Hummingbirds become very numerous just before sunset to get their last drink before returning to their nest. Hummingbirds can hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 12--80 times per second. They can also fly backwards. They are among the smallest of birds about 3-4 inches long. Their name derives from the characteristic hum made by their rapid wing beats. They can fly at speeds exceeding 34 miles per hour. Hummingbirds drink nectar, a sweet liquid inside certain flowers. and by preying on insects and spiders.
This video was filmed in January, 2012 in Southern California near San Diego. Most of the birds are Anna's Hummingbird which is a year-round resident. You can occassionally see other hummingbirds that have migrated from Costa Rica. There are a total of 3 feeders which consume about 2 gallons per day of (use 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. Ie: 30 oz container. 30/5=6. 6x4=24 oz water, 6 oz granulated sugar; no dye has been added). The amount consumed suggest these feeders support hundreds of hummingbirds. The males have more colorful plummage. The location of the feeder is in the backyard overlooking a golf course. The feeders have been at this location for 3 years! Just before sunset they become numerous.

I believe those are Perky Pet hummingbird feeders. If you put them up, they will come...sorta like 'Field of Dreams' :-). Hanging a red ribbon on the feeder and/or planting red flowers in flower beds or hanging baskets near the feeder may also help in attracting them. Good Luck!

I'm curious, I don't see ant guards/moats on your feeders, do you not have any problems with ants?
Great video, thanks for uploading! I love watching these amazing birds!

Those are the best feeders. Hornets and wasps can't feed from the bottom because there is no separation. 36 ozs too so not having to fill too often. Only twice a day. I also have about a hundred or so all trying to feed at the same time. I have 22 feeders up and its not enough to accomodate all. I live in their flight path to Alaska.

What kind of feeder is that please? I've never fed hummingbirds. Do you just hang a few feeders and hope they'll find them? I'd love to do this! Thanks!

This is incredible! No doubt the sugar cane farmers idolize this owner. :) Maybe 40 lbs of sugar a week?? lol

What do you do if you have to leave for a few days? Does someone come in and re-fill their feeders?

shouldn't they be fighting over control of the food source ?
or are they so used to it that they are aware that there is enough sugar warer for everyone ?
