjoyed yourself. It’s Almost Heaven!
I was born and raised in Charleston WVa and still live here! I live down on the east end of downtown. And 2 blocks from the river ❤ This is my home! Thanks for this lovely video.
I’m from West Virginia 10mins away from the capital and you should go to the new river George bridge fun fact: my stepdad is one of the builders of it too.
I just bought a house in WV on the outskirts of Charleston just 12 minutes away. We spent 3 days vacationing out there last year and I've driven through it several times going down south and I absolutely fell in love with it, I just had to move out there! Haven't been to Charleston yet so this intrigued me. Great video! Cheers from Ohio 😊
Our capitol building was designed by Cas Gilbert. His design of the State Supreme Court chamber, within the capital building, is absolutely beautiful. When he finished the construction of our capitol,he was asked to design the US SUPREME COURT. The U.S. Supreme Court design is patterned after our Court. Also I recommend taking the guided tour through the capitol building. It is well worth it! Peace... Andy
I lived 10 years in Huntington, WV, an hour's drive to the west. The river is pronounced "Kanaw", with emphasis on the 2nd syllable. The"wha" is just ignored by the natives.
For any of your viewers that love crafts. Every Spring, the Capital has a quilt display with giant quilts hanging along the walls. Quilting also tells stories of ancestral British Isles with gradual transitionin into frontier life. Even those with a casual interest would enjoy the remarkable displays all hand stitched.
Grew up nearly all my life in Charleston. Was sad to leave it for college, but still in State and nearby(Go Herd!). Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
I live 40 minutes from Charleston and West Virginia is great for me. We recognise our problems and now we are taking steps to make West virginia great. I am excited for my state. As far as Opioids go Huntington is making Massive strides. Not sure if thus means anything to any one.
My mom moved to Charleston when she was about 15 and I went there with her in the early 2000s. It's a nice town. I wish she were still around to watch your video! She showed me some of the things you talked about!
Awesome with some good things about West Virginia! Other suggestions from me are the cities/towns in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, primarily Lexington, Staunton, Harrisonburg, New Market, Luray, and Winchester, with the surrounding small towns. Lots of history, good food, museums, and stories, especially Lexington and Staunton.
BORN AND RAiSE IN CHARLESTON. I HAVE BEEN GONE FOR OVER 50 YEARS but still carry my love FOR THE CITY AND THE STATE. EVERY TIME I HEAR JOHN DENVER'S COUNTRY ROADS IT MAKES ME HOMESICK.
When in Charleston, stroll up the Carriage Path trail across the river from downtown while listening to John Denver's classic song, "Take Me Home, Country Roads" song. Personifies the state and its vibe.
I wasn't born in WV, I came here on purpose. I think the river winding through the city is beautiful, despite the rusty chemical and coal business along the banks, which came about because that's what was needed at the time. This place could be a resort, but then I couldn't afford to live here.
You did it! You hit 50K! OMG, I am so happy for and proud of you, Laurence! Halfway to your first YT Play button! 😍 *Also: It's the dress shirt and tie that did it. That's what put you over the threshold, for sure.*
It may be pretty but everyone that lives around me knows you should never swim or even eat the fish out of the kanawha river. The 2014 chemical spill scarred everyone
I am a resident of Charleston WV, born here, raised here, started a family here, worked in the coal mines, been in and on the river and I must say that this is probably the single beat review I have ever seen anywhere of my hometown. You sir should be commended as your perspective was so wonderfully fresh and positive and your pronunciation of Kanawha was the closest I have ever heard from a non-native. Thank you for your amazingly positive review and you are most certainly welcome to visit at any time. Check out Tudor's Biscuit World next time you come back and stop at a local petrol station and get a pepperoni roll, a local delicacy.
Grew up in Charleston WV. Funny story, my grandpa worked for carbide and he would do chemistry shows at schools and other events. One year he did a show at the capital for Earth Day. One of the experiments causes a loud popping noise and when it went off inside the building made it sound incredibly loud ( it knocked dust of the chandeliers) they actually evacuated the building for a short time.
