For those of your SCREAMING why did you replace the Ohlins or not rebuild them, these are the reasons. 1. Rebuilding them would take weeks if not months these days, something we don't have time for. 2. Having ridden on Ohlins in the past, they are an amazing coilover for smooth roads like California but are pretty stiff and unforgiving on beat up roads (Robert lives in Ohio). They are also more track focused than street oriented. 3. The Fortune 500s are a much softer and composed coilover for the street, which this car will see most of its time on. We had the same suspension on our old Evo 8 and found them to be a great option for street use. Hope that helps most of you understand the choice made here.
Still definitely a bit disappointed, but having looked into how long it takes to get coilovers rebuilt before from most of the big names (ohlins, bilstien, etc) I definitely get the choice for a situation like this.
The wheel choice is more egregious than the dampers. Black is terrible to begin with and replacing the quality BBS with cheap Enkeis makes zero sense to me.
@@TML34 To be fair, the BBS's they had on it were EVO X takeoffs. Not to say they aren't "real" BBS's, but they're not exactly LM's or RG's either. Regarding black wheels, I'd generally agree; but you have to remember this is a series being done for some elses car who won the contest. I'm sure he was heavily consulted on what he wanted looks wise to the car.
Hey my car! I've also been in the EVO game for a long time. The guys have consulted me the whole way. I'm really excited about the build. All the take off stuff is coming home with me and I'll obviously continue to Evolve the car over time. I'm a huge EVO nerd and have a really solid understanding of the platform and what I'm after.
So I assume this means you'll run the entry level coilovers that Speed Academy was paid to put on your car, until the Ohlins are rebuilt, right? I get not looking a gift horse in the mouth, but how excited could you really be for a one way adjustable coilover and Enkei wheels?
Nice. Miss my old evo 8. Probably would have just got the ohlins rebuilt. They are phenomenal coilovers. I had a couple different coilovers on my car, and the ohlins were far and away the best. The tide was better than stock on the street...add a couple clicks for the track and they were amazing.
I’m sure they’ll return a lot of the parts they removed to him so that way he could always send the Ohlins out for a rebuild if he chooses to. The track pads up front for a street car seem like not the best idea especially in a cold environment like Canada where it could take a few minutes on the street just to properly warm them up. Not to mention the noise and likely higher amount brake dust.
The headlight polishing was such a dramatic change. Thanks to you guys I find myself looking at headlights to see which ones are yellowed and need some TLC.
The front splitter is an absolute must on the 8. It’s way too soft looking upfront. Splitter just adds enough aggression. Glad it was the first thing you guys put on!
Love the build! No issues here with coilover swap as long as you keep the cores to rebuild for someone else! I would have had a hard time swapping in new bumpy bits but not addressing control arm, sway bar bushings, etc. Maybe a low mileage car? At any rate, a fun series to do with your supporters!
Please guys, keep the black taillights!! And after you told that came from Ben Lin’s EVO, it’s another big reason to do this! You and Gears and Gasoline are my favourite channels on YT 🤩 Always good content with terrific video shots! Keep this good content always running here 🔥
Hats off to PT , unbelievable how those headlights ended up looking....better than new! So finally I know what the Evo was about, I thought it was going to be a donor car for the EvoWagon LOL
Great clip! Can’t wait to see part 2,3,4 etc. This clip came in handy as far as coil over talk/install. I own a 06 EVO IX, on tein s tech springs, I feel so “old school “ can’t wait to upgrade though! Lol
Guys i like the channel and I also enjoy car wash video. maybe a separate video for wash in the future I think that was a missed chance to see evo being washed. i dont know what it is but it is very satisfying to watch car wash videos.
Wow seeing those ohlins next to those FA’s it makes the FA’s look like racelands in terms of build quality. Lol You guys better not do him dirty and give them back so they can be rebuilt.
Ohlins aren't for everyone. I bought some JIC magic for $20 that are trash because they were street driven. Who knows, maybe these Ohlins are trashed too.
