- The Challenge: 3000 miles in 12 days. Cycling across 3 timezones. 20 hours a day in the saddle. It's the World's Toughest Bike Race.
In the summer of 2018, Manchester City’s Head of Sports Medicine, Dr. Max Sala, took on the Race Across America, all to raise awareness and funds for City in the Community’s One City disability programme.
Everyone at the Club and foundation are extremely proud of Max for this phenomenal achievement and the commitment he has given to this challenge over the past three years.
All money raised will help to create new opportunities for disabled people across Greater Manchester and continue to support City in the Community’s nine disability teams. Please donate below:

Stumbled upon this as cyclist 2 years in. Humbling and inspiring, I really really understand his frustration of not finishing but the rational thought is clear: The effort is massive and the mission is accomplished in helping and inspiring children as well as athletes around the world.
What a great story and human being. I’m a cyclist myself you could feel his suffering amazing thank you for sharing his story.
I made a donation in support of Max’s ride. I am so proud of what he represents.
Incredibly inspiring! Currently riding to raise money to fight kids cancer, and this is well and beyond anything I even thought possible, exactly what I needed to see. The distances rode over that short of a time span are mind boggling. Should absolutely be super proud of himself.
The only shame would be if you didn't give it your best effort. I can see by your passion and disappointment that you left everything on the road to help this amazing charity. Congrats on an amazing acheivement.
unbelievable
Wow what a hero.
Incredible documentary. huge inspiration❤️
All my respect to Max and the crew
Impresionante 👏🏽👏🏽
As a liverpool fan I hate city but what can you say, respect Max 👏👏👏👏
Awesome video. Perfectly edited and perfect background music. Love it. Thanks for this amazing video
You are a life time inspiration for me🌹❤️💪🏼
Only just found this so just want to say well done to Max what an achievement. You could have given up so much sooner. Hope by now you feel proud of yourself. Oh and thats from a Palace supporter as well. 😉
Immense bravery, Max is a hero for just attempting such a huge challenge. Well done to him and what an incredible support team. Dreams can come true. Good luck Max.
I hope now he’s had time to reflect that Max knows he let nobody down 🙏🏼 In true City style he fought until the end, even if that end was not his desired goal he could not have given anymore, it was an immense effort. I hope, for him, he goes back and completes it one day 🙏🏼 p.s. That bike 😍
I biked 100 miles when I was young, can't imagine across US
Can we give 1000 likes for our INCREDIBLE Max Sala and the team? This is something that you don't see in everyday life.
Very sack am really crying for he's this story 😶😐😢😥
This man really went half way across America. I would have passed out the first 100
Just finished watching the film. Dr Sala, you should feel absolutely no shame. It was an incredible feat of endurance in ridiculously hot and challenging conditions. You should be immensely proud of your effort and what you’ve done for those children. Bravo, Sir. I doubt even Coppi ever came close to suffering like you did.
Brilliant and brave effort
I would say it is one of the hardest but not the worlds hardest bike race, there is a whole support team..meanwhile Trans Am Bike Race is 4200 miles SELF supported, I would say that is tougher.
The hardests races are the ones race at the professionnal level by professionnals cyclists. Whos averaging 25 to 40 thousands k a year. It is a war every race !
Brilliant cause, incredible effort.
As a mad keen cyclist and lifelong City fan, I’d love to see City get more closely involved with the sport. It would be a perfect fit, especially given the proximity of British Cycling just across the road.
Many Italian teams also have cycling clubs. Lazio and Roma are good examples. When I went to the champions league game in Rome I nearly bought the cycling kit as a souvenir but couldn’t bring myself to do it! It would be great if City could start something. Imagine the excellent publicity gained by promoting a healthy lifestyle? Perhaps do some “sportive”or “granfondos” events starting at the Etihad for all ages and abilities ranging from a few laps of the campus for the kids and out into the Peak District for the keen adults?
At least sell some well designed quality cycling kit.....
Who dislike this video 🤔🤔🤔
@30s Milkman2 there are 2 dislike mate am talking about that
I think some idiots

👏👏👏👏
What a boy! Amazing effort and absolutely no need to feel disheartened... Truly inspiring, chapeau 👏👏
Love that Max is inspiring a year on. 😍

This was an incredible show of mental, and physical fortitude. Max you've inspired me. Like if you were touched by his determination.
Congratulations on your excellent effort. Inspirational
You needed a chiropractor when you had the acute neck pain! All that stress on your cervical spine from leaning over for hours on end takes a toll. How was MRI of cervical spine? Were your discs intact.? You should consider riding a mountain bike so you don't lean over so much.
Only 3 time zones? I think the USA main land has 4
i dont do football, even though i am a manc, but fair play to max and his team, and the football team for being behind him.
yo the fince post was so funny i knew he was in pain but damn they had yo be cracking joke the wind hitting the top alone
Use recumbent bike.
No bottom pain
No hands pain
No neck pain and problem too!
And you ride in very comfortable position. :D
UCI = s*ck with his vertical torture machine named a "bike".
Huge credit to you Max. Just happy you made back safe and sound
All of you guys just did a great massive job
Wel done! 👏👏👏
Enjoyed this video great job.Best of luck for next race after recovery.
What a badass doctor!
Respect real Heroes are knowing also Health Bordes. Get fit again!
When i saw race, i thought this would be the walker sterling sane race but no

