Had the same in Greece in the late 2000s. My hotel gave Raki away to everyone. I didn't like it so never bothered but my friends were all really ill. Turned out the hotel manager was making it himself. It was basically moonshine, not actual Raki.

If u go to the toilet go with your drink or empty it out first, never turn your back on your drink around no one period . Sad situation hearts out to the family.

I always stick to a bottle if in a nightclub club etc. although I actually drink Guinness so I drink that by pint glass 🍺! but only when in a bar and I can see my drink at all times or my friend or I will make sure our drinks are ok if one of us goes to the bar or toilet. Learned not to drink the rubbish they give away in restaurants and Sometimes bars In holiday destinations. This is a terrible situation & extreme but still Stay safe. ✌️
Even bottled beers and popular brands can be methanol spiked. They are filled and resealed and even bottles in supermarkets can be a risk in Asia. There's simply no way to be 100% safe.

They said in the clip that the free shots were from NaNa Backpackers Hostel. I’ve stayed there, but I don’t think I had any free Lao Lao shots there. I worked at a hostel in Vientiane where they used to give out free shots, but they’d stopped by the time I started working there. This was about a decade ago, and I remember even around that time there were tourists who’d died after drinking Lao Lao.

I never was one for the cheap Asian fire water, which varies by name from country to country and is often made on the cheap with methanol. Hundreds die and thousands go blind every year in India from it.
Such a tragic waste of lives, heart breaking for the families. Alcohol should be banned it’s a legal drug and destroys lives and families. Why is it so important to drink alcohol I just don’t get it, it’s poison yet why can’t people see that.

Well, that's the tourism industry in Laos down the toilet for a year. Backpackers only go to Laos because it's the cheapest country in SEA. Now, Myanmar aside, it's the most deadly.
As someone who travelled Laos fairly recently that is most definitely not the reason people go to Laos 😂 in fact, vast majority skip it and go straight to Vietnam or Cambodia
The term 'lace' implies poison was deliberately added to bottles of drink but it's probably not the case. More likely cheapest/counterfeit alcohol which has been distilled without proper manufacturing controls resulting in some bottles containing poisonous methanol instead of only drinkable ethanol.

When I traveled around SE Asia back in 2013, this was an issue. It was a common warning amongst backpackers to beware of drinking local spirits.
