  • Music may not sound like the sort of arena where you need mental toughness training. But actually, it's at the heart of how you can play consistently at your best. And mental toughness is probably quite different from what you think.
It's not about being rigid. It's not about fighting hard and exerting maximum effort. Rather, it's about managing your thoughts, feelings and emotions so that they work for you - rather than letting them control you and the music you play. And it allows you to build the self-belief and confidence that underpins great inspiring performances - as well as rapid progress in the practice room.
But you can't just to decide to be mentally tough when you need it - at a big performance, for example. You need to have done the work in advance to lay the foundations so that your mental strength is already there and waiting when you need to call on it.

Great presentation. It's also good to utilise the power of the subconscious mind as well.

Glad you liked it, Steve. And you're so right about using the subconscious mind. What's your favourite way to tap into that?

The subconcious mind does not even exist. It is a made up concept.Tapping into does squat.I did over a thousand hours of hypnotherapy, and it didnt do a damn thing.

How does one decide what one's best is when one isn't fully trained? I would presume that every practice session reflects my best for any given day even if it's full of mistakes.

The two main things I ask myself are: am I giving it my full effort? And am I managing to maintain strong concentration? If I'm doing both then I'm probably doing my best for that given day. Whether there are things to work on that will dramatically raise the level I'm capable of is another question...
