- RetroBlasting teams up with Star Wars at Dragon*Con track once again to deliver a presentation about the history of the lightsaber within the Star Wars saga. We're going across the galaxy to shed light on lightsabers in this Dragon*Con 2017 panel!
#RetroBlasting #Lightsabers
"We hope that we'll see that story (of how Anakin's lightsaber is back) unfold in The Last Jedi"
This line is hilariously sad in retrospect.
it is 2020 and we still are not told how Luke's original lightsaber ends up in the basement of a bar.
An ugnaught found it and sold it.
It was a mysterious technique known as bad writing.
I'll tell you.
Another time.
"Mystery box"...
It never happened. If you remember it, you could be a variant from another timeline.
So funny back when we thought The Last Jedi would actually answer questions and be concerned with decent storytelling
I never knew Sir Alec coined the phrase “Lightsaber” very cool!
Much better than the lame name Lucas gave it. "Laser Sword". lol
"You might get purple"...
46 mins of lightsaber talk... and I still want more!
After hearing Samuel Jackson talk about this moment in interviews, it's nice to finally see it. I didn't know it was filmed.
filming the prequels must of been a blast...knowing the hype of the series...in the modern computer t.v. media age...lucas was in such a good mood he actually listened to actor input lol unlike with the original films where he ignored all of it
I have read that Samuel tries to incorporate purple into every one of his characters....
I love how he can intimidate Lucas so easily.
14:10 Hey man, you're using Adywan's Special Edition of ESB! Good choice! :)
I really like to have one for christmas...regardless of the term "light sabre" or "laser sword".
I've read multiple times the grips for the original Graflex were windshield wipers from the 70s....I also read another take on the lightsaber training scene and it shows actual props in 3 pieces of the bar and that Luke DID in fact cut it, but Yoda quips that a fully-trained Jedi could cut it into 7. Definitely a cool scene that helps to de-mystify how Luke was able to become more proficient in swordsmanship.
Absolutely phenomenal job, M&M!!
I've heard another reason Luke's saber in Return(Revenge) of the Jedi became green was because the scene showing him crafting the new lightsaber was deleted, so the thinking (according to this theory) was that by giving the blade a different color the audience would instantly know it was a new weapon. Have you ever heard this theory?
Also, Ben Burtt confirmed that in the screenplay he was given for Star Wars, the weapon was only referred to as a "laser sword," so I'm inclined to believe the Sir Alec naming theory.
I’m glad I’m not the only one obsessed with Lightsabers
I bet in return they never thought the green lightsaber would forever make fans crazy so much so we get purple and yellow and other colors too...I always liked the blue red green trio since it represented the three films so well...blue red green ...luke goes from obi wan to yoda as a mentor so he should go from blue to green
In the Dark Horse comics set well before the movies they had lightsabers that were powered by an external power source on their belt, which I thought was a nice backwards concept. I was disappointed, canon or not, that you didn't mention the Kaiber Saber from Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures. It's a saber made out of Kaiber Crystals and had the power to cut a moon in half. And only a hyperactive 12 year old could find it! Sleep well, people! :D
Actually Ki Adi Mundi or cone head according to the Star Wars behind the magic computer companion CD ROM disc for The Phantom Menace. Has a ? who has a purple light saber blade the answer was Ki Adi Mundi.
The Clone Wars episodes dealing with the padawans and their lightsabers are some of the best of the whole show. They deal heavy in jedi mythology and are the closest thing to the mythical lightsaber feeling we had in the 80's.
In the ice cavern the padawans not only have to pick up the crystals but the y have to confront their inner fears to get them.
They did it better way earlier in a comic where Anakin builds his first lightsaber. He fights a taunting vision of Darth Maul and isn't actually put in danger (hypothermia risk not withstanding). Seriously, TCW jedi would've been eliminated by CPS, forget the Empire. Plus, using Anakin as the protagonist makes it relevant to the overall plot.
Kanan was the one that used Ezra's lighsaber to it's full potential vs the Grand Inquisitor shooting at him while also swinging it blowing Ezra's mind.
I was wondering if discussion of lightsabers would hold my attention for an hour... and damn, it was actually enthralling af.
Air Traffic Controllers are not the people with the batons, we're the people in the tower making sure your aircraft doesn't hit another one.
