Preston & Jackie Hill Perry: Are Headship and Submission Issues of Competence or Calling?

    In Ephesians 5, we read that wives are to submit to their husbands and that husbands are to be the head of their wives, but what does that actually look like? If a man is naturally timid, is he qualified to be the leader in his home? Or if a woman is smarter and wiser than her husband, should she be relegated to the position of a helper instead of the head?
    Preston and Jackie Hill Perry answer these questions and more in their workshop at Legacy Chicago 2017. Listen here or on the Legacy Disciple app.

    I was taught something incredible today not through words but through action.
    He stuttered a few times, lost his place a few times, and maybe even his train of thought, but when it was her turn to go... she says good job sweetie.... she is an eloquent speaker and gets her point across and then some. My husband is a little slow when he communicates and he repeats himself several times.. point is he and I are so different. Sometimes I lose my patience. Praise God the Almighty that He is changing me every day and He really has put His spirit in me to where now my patience for my Husband is much greater. I’m appreciating our differences. This was a great example of how I should respond to my husband.

      Wow. Thank you so much for sharing that. I need to work on that when relating to my kids and especially my son. Men communicate and think differently than women and I need to give him the same respect and patience I want from others. I see I need to work on some things to be ready for a good relationship if God sees fit to grant it down the road.

      Michelle Staunton and sister Angelique, I have a question. I have only been saved for 7 years, most of my life not knowing Christ. I understand that women cannot be senior pastors of a church as they are not meant to lead in that way. But if a woman has a conversation with a man, maybe in crisis or having trouble, and he is not saved is she then able to teach him about what Jesus did for us that we may be free and have everlasting life? Can she share the Good News of the Gospel? Or maybe if the woman is on mission in another country. The same question. Can she speak to a group of people who are of another faith or faithless, and share the teachings of Jesus with them? This is something I have been curious about and get differing opinions on. I am truly asking not as an argument, but to learn and understand.

    This was both triggering and healing. I've never heard anyone talk about Eve in such an honorable and beautiful way. Usually, she's credited for the eff-up of mankind and that's all we ever hear of the first Woman to ever exist and this has affected greatly my ability to love and connect with my own womanhood. I appreciate that they both made it a point to speak highly of her. The Woman is not a less adequate version of the man. She was/is just as equal, just as glorious, just as worthy of honor and existence. I appreciate them for their careful and godly approach to the story of the Woman.
    However, as a young Black woman who has never had meaningful or pleasurable relationships with men (being fatherless, being used sexually in the past, etc. but never really knowing, loving or being loved by a man), this was painful. I want to learn to trust men. I want to believe that the help of a man is in the perfect and loving will of Yah for my life. It hurts to have to accept that there is a world of loving men who pursue the heart of Yah that I've just never crossed paths with. Yahweh, My Greatest Love, please show me how to trust men and see myself as someone worth honoring, loving and leading. amen.

      I can relate to that. For so many years I was one of those women that Preston talked about at the beginning, the kind of overzealous feminists that are low key kind of scary, but since coming back to God He is helping me to grow and begin to see how he created me. He is also helping me to learn to trust men again. All my life I couldn’t even allow myself to feel attracted towards men but now I’ve begun to care for someone and while I’m not sure if it is God’s plan, I know that it is evidence of his healing power and grace. I understand the concern but I’m tired of seeing this as a first line of defense instead acknowledging that abusive men and controlling men can be avoided and that there are healthy brothers out there. You have to be attracted to that. Because I’ve seen a lot of broken women say that but we’re afraid of stability and peace. Christ already kept the law for us so once we believe in Christ we are declared righteous. Christ FULFILLED the law for us because you can’t perfectly follow the law in your own power. You can sin in your mind and heart so you will always fail but the glory about Christ is that he was without sin and could do it for us. @@peterwilson4321how did you get sin & submission mixed up? That wasn’t logical.
      You can submit to sin & be in disobedience to God. Just because you don’t do what your wife wants in her disobedience doesn’t mean you don’t love her. It makes you a leader actually.
      If anything that’s a simp. The complete opposite of a leader & that’s how men get ran over by their wives & they don’t get respected. See how your disobedience comes with consequences for you if you’re a man?
      God bless you I pray Jesus gives you understanding on this 💯🙏🏽 Jesus didn’t submit to his disciples wants he stood on business but he was also very loving & humble. That’s what women want in a man. We’re looking for Jesus’s character in them 🫶🏽

      All That Is Good
      The bible says the serpent talked to Eve. Everyone is assuming that Adam was there at the moment and they knew the serpent was the devil.
      I liked this presentation but they're assuming a few things in the Adam & Eve story that the bible doesn't say. They may have legitimate points but basically when many Christians tell the story they have Adam & Eve committing so many sins even before they eat the forbidden fruit and the bible just doesn't say that.

