Realy cool!!! Jan & Liam (i meet him on the smashing conf in freiburg, such a nice person) For me would be realy interesting: 1) where to start 2) Good resources (youtube, blog, shopify documentation -> tutorials) 3) how to combine html, css, javascript and liquid 4) deploy a very basic theme to the store to see the process

How many styles should a theme have for submission? I see most of the themes on the store have 3 styles. I'm currently building a theme with two styles for submission. Would that count against me?

@@CodingWithJan honestly? My creative flow has been the most problematic. I'm having trouble deciding which features I would like to include, and keep getting hung up on what I would like to include vs what will just make ot seem too bloated

Getting your theme listed in the official Shopify theme store is quite elusive but getting your store listed on other theme marketplaces seems more attainable. Either way this series sounds interesting. I'd be happy to build a theme and have it on any marketplace. What are your thoughts about developing themes to put on other Shopify theme marketplaces?
Here's someone who is realistic. I see many deluded people thinking they will create a theme and just submit and get approval. It doesn't work like that.

Having your theme listed on market place is definitely a challenge but it's possible if you respect the requirements of Shopify.

Hi Linda,
if you're talking about autoplay on page load, that really depends on the browser policy these days. Most only allow autoplay if the video is muted. Beyond that you could try to embed a youtube or vimeo video instead. Just putting out some ideas here. :-)

@@CodingWithJan Okay, so you are willing to answer questions, that's great, I hope if you can go with a bit more advanced topics like how to add (add to cart) button on the collection page or on a new section on the homepage, or a new section on (page.liquid) -- the ability to make a working (add to cart) button on any section

I think in this series we're more going into where to start, what tools to use, how to submit a theme, where to get resources or help, and everything around that.

@@CodingWithJan another topic: understanding the slider on the product page and what's the javascript connected to it, I feel like this slider is too complicated and if I removed any bit of code from it, it doesn't work and I don't know why or how it's connected to javascript by which classes or by which data-attributes

in wordpress I used to build the template ( html css and js , ) then transform it in a wordpress theme , and only make it dynamically where it really needs , ( we are talking about themes that are not for selling , just build for one client ) ; can i do the same with shopify theme ? because sometimes the client ask for a completelly custom design on the home page (there's no similar theme) thanks jan ;
Hey Jhonatan,
yes you can build custom private themes in Shopify as well. And you're right, they need to be less dynamic then a public theme. :-)
However, usually, I wouldn't recommend building a private theme from scratch unless the client really wants to. It's mainly because oftentimes it's more cost effective to start with a premium theme and then customize from there as much as possible. Design could be a small tradeoff, but these would be richer in features IMO. :-)