Cool Bespin shirt Mike. Ace video as always.
Great work as always guy. I love it when you do your Star Wars Panels. I was surprised that you did not bring up the fact that General Grevious in ROTS had a few lightsabers in his coat that were actually identical to Anakin's and Obi Wan's lightsabers, even after they got theirs back. In the end when he fights Obi-Wan and has his multiple limbs cut off, the sabers that are falling were that of the Jedi mentioned. I know it is probably a 3d animators gaff, but within canon it makes no sense.
gutz1981 yes, the lightsabers that were in general grievouses hands and cut off limbs were the fallen dead jedi that the hilts belonged to. And grievous over the clone wars killed and hunted and slaughtered many laser masters of the force during the clone wars and even before or middle beginning of the war started. He did carry so much artillery which were hilts of dead jedi. But the question is...how many pockets or storage units did he have on his mechanical machine droid like body? And how was he able to carry so many hilts from jedi he killed with him? That is the question.
It always seemed to me, the first appearance of the star wars light sabre was impressive for the audience and a difficulty for production.
Then it seems like "hey, we got the light sabre to work. After you guys do the effects, its gonna be great." Then each movie they really run with the light sabre. Lights, waving them around, throwing them around...
Awesome video Michael!
Hey Michael. I would add to your opening statement that not only is the lightsaber the most distinct visual in the Star Wars Saga, but one of the most recognized weapons in the entire Space Opera genre of science fiction.
+DestructZero very very true
Wow.....I never noticed the at at crushing the chicken walker before. AWESOME.
Timothy Ward aaawww....thought it wasn't from the original... (whatever that is!)
I really like how you ended it. Good job as always!
+Chris Brewer thanks Chris!
32:00 Dark Forces II featured Dark Jedi with yellow blades (Yun, for example) and other colours could be chosen in the multiplayer.
I was wondering how you'd fill the time, but was confident you could, having seen your other panels. This was a really good time. Very well presented, but I think you do a wonderful job on panels in general, so this was no surprise. Excellent work.
Badass panel!!! Great job
Miss the lightsaber toys from Revenge of the Sith.
They were big, tough, and electronic.
Man I had that Force Effects lightsaber!
I very knowledgeable conversation about lightsabers, I enjoyed it a lot! I wish you had gone the full hour talking about Dooku's weapon, and the Fandom custom made after-market lightsabers of today, and mayeb touch upon some of the non-sense in printed sources, but still, you seem to know your way around the elegant weapon from a civilzed age well. I wish I had been in that panel to enjoy it live, and shake your hand.
Expanded Universe was canon already in the early 90s, and continued to be so until disney (SW R.I.P, 1977-2012). Its just that george has gone back n forth on it so many times people think it never was canon.
My favourite Lightsabers are Luke Skywalker's first lightsaber and Ahsoka's white Lightsabers. They both look really cool and I'm looking to build my own lightsaber so I'll keep those Lightsabers in mind. Also I just watched the Force Awakens so thanks
We need an episode of Melinda in the gold bikini!
I remember(cause I'm old) that in the original Star Wars comic book series through Marvel, the issue right before the Empire Strikes Back, was a story that involved Luke and Leia escaping from the Imperials, and somehow managed to get on this really odd ship that very much had a lot of "organic" properties to it (when you're 7 the shi*t was REALLY odd) anyway, Luke and Leia get separated...Luke winds up in a room with a droid that wielded a lightsaber, got into it with Luke, and Luke won. Because of that, the ship kinda lost it's sh*t saying however it was impossible as "the droid was programmed to WIN"...It was a cool little story. #38 "Riders In the Void"
Now knowing what we all know now, has a DROID ever wielded a lightsaber? I'm assuming this was the FIRST time, but were there any more AFTER it? And with how everything that kinda relates to Star Wars canon, would this story fit? Meaning a droid being involved possession of a lightsaber. And I'm really sorry this is so long, like I said, I never really thought about it until I got older, which is kinda funny I guess. lol. Anyway, AWESOME VIDEO as ALWAYS! Thanks again for sharing! #youfolksrule 😀👍
Karl E Paul in the extended universes canon, now called Legends canon, Darth Vader had a group of fencing droids that were fitted with lightsabers rather than their original metal blades. These droids were programmed to help him keep physically fit and in good fighting shape.