As a New Yorker I'd have to agree with you, and it sounds like a place that's appealing to visit. I've actually been to Charleston, West Virginia, but only as a stop on a road trip for about an hour to stretch our legs and be out of a vehicle for a while. We walked around for a bit but were just wandering around with no clue, we felt like fish out of the water, haha. Too bad we didn't know about these cool places mentioned in the video, we would've had a good time. (FYI, us New Yorkers avoid Times Square like the plague, it's probably the most dreaded place to be for us, so the locals you see around there are just unlucky enough to have to work around there or didn't come up with a good way of telling visiting friends or family to go explore on their own and ended up being very reluctant tour guides, haha!)
Well this was an enjoyable watch. Glad I ran across it. I'm a lifelong native of southern WV, in the neighboring county of Fayette. Was interesting to see a first-hand perspective from a non-native. In my entire 40+ years here, I think I've only met one or two people from the UK. I guess I always assume our stereotypes preceed us and that we just get overlooked as tourism destinations. Whitewater rafting tourism notwithstanding. Thanks for coming to check out our state. I'm super pleased it was an enjoyable experience for you. You were getting pretty close with your pronunciation of Kanawha. For us locals I'd say most similarly said as kuh-GNAW. We just kinda ignore that "a" on end. Anyway, thanks for visiting us. I hope you manage to make it back again someday!
Charleston, WV born and raised! I love my home state and don’t plan on leaving it anytime soon. Thank you for showing the positive of this beautiful state and I was so happy to see that you included the state museum! I love it there!
The KANAWHA RIVER & the County of KANAWHA that’s our Capitol, Charleston is in was named by the Catawba Indians & means “Friendly Brother”. Also the KANAWHA River would freeze solid in the 1920’s to the 1950’s my Grandpa would hitch up his horse drawn sleigh & travel from St. Albans, WV (a few miles from Charleston) to Charleston to trade his vegetables for meat. He had 8 children & he was an honest & God loving man. I have lived in St. Albans for 65 years. This is an awesome video & thank you for appreciating our beautiful state. ☺️
I lived in the North Hills in the 00's. Miss it badly; I had to return to my native SoCal due to family issues. Squirrel Hill was a big hangout for me. Watched soccer at CMU. Shame to see it in the news globally. :(
Born and breed ten miles south of Charleston in a little town named Marmet. I live in Jacksonville, Florida now and i am figuring out how to get back home and still make a living. I miss it it every hour of every day
As a WV man, I can say I'm glad you made this video. They now have the capital marked off from public view. But it is a beautiful building. ( I know schools still field trip there) . At one point less than 30 years ago the dome was solid 24kt gold leaf. They added the broze for more outlines and cost effectiveness in the 2010s. The archive museum is the best I visit it yearly and there's always something new. A cool fact, my home town Odd,WV once had a our boxes on display 1890s still in service til till 1991ish oldest mail boxes in use at the time. The little post office is still in operation today despite threats of shutting down.
excellent job on saying Kanawha (ke-naw-a)! sometimes you can find a little bit of gold leaf on the ground when bits have fallen off of the capital dome. When I worked for West Virginia University surgery and trauma Services I was also the director of the West Virginia cultural Center theater. Downstairs is the free museum and upstairs you can find archived history on microfiche. Later on I would also work briefly for a senator at the Capitol building. There are some back stairs that you can go up to an area outside that is just below the dome. BTW, if we telephone Ohio, we are Southerners but if we call Virginia we are northerners but most of us are friendly people and even friendlier drivers. You ought to try Harding's Restaurant or a Tudors for a hardy breakfast. ❤️ love from Cross Lanes, (Wild and Wonderful) West Virginia 👵
Also, the air is extremely polluted from the multitude of chemical factories running for 50 miles up and down the Kanawha River; the factories operate mostly at night to mitigate the effect of sunlight, but it is one toxic, hazardous environment. Southwest of Charleston towards Alum Creek has the cleanest air because it is upwind from the Kanawha Valley. Beautiful place but not where I would choose to live.
Thank you so much for such a genuine uplifting and positive video about WV. We don’t get positive reviews at all heck we don’t even get acknowledged period. This touched my heart, thank you.
I live literally two miles from the capital building and I loved hearing someone talk about things they love about my city. You said Kanawha pretty close to perfect. 😀 It truly is a great place we have our issues but who doesn’t ?

🦄👍
I’m from just outside of Charleston! I want to say thank you for focusing on some of the nice things about our state capitol without harping on the negatives or making fun of our state as so many do!
