Magnificent show. Thank you for the performances at City Center! Wonderful. Haunting, beautiful and moving. The original cast album is available for streaming on Spotify. (Apparently out of print, the CD's are expensive on Amazon.). Highly recommended.
Saw the original at the then Plymouth Theater. It was a mix of professionals and amateurs. It had a raw gutsy edge and was thrilling. Too bad City Center didn't try do the same. At this point, Runaways is also a period piece and does not need to be re-invented or updated. Don't mess with a good thing. RIP Elizabeth Swados.
Too clean and professional. Teenagers of privilege act as if they live suffering lives. The original was so raw, not filled with privileged upper middle class kids like this cast.
Theatre audiences have different expectations now than back when the show originally premiered. A lot of people expect actors in gritty shows like this to sound raw and real, but not too raw and real because the show needs to sound "nice" to get people to see it.
@@lovelylexi2076 I doubt the expectations are different now. The mixing of amateurs and professionals in the original is precisely whey the original iteration was novel and worked. And NO, it didn't sound too "raw", because it was raw. Furthermore, Swado's music was never intended to sound "nice". Rather, it was designed to sound real, which the original production was. Audiences deserve better than this fake faximile.

Is this the show about kids wining their ass off?
No it's not. It just comes across that way in this production. The original was very different.