In Scottish Rite Freemasonic passion plays from at least the late 19th century or early 20th century, they used props which were essentially electrified swords that had a cord running into the handle that was plugged into an outlet on the floor. Some Masonic bodies still use these props today.
terrific presentation! highly entertaining - and I had no IDEA that lightsabers had such a complex series of back stories
I always guessed that the blood around Walrusman's arm was to make sure that the audience would be aware of what exactly had happened. Which is also probably why they used a furry, human hand instead of the "paddle hands" that Walrusman had in the previous shots. If a 1977 audience had seen all of the commotion and flashes of light, then had the camera cut to a coat sleeve with a giant, round paddle sticking out of it, then it's possible that it wouldn't have read as a severed arm and everyone would have just been confused.
Or it could have been just fine, though, since audiences are generally more observant than filmmakers like to give them credit for.
Darth probably had a safe and is so important that an officer was probably charged with evacuating it prior to the death stars destruction. Therefore Obi wans sabre might have been in it.
it may have been just a mistake or necessary due to circumstance, but eight year old me was blown away by the fact that we saw a green bladed lightsaber. this like all your panels over the years have been so much fun to watch, thank you.
heres a question for you...in Yodas hut you see glowing crytals he uses as lighting...do you think that is kyber crystals?
I really love what you guys do! This was just an awesome watch. :)
The last jedi just threw the importance of the skywalker lightsaber over the shoulder of the fans.....so sad
Lightsabers are just a tool, anybody can use one...the Jedi and Sith just happen to be ones who prefer it as a weapon.
Awesome post! Absolutely agree: the lightsaber is totally an iconic element of a fantastic series of films. Loved watching this video, many thanks for sharing!
i know the old expanded universe is redconned but i onces read that luke actually comes back to yodas hut and there he finds a method to artificially porduce kyber crystalls, almost the same way some sith forge their own to avoid crystal impurities, so then he proceeds to forge the green crystal (never really knew why it was green, some side is a side effect form beeing synth rather than natural) in an oven like machine and that as a symbol he is now a jedi master he proceeds to assalbme his lightsaber, i alwyas thought this piece of history was awesome.
Another excellent panel you guys. I love all things lightsabers and thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Thank you again for the wonderful content! ^>^
I always thought it would be cool if the crystal focused force powers, and non force users would be unable to produce a blade, kind of a weapon that would be useless to those not strong with the force
Just amazing work. This is why you guys are the best retro channel on the interwebs
I think it was more the thermal detonator that killed the AT AT more than the lightsaber.
I didn't even see the cords hidden in the sleeves. Cool presentation. Too bad I wasn't there in person.
Loved the video. very informative keep it up Retroblasting
You have a wonderful British accent.
16:57 No one notice that the official Revenge poster has Luke with a Red lightsaber and Darth with a Blue one?
Interesting that vader had a blue light saber on the revenge poster....
There is a scene in Rebels where the light saber retracts so fire the gun, then extends again all in one fluid motion.
Well Done. Well done It was NEVER BORING.
But can I ask. How does Luke's lightsaber get to the box in FORCE AWAKENS. I've watched it many times and just can't work it out.
I know shame on me.
One of the early, new cannon novels expands on it somehow.
Ah the ignorance and bliss before the dumpster fire that was TLJ came out 2 months later and divided a lot of us Star Wars fans... Still, this was an Excellent and VERY informative video non the less!!! I truly wish I had been at that convention. Thank you for this video!!!
@@timothyward8695 Fair enough. I haven’t watched ALL his videos regarding the sequels. I admit I enjoyed The Force Awakens for what it was when I saw it new (& I know it’s a rehash of the format for A New Hope). It’s the only sequel I own on DVD before TLJ and all the fan lashing round headed Johnson did. I only saw that movie ONCE and left the theatre feeling “meh” instead of “yeah!”. I didn’t know how much so many agreed with that until the backlash of 2018.
Luke’s lightsaber was always going to be a different colour in Revenge of the Jedi. This was discussed and agreed pre production meeting of 1981 between Lucas, Kasdan and also Marquand. The green was decided later yes but the intention was always to have Luke with a new ‘Lazer Sword’ and new colour to show that he was his own man!