My Dad grew up in Logan, W.VA. n I still have family there. It is the most beautiful place on Earth!!
Holy cow, I'm from Logan, W.Va too lol
My mom grew up in Logan! My grandparents ran a general store there long ago! My family name is Winters/Gilpin 😊 if ya know any!
I love West Virginia. I spend a lot of time in Charleston for research (I’m a historian at WVU) and my grandparents live in So. Charleston and Nitro and I went to Marshall U. in Huntington. Love seeing West Virginia shown in a positive light. 💕
Born, raised, and still reside in Charleston! We do have a beautiful city! Thanks for pointing out the positives! And I'm glad you had an enjoyable stop here!
Hawks nest, Kanawha falls, and Babcock state park are must sees. Some of the true few beauties left here.
You have to come back and try Tudors biscuit world, every westvirginian could agree to that
Brady Jones yess!!!!
More like pies and pints or secret sandwich society. But tudors is really good to!!
Faxxxx Mary B is the best
Brady Jones DUKE!!
I can agree!!
Daniel Todd Ellen’s is amazing. Definitely one of my favorites.
Man I miss pies and pints.
I'm so happy you did this video, Thank You! I was Born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia! I'm a proud coal miners daughter, and it was so nice to finally see someone look at our Beautiful state in a Positive light for a change!! God Bless You, and Hope you come back another time!

You probably seen more of America than most Americans. You go Laurence and congratulations on 50000 subscribers.
I'm so happy to see all my fellow natives here in the comments. Glad you enjoyed your visit, Laurence, WV is truly magnificent and does not get the credit it deserves.
Growing up in Boone County, spent a lot of time in the Kanawha Valley. Thank you Lawrence!!
Daniel Gygax A Boone native online. There are dozens of us!
SSJ4Gogitta I live in sissonville
Ashford, WV here. Represent! 👊
Campbell's creek!!
Van, WV here. About 50 miles south of Charleston. I’m a fein for an outsiders view on things that we take for granted.
I live like 1 hour away from Charleston and when I saw this in my recommended feed, I clicked and was really happy to see a good quality video talking about my home state
Walledfilms Productions I'm not from WV but I'm considering moving here and can I just say...
I respect your state and its kind, hardworking people and your state does have so much to offer including delicious food, lovely sceneries, affordable living, and so much healthy recreational activity for the family :)
I want you to know we care about our West Virginian brothers and sisters, you guys rock! 👍 😁 The state rocks!
"FROM THE W.V STATE LINE IN PENNSYLVANIA" TERMINOLOGY PEOPLE! UNEDUCATED! THAT SENTENCE WAS A DEAD GIVE AWAY!
An awsome state.
@@sandyvanperson6637 You are screaming!
Thanks for the nice words about my hometown!💕
There is so much more to see in West Virginia. I hope you come back!
His wifes family is from the south western part of WV. I forget exactly where, but he did a video of when they came for a family reunion.
Tarah is from Welch/War area, waaaaaay down south lol.
I love trucking through charleston actually. Prob one of my favorite places
I bet you know all about Sandstone Grade then? I imagine it's got a reputation in the trucking community. Every other time I go up the turnpike somebody is stuck on a runaway truck ramp or worse. Some way worse before word got around I guess.
@@d.riprock1546 I’ve been through there. Ive also been down cabbage in Oregon. Been trucking all over the east coast since day 1
Part 2 gaily mountain- I found a civil era hotel...The Glenn Ferris Inn.
Thanks for talking about the museum. So many locals don't even know it exists. It really is worth a 2 hour walk through.
This was completely unexpected but very proud to see an outsider enjoy our city & leave a positive report
I want to thank you for making a video of my homestate of wv and my capital city Charleston. Well done Sir.
A visit to WV needs to include the small towns, villages, off the map. The people are amazing.
@@cocotaveras8975 it is my retirement dream State.
DaBear Baloo Mine too, mine too my friend. Have a lovely day :)
And GO WV!!!
It's charleston south carolonia sc
I think the other Charleston is in South Carolina. 👌
I have lived in Charleston for almost a year. Taylor Books is a must!
I love Taylor books
Very true...the Gazette used to have a pic the CFD dive team took of a huge catfish.
