I think the self stirring mug is magnetic drive through the table. You can see the way the mug kinda pops off the table when lifted, and the stirring stops at that point.

    • @heyjustj
      @heyjustj 5 місяців тому +9

Was just coming to the comment to say this if someone else hadn’t already. Something similar to this is used in Haunted houses and things like that to have magical stirring potions. Often will hide a magnetic stirring plate used in chemistry inside a book, then put a potion bottle on the book with a magnetic stirring stick inside. The mixture is usually some combination of glycerine water and a sparkly mica powder and you get cool swirling potion bottles on top of spell books.

Considering it stops when he lifts it this would probably be the most sensible way to do it. It's probably similar to a self stiring device found on a lab

This was exactly my thoughts too. Also an easier way of doing it instead of trying to get a motor to continue working reliably enough while submerged in a liquid for extended periods of time.

I actually made a magnetic stirrer built into my old workbench for stirring my beakers and stuff lol. It was kind of a stupid idea in hindsight but it worked 😅

    • @bobtrevino4413

That’s a great observation and that’s how we did it. We had a very strong rare earth magnet on an adjustable speed motor under the table. We used one of those fidget spinners as a really good bearing with another magnet attached. The only frustrating part was that we didn’t have the time to make the fork not spin on its own axis. If you were holding a spoon with your fingers and stirring a coffee cup, it would stay on the same point, but rotate around the cup just the same. Oh well, it was a TV series and we didn’t a whole lot of time to spend on each of the numerous gags for that show!

That's a very common misconception about The Dam Busters. In fact, George had already planned out his opus by the time he was eleven, and always intended for The Dam Busters to be made in 1955 so that he would have the footage available twenty years later.

13:40 - It's a spinner under the table w/ a puck at the bottom that holds the spoon and spins when the magnet under the table spins.... That's why it stops when he picks it up.

    • @clockwork204

There also seems to be some slight resistance separating the mug from the table, so yeah definitely involves a magnet.

Scott needs to do a crossover with corridor. I think it would be great to discuss props role in digital work, those hybrid areas where digital and real need to interact, and the times when the digital artists need the prop team to create them great reference materials for a situation to get it to look real.

Horse pun so bad/good it made Scott's head do the pun-punchline head-turn! (If Matt in the back blends into the scenery, does that make him Matte in the back?) That kind of coffee mug could really stir up some trouble, but those wire stunts were a real knock-out!

13:30 - I think you're right about the spoon glued to a puck in the bottom of the mug, but I doubt there's a waterproof motor in the coffee. The motor is probably under the table and magnets cause the puck to spin. You can see it slowing down when they pick up the mug.

Okay, only one correction for the videos that I shared with Scott. The motorcycle launch did have pyro, just not the type that had fire associated with it. The metal “can” underneath was a mortar that projects the energy in a particular fashion. We had a small, but concentrated, charge at the bottom and the wooden discs pushed the motorcycle upwards, like a solid piston. Those discs separated after the blast and then there are nothing more than those discs moving about, so it’s much safer. Physics-wise, still the same function until the energy is spent. We did add some beautiful fire on the day of shooting!

The string coffee cup might be a Magnetic agitator that they use for beakers in labs. It looks like a little hot plate that's about Cup size, with a magnet in it. You place a beaker of fluid on it, with a small magnet or ferrous cube, and it stirs the liquid without any mechanical connection.

Canada Dry is a Dr Pepper Snapple brand, now owned by the Keurig Dr Pepper company.
As to armorers, it’s almost as if you should hire experienced prop makers and not random assistants who accidentally get people killed.
Methylcellulose is basically your off the shelf powder laxative. It’s also used to thicken sauces and a lot of cosmetic/household products in different amounts. It’s basically indigestible plant fibers that absorbs water and becomes a gel like consistency. It’s also used as a paste and in paper mache. It can be made from a variety of sources including wood, grasses, fibrous plants, etc.

@@ScottPropandRoll yep and I can see it seems a little tedious to check a weapon every time it changes hands, checking it after every take, making sure you’re going up before others in a dangerous area right after cut is called. But it’s the same way with live pyrotechnics, overhead rigging, dangerous mechanical rigs. If you are not extremely diligent you have no place in the job.
