  • Ice experts are warning people to be extra cautious around frozen rivers and waterways, as a warmer winter has left many bodies of water with unstable, weak ice. Danny Peled, an instructor with Boreal River Rescue, shares tips on how to rescue yourself - or someone else - after falling through ice.

Thank you so much for this!
My house backs onto a new built stormwater retention pond and I have been watching people “test “ the ice by throwing rocks at it, and even watched a few people venture onto the ice, despite the posted warning signs about thin ice. I am very concerned that someone’s going to fall through. As a result last week we bought a 50 foot rope and will be storing it in a small dry bag with a couple of emergency blankets just in case someone falls in and needs to be rescued.
It’s been a couple of decades since I took any lifeguarding classes/learned about ice rescues so this is a good reminder.

First, experiment in summer by wearing winter clothes & boots & jump in a swimming pool.
The weight of wet clothes will pull you down instantly.
Once, I had to immediately jump in the deep end of a pool to save my 2 years old daughter from drowning while I was wearing a towel gown over swimming trunks. The weight of the wet gown dragged me down. Luckily the pool was only 7 feet deep so I walked under water to the edge, put my daughter on dry ground and then climbed the metal ladder to get out.
      Please advise what to do?

LOL. you beat me to the comment. they need to show to do it WITHOUT ice picks or other tools. They have a Dry Suit and insulated clothing on, so they should be able to perform the self rescue without tools. In a pinch, if you have car keys in pocket that might help (better then nothing at all).

Showing self rescue with the hand spikes and not explaining to carry them is bad. You need to float your legs with body if you cannot and look for exposed shore further down water body.

I fell through the ice two days ago. I surprisingly didn't feel cold until I got out -- I think because of the adrenaline. It was -30c and I was really scared of drowning there or dying from hypothermia due to being wet. Everything was freezing immediately and restricting my movement. I thought the ice was thick but it broke and then I immediately fell into the mud and had troubles getting out. The water level was about a foot below the ice that broke free. I think the ice accumulated when the water level was higher then it fell which left about a 4 inch thick chunk of ice that just had air below it then water underneath that air gap. I'm glad I took off my boots as soon as I could since the laces were already frozen but I was able to pull them off the hooks.

Lots of winter activities take you out in ice. If a person avoided every risk in their life you can't really live.
The first step is ensure iceis safe before going out, and monitor changes in ice structure (white vs blue), ice thickness, recent weather, etc.
You comment as someone who doesn't know, and most don't, but people should educate themselves on how to enjoy frozen waterways. Same as learning to drive a car before you plan a road trip.

The best advice for me was to always roll away after getting out of the water, because I’m sure my first instinct would be to stand up. Also, putting your legs behind you in the water instead of below you is something I would not have thought of. Thanks!

It’s best to prep by taking a class or doing it on your own with others with a rope tied to fall in intentionally so that the environment is first nature not surprise. That way when you fall in it’s like home you’re not panicking and your now the polar bear kinda thing. That’s how consciousness learns from its surroundings by making home. After all, what you are doing on the ice when you don’t know it you have no business being there.