@@selinaburke7645 all that coal runoff and agent orange in the river
I live in another mid-size city, so i had a feeling the river wasnt clean.
@@lokimartin9686 why Agent Orange? Was it manufactured there?
Do some research before you make these negative comments. The Kanawha River is the cleanest it has been in many years. Bald eagles have returned to the area as a result. There is a lot of beauty to be seen and fun to be had there if you can avoid the pessimistic people
Not sure if you flew to Charleston, but the airport is one of my favorite things about the city. It sits atop a large hill, and in the early or late hours, you can see the runway lights while driving down interstates 64, 77/79. A beautiful city! Thanks for the video
I'm a coal miner and a Photographer in southern WV. Thank You for the Video.
Named the airport after him as a response I guess lol
@@hampshire2821 they should change the name of the airport to---- crabby old liar that sues everyone all the time.
He flew under the South Side Bridge
Look if we weren’t naming things after Byrd we named things after Chuck. It is probably in the law books.
We lived in WV (Charleston and South Charleston for nearly 10 years back in the mid 70's - mid 80's. Our children were born there. Wonderful memories! Great festivals!
Thanks for loving our state....
I was born & raised in Chas.West Virginia.Glad you liked it & had fun here.
The views of the Capital and the Skyline from, the,Hills across the river are Fantastic and I liked the food last time i was there
I was born and raised in Charleston WVa and still live here! I live down on the east end of downtown. And 2 blocks from the river ❤ This is my home! Thanks for this lovely video.
I’m from West Virginia 10mins away from the capital and you should go to the new river George bridge fun fact: my stepdad is one of the builders of it too.
I think you mean New River Gorge bridge. It is a beautiful work of art!
Peace... Andy
Never been to Charleston, WV, but it does look like a nice place to visit...LOVE your videos, Laurence 😊💕!
It is come on down
@@terrysnodgrass2655 thanks for the invite😉
I normally hear/say "ka-NAH-wa", and I'm from Huntington and have lived here literally all my life.
@@dead-claudiaI'm from here and pronounce it that way too!
Charleston is big enough to have most of the amenities, but small enough to still have a feel of community.
Almost Heaven West Virginia! Thank you for the positive video about my Home Town!
Grew up nearly all my life in Charleston. Was sad to leave it for college, but still in State and nearby(Go Herd!). Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
I lived in Charleston for 5 years growing up and have very fond memories. We did a lot of hiking, camping and canoeing. It's a beautiful state.
The world needs more positivity, keep it up lad
Mose Schrute Agreed :)
Truer than words can express
BORN AND RAiSE IN CHARLESTON. I HAVE BEEN GONE FOR OVER 50 YEARS but still carry my love
FOR THE CITY AND THE STATE. EVERY TIME I HEAR JOHN DENVER'S COUNTRY ROADS IT MAKES
ME HOMESICK.
I lived there 16 years and my daughter is still there. I miss it tons. but i do go and visit every year since i moved back to my home state of Kansas
Can't watch yet, but I was born in Charleston lol. Should enjoy this when I can watch it
So was I ! Parents are from East Bank and Marmet.
Me too East end "Black Hawk Hollow" then the West side
Nice video. I worked for a company based in Charleston for 40 years, and I made lots of great friends there, as well as visiting from time to time.
*Also: It's the dress shirt and tie that did it.
Laurence, have you done a poll on the nationality of your viewers yet? American here.
It's not NYC or Times Square. I think that's a good thing.
@@TheSpogNYC thanks for the info
Thank you for calling the Kanawha River clean haha. Thanks for visiting and come back soon!
Great job of pronouncing our Beautiful Kanawha River!!! Thank you for stopping by to enjoy our City of Charleston & Our Beautiful Capitol. Be safe.
Pittsburgh would be really fun to do! Tons of history and a TON of fun local words and sayings! Yinz will love it!💕❤️
@Guss Ruffee You from Filthadelphia by any chance? Lol
Agree to disagree
This video makes me homesick. I miss you, West Virginia!!... just not the bumpy roads so much.. lol.
The capitol building is gorgeous. Wow!
Kanawha river isn’t clean was chemical leak a while back but good stuff
It truly is a great place we have our issues but who doesn’t ?