Then why was it blue in the Revenge trailer?
That was such a great video, I honestly didn't want it to end. PS Micheal your puns were great
42:00 they are both novices for the first time???? Obviously raising office is there any evidence to support that kylo was a novice???????
rey is a novice ^ not raising office
Kylo was whipped by a novice. Hence, he's a novice by default.
+RetroBlasting could you possibly elaborate on that? I looked it up online and it also says that he was trained by Luke Skywalker now I don't know if that involved using a lightsaber but at least he has had some training by a Jedi master in some way. He's also one of the heads of the first order and an apprentice to snoke yet he is just a novice?
+Timothy Ward So he has had training from Luke Skywalker, used to be the leader of the Knights of Ren, is one of the heads the first order, and is now Snokes Apprentice. All of that but he's still no better than a person who has had a lightsaber for like what 24-48 hours? Call him what you want, regardless Rey and Kylo weren't equals in regards to the skill of a lightsaber. If he has had all that and is still no better than a person that has had it for such a short amount of time than what a worthless villain he is.
We sabersmiths make the best sabers
You go to korbanth, KR SABERS Solos hold etc and plecter labs we use unbreakable neopixle blades top of the line
Timothy Ward just search the web
Ulysses 31 had a gun/light saber.
Wonderful! Absolutely wonderful!
With all this lightsaber confusion one might be tempted to just do it Solo-style with just a good blaster and some explosives...
I don't know about that, with all the hatred for the Han Solo movie, we might start to see the haters love Jedi again. Let's not forget that after the prequels, the haters started hating on Jedi. Let's not forget that before the prequels, everyone wanted to see more Jedi. And let's never forget: haters gonna hate.
Or you could say Laswords or Lisabers.
I'm loving all these Dragon Con presentations-- thanks for sharing.
Lol, Alec Guinness apparently hated Star Wars.
I think he hated that it became the movie he was known for and had to deal with overeager fans when he made so many more movies he was personally proud of.
I could talk about Star Wars all day, in fact I have had days like that.
Loved this panel! Awesome stuff !!!
Great Video Mike and Melinda!
Fantastic! Well done guys! I learn so much every time you do these presentations.
Love your presentation.
I can't wait for Mark to do crazy stuff in TLJ. It's gonna be SICK!
Griffin Langhans
The disappointment brother...
Boooo to the darksaber.
Great panel as always. very enjoyable
This was very entertaining. A lot of work went into this. Cheers!
When I see that montage of lightsabre usage, it reinforces my conviction that Star Wars should be subtitled "A Farewell to Arms."
And no…. the reason why they gave Luke a ‘new’ saber essentially was because of the fact that they lost all of the MPP/Heiland hilts for Vader between ESB & ROTJ production. So they took the Graflexes that they were using, & made them hilts that look what Vader had carried. Usually referred to as the ‘Vader Stunt”. And literally recycled Ben’s old stunt saber as Luke’s new saber. Which is pretty cool I think!
That was awesome! Just a pity you didn't really address the lazy "clan sabers" that were props for the Jedi masters in TPM and were then just given to any random Jedi in AOTC and ROTS with only very little alterations, not to mention Grievous even using main protagonists sabers with differently coloured blades.
Finally I'd be curious of your opinion on Rey's own (yellow!) lightsaber practically coming full circle as being constructed from her staff which in turn was veeeeery reminiscent of the Maul saber (resp. Windu 0.5).
@RetroBlasting, I'm from the future, and unfortunately your wish from 41:02 won't become true. Actually, star wars will be all over the place... in pieces. I hope you see my post before watching the movie... 🙄😁
God damnit I loved my Force Beam from 1979. That will always be MY THE lightsaber. Not the Kenner ones.