@@bgee461 hence why everyone is saying get them rebuilt. They can be custom valved and you can get different springs. I doubt they are so far gone they couldn’t be rebuilt and be better than the fortunes.
I saw shocked at how much easier it is to install wheel studs with that tool!! I used to think it was a waste of money until I tried it, and it's worth every penny.
Cool build, love the Evo 8, but I find it weird how you emphasise the owners desire to street this car year round, then remove EBC Yellowstuff and install Winmax W5. As you rightly say Winmax W5 is very noisy and having noisy brakes on the street is no fun, especially when YellowStuff is a great street pad and would be totally fine up to the sorts of temperatures seen on the street. I'm also surprised you didn't replace the discs as they were rusty as hell. And the calipers themselves were in poor condition, could benefit from a refurbishment, not just to fix up the paint but to also put some new rubber seals in there (but i understand why you couldn't do a caliper refurb if you were pressed on time). But the thing that really shocked me is how you didn't even bleed some fresh brake fluid through, that's essential to good brake performance and also takes 15 minutes if the cars already on the ramp.
This car will see plenty of HPD laps on Mid-Ohio and Rob is not afraid of a little job like swapping out pads. So the W5s are a nice track day upgrade.
SA Brothers... Get yourself some SEM panel bond to fill in those bumper holes. Black tail lights FTW! 💪 Maybe some black head light housings to match? The Storm Trooper Evo is looking good guys💪
Has a Evo 9 spoiler...should source a Evo 8 spoiler for that inner carbon fiber panels. Plus it's only right to have the correct spoiler on. I have a white Evo 9 myself so I love this build!
Definitely go with the Evo 9 mr taillights because they give an OEM plus vibe and looks amazing it's a no brainer because i would definitely go with those. Are you really competing in Gridlife Street class time attack like Ben Lin for real? Apparatus is very similar to Ben Lin from Gears and gasoline.
Sorry, I'm late to the party here. But please please get that man's Ohlins rebuilt! They could be revalved and have softer springs installed. They are a far superior product.
What is too close for a caliper? I have DC5 Brembos on my S2000 and there's probably less than 1mm clearance but it doesn't cause an issue. Stock DC2 calipers were also very close to the spokes on stock UK DC2 wheels
Removing an inverted ohlins monotube suspension with a DFV valve for a two-tube suspension I think is clearly a step backwards. If they are worn they can be repaired for much less than new suspensions cost
I like those wheels actually. I bet Evo 10 calipers and rotors swap would have negated the need for a spacer, or at the very least, you could have ran a smaller spacer with that combo and negated the need for extended studs. I also run the FA 500 with the swift springs. I have no complaints with them.
Wheels are such an easy thing to change around to ones taste, but I reckon those black Enkei's look amazing ! Tail lights also give a more up to date look to suit the lip, wheel 'black' scheme. Also, if he experiences any brake squeal, be sure to try throwing the OEM Brembo 'half shims' back onto the back of the brake pads (noting they are also directional, marked with arrows).
those wheels are the perfect size and offset on a CT9A, anyone running lower offsets rubs on the rear or runs skinny tires, nothing wrong with extended studs and spacers (slip on, hubcentric only)
@@y2khatsko This was a few weeks ago and I can't rewatch the video right now, but 9.5 +38 with 255 or 265 width 35 profile tires is the most you can fit comfortably before you have to start cutting, bending, buying custom parts and running into issues. I wish I stopped there, instead I'm now running 10.5 +38s with 285/30s, but it took a lot of work to get here and I'm not sure that it's worth it.

Evo 7 Taillights hands down. I may be biased though since I have Evo 7 tails on mine 😁.

I would send the dampers back to Ohlins for a rebuild. They are some of the highest quality suspension parts on the market.
Such a nice car. I would go with the red taillights, they pop really nice with the white color, but I like the blacked out ones, too. :)