Seems like by 2021 Max should attempt this ride again. He should have all kinds of positive and negative data from his 2018 ride to finish in 12 days. He didn't really have much of a well thought out plan in 2018. He had a great support team that basically kept him from killing himself. But he didn't have any real structured plan other than ride as far as possible then try to sleep. He should try week-long rides to prep his body and mind for that type of bike riding. His team should also study and take notes from RAAM finishers who did well. It was a great goal but he needed to be a little more prepared mentally, and physically for it. He is an inspiration and you can tell he's incredibly genuine in his feelings. Hope he tries again! Go Max!
How my parents discribed their schoolway
sir i m qualify for the RAAM
SO NEED YOUR HELP ...
WHEN WE WILL IN THE TOCUH BY MEAN OF SOCIAL MEDIA??
why there are no Turkish subtitles 😒. I follow all the matches, I am saving money for the jersey, I am a fan of you and I love you, although you do not respect me and do not love you.
He needs a bike with more relaxed geometry. A Pinarello F10 is a short distance race bike. My neck started to hurt when I saw what he was riding.
So many uses for bungies, but to hold your head up is way out there. This race is done on the willingness, not letting any obstacle stop you and that's what your team did.
Steel Ball Run
You need a sports nutritionist to plan a diet for you based on your caloric demand; my guess is you weren't hydrated enough and getting enough carbs, protein and essential fats.
Why can't they sleep.. kinda messed up to disallow it
Great rookie attempt.
Looks intriguing ... and since its for a good cause, gonna watch it now.
Super video
Big performance
Respect
🔵⚪️
It's a wounderful show of what really is the RAAM, it's tremendously difficult and as human being it's possible to fail. Max, you are awesome, among many movie of RAAM, this is the one I like most. Thanks!
I am very interested in HOW exactly the organizers of RAAM are sure that the cyclist actually rides the bike ... and he is NOT got into the accompanying car and the car just rides at 25 km / h ???
Big respect!
These neck Problems may result of a wrong saddle.
Did you ever tried SQLab?
An expert of them raced RAA too.
forrest gump did this x3 but running
I learned about this race in Outside Magazine. The magazine included it in its list of the 13 Toughest races. Good work Max. I believe a countryman of mine competed in the race and it wasted him!
Pls let us know: Is his neck better? Can he attempt again?
Max!! You are an inspiration in so many ways. I love cycling but I am not in a very good shape - this experience you shared is an inspiration for me to try my best
Great achievement Max, What you lacked was a higher positioned handlebars where you would have stood in a more upright position and as a result, you would have less nack pain.
Outstanding man and hero to the people. Sala will return. Kudos man! "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go."
T. S. Eliot
Doc You should have a chat with Joe Barr he has finished this race, he’s an absolute animal on the bike watch his you tube film. His team and strategy are first class including using ice vests you would benefit from Joes experience. Well done doc on a fantastic effort .
The world loves the Tour de France, but often over look the RAAM. This is an amazing race and an amazing video.
Dr Sala. You have accomplished some thing much more than most of us capable to. You have my respect and admiration, looking forward to see you compete again in 2020. All the best 👏👏👏👏👍
I think it was in the late 80s edition of the RAAM and a competitor named Paul Solon had neck issues also. They used the bungee cord fix except they hooked the bungee cord to the seat. Pretty sure he was the eventual winner.
recently watch your documentary, you are a superhuman already. you have not given up Max, but instead you had given new hope to those that you had helped and those who watch your incrediable humanly effort. hope that you neck has fully recovered. best wishes from Singapore.
I’m wondering if he rode for longer and slept for longer if that would give his body a chance to recover.
that neck problem made him more aero. lol
I enjoyed every second of this , what a brave man, family and team . Can’t wait to see Max try again. Life is a jigsaw puzzle, sometimes you need to try another piece before they all fit 🧩
you all respect to this guy but something seams a little off with him after the race and during hell maybe the whole time but i do know ever in Europe bikes/cycling its a little different than in the usa
seams to me the doc should have bought some iv bags and gave it to him every couple hours he just didn't get nuff energy for how much he was burning
Wow that's simply amazing! I think everyone is proud of what you did! With a team like that I'm sure you'll finish the race next time!
Max you might have not finish the race but you won my heart 💙 We are proud of you ✌🏻
Fantastic. Great support from the team as well, making some hard calls. So important to have a team like that for an event like this.
40:34 damn that shook me a bit
Grande Max! Tanti auguri per il prossimo tentativo. Orgoglio cadoraghese!
Respect for Max for attempting. Forza Max!