Another excellent panel! I feel almost like a student listening to a cool professor teach on an interesting subject! Your panels are fun & informative- very complete. Also, you can tell you really care about a lot of your subjects. 2 questions: would you consider the lightsaber gauntlet (Kit Fisto) an accessory or a variation? Also, tho I don't know if it's cannon still, but what about the Dark Lady Lumiya with her whip like one? I know Marvel comics ran the gauntlet from goofy to great.
excellent
The cantina fight with Ben and Ponda Baba has been theorized before. Ponda Baba has a different anatomical structure than humanoid types. His circulatory system is more like spiders and insects. Arthropods' primary internal cavity is a hemocoel, which accommodates their internal organs, and through which their blood circulates. They have open circulatory systems. This means that the blood doesn't flow through vessels, but is collected in a much larger body cavity; the hemocoel. Basically, Ponda Baba is like a walking can of blood. A light saber cut may severe a limb, but the hemocoel is too large to cauterize. Small blood vessels might be closed by burning the surrounding tissue, but not a big blood cavity.
To add credit to this theory, Wookieepedia mentions that Ponda Baba is Aqualish an arachnid alien. Gives credence to the spider/insect theory.
PS- Was that a "fan special" clip of Empire? Hmmm...
Not only one of my favorite RB videos, but one of my favorite segments on all of UA-cam.
I was surprised you didn't mention Marvel Comics early Lightsaber confusion--in the early issues of Star Wars, they were all red! Even for for significant period of time after the movie. Obi Wan and Darth fought with two red sabers, and Lule's saber was red as well. Reprints would make the correction to blue.
My guess is it was either related to the early decision to have them all white (which wouldn't look good in print) or a color problem similar to the original Hulk comics where the color they wanted wouldn't work. Red usually works better in print (which is why so many female comic books characters have red hair - far more so than the general population.)
It's interesting how, for the original series, they just grabbed a prop from a previous film, dressed it up some to differentiate it, and just gave it to whoever needed to wield one. Then again, only 3 people wielded them across the original trilogy. So, not much need for variation, especially when Luke is making a lightsaber based on the bits and pieces laying around Obi-Wan's hut.
I just happened upon this video ...fantastic well presented....also I thought to myself the reasoning for why the designs were so sleek in the prequels vs the original Trilogy is ...if I remember correctly the Emperor made owning a lightsaber a crime, as well as forbidding the trade of the crystals needed to make lightsabers across the galaxy no matter what planet they grew on.....that being said I figured you could use that logic that since they were illegal to possess or build they had to be pieced together from found components without arousing suspicion vs the days of the republic where the Jedi had access to the finest materials if that makes sense...hence their cobbled together used look after the prequels...
I like the theory about needing tougher lightsabres for fighting in wars. Maybe it was something as simple as the metal casing needing to be tougher, or maybe the beam intensity needed to be stronger to slash at vehicles or deflect so many blaster bolts. I think what confused me was the Clone Wars episodes that told us the kyber crystal was unique to each person and the building of the saber was special, but I guess that's just for your first lightsaber when you're a youngling. As an adult there's nothing to stop them taking a crystal out and totally rebuilding the handle.
Can someone explain why most lightsabers have such terrible ergonomics? They look so uncomfortable to hold.
Kylo is not a novice. He was trained until he was like 18/22 whatever. Rey has never used a sword as far as we know.
Kyle Hill of Beyond Science gave a more plausible explanation on the infamous Cantina scene. The wounds get cauterized easily for humans because of the size of the veins. The alien who got his arm cut off either has large veins, or their species employ a different blood circulation system.
great work guys and Mike I gotta tell you my nephew who's 10 got a s-load of build your own sabers for his birthday 2 years ago and he flipped. Now one question have you have seen the tachyon baton style designed and what do you think of it?
And Disney was so incompetent they never explained how the lightsaber was found. Three movies, and they couldn't be bothered to do it.
Didn't Lucas say the various books and comics were canon back during the OT era?
You can find Kenobi’s lightsaber in a West End Games Star Wars rpg module. Not that that’s cannon or anything lol
Awesome vid man!!!! Glad there are other people who care so much about certain props and scrutinize them to death! Thank you!
I always assumed that "Walrusman" was just a creature who had alien blood that didn't clot like other creatures, which is why he bled when Kenobi took him down.
Another awesome and informative video- outstanding as always !
A job well done sir.
Uylsses 31 was cartoon in the 80's where the main character had a blaster that had a sabre option.
He also had a shield gizmo on his other arm.
I know this is random, but can you make a Kenner a wing review and/or restoration? I don't know a lot about it.
Awesome, great thorough fanservice video.
Sitting here, grinning from one ear to the other.... :DDD As informative as funny!