    • @tisha7252
      @tisha7252 6 років тому +2

      Oh Brother I was actually thinking that not too long ago... So, I’ll say to you that I don’t disagree with you @ all. But, I do believe one of a husbands duties to his wife is to make sure she is informed/knowledgeable. Hard to mislead... Mostly due to her seeking his counsel before she makes tough decisions. Nowadays when a woman is deceived by the Devil, let’s say for example to step out of her marriage for any reason... It’s usually because the husband is more consumed in something else more than he is in her. In Adam’s case it was God’s Work. Which I’m sure happens to many men married to Christian women who admire the Church and Pastor more than they do their husbands. Then... They slip in an affair from lack of attention. The way they depict the story is as if he was there... The way the Bible depicts it is as he was off somewhere most likely working. I’ve been reading the Pseudepigrapha just for fun - the full story of Adam & Eve and it depicts there being many events when Eve was deceived and a couple of them both. I guess... We’ll never know. One thing I do admire about the two... Regardless of who did what or let whatever happen, they stuck together. That’s love... Unconditional... Adam could’ve been REALLY mad at Eve... Her action took them out the Kingdom. But... It was all for good reason in the end.

    • @TracyTodd2199
      @TracyTodd2199 6 років тому +5

      What about the Bible stating that woman is the weaker vessel? The devil knew this apparently. Adam was FIRST...then EVE. There's the order and then the woman being the weaker vessel made her the best target.
      Something to consider....were Adam and Eve even aware that they had an enemy to contend with yet? Satan used the creature...the serpent...to talk to Eve. Soooo....were they aware yet? Or did Eve just think she was speaking with a creature?
      Why do you suppose Adam just stood there and allowed Eve to sin? What was Adams mind set?

    • @TracyTodd2199
      @TracyTodd2199 6 років тому +10

      All That Is Good
      Wasn't it ultimately ADAM'S sin that took THEM out of paradise? Adam was the head of the unit there. Say if Adam would have refused to eat the fruit and there by not sin...WHAT would have been the outcome? Would Eve been the only one killed off? Would Adam gotten another chance? Eve did not get an excuse and neither did Adam. They both got consequences.

      Brooke Zaldi I think if we look at honoring our husbands as honoring God our perspective changes. Asking and learning how our husbands feel loved or honored, and then applying it every day. I learned my husband feels loved when I feed him. Lol. So I make him breakfast every morning and feed him dinner every night. That way he starts and ends the day feeling loved/honored. Keeping 1 corinthians 13:4 in mind. Also studying proverbs 31 and what it really means.
      It can be difficult to honor our husbands when they aren’t walking with God or leading us spiritually, but honoring God is not difficult. Let Your affection be towards God first.

    I believe it's where you are in your walk with the Lord. Weather Man or Women, through the wondrous works of Holy Spirit, he will help you to establish your proper position in a marriage, sometimes, even reluctantly if you can just hold on. At 9:40 Preston says he posted something to social media intended for the brothers in his hometown who were feeling inadequate in their marriages, but the post went viral when people outside of the intended message took it out of context; the wrong way. This makes me think of the Epistles of Paul, written for specific reasons to specific people. I wonder this: Might it be possible that this is a pretty strong parallel to the way believers can read the same words in the Bible but interpret it entirely differently? We sling terms like, "Sister, you are being deceived" and "Brother, you are following a false prophet," but is our God Most High - the Creator of all things - capable of meaning different things to different believers at different points in their journey? Like the story of the blind men and the elephant - the one at the trunk says, "This creature has a big nose," while the one at the end says, "This creature has a droopy tail." Still the same creature, but the men are at different spots in their discovery of the whole. Even in trying to put the entire Bible into context as God's Truth, we will continue to debate that Truth. Even in the name of Jesus.
    Deep thoughts...

      Wow yes!! This is something that has been on my mind recently. I would condemn other believers for being ‘lukewarm’ when I had JUST been delivered from being lukewarm myself. God revealed to me that I was still connected to the world, still scared of losing self and I had not fully devoted to Him. On the other end, I condemned myself for not being like mature Christians, trying to rush God in the process to mature me when I know I am not ready lol. I believe once you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior then you are on that walk with Him and it begins there. So we shouldn’t condemn those who are at the beginning but lovingly guide them. That’s why prayer and reading the Bible is so important, or else we will not mature in faith and relationship with God

    Thank you for this! I am a big believer of the headship and authority of the husband over the wife. But this doesn't mean "better than". It's simply a matter of role distinction between the male and female in the relationship! This is from someone who identifies as a strong woman of God! Yet I yield myself under the authority of my husband who is a good example of the patience and character of Christ! PTL!
