And a Wah pedal with 15 inch-a-reno Vader speaker Cabinetry and an analogue rotary speaker turnt tawn full blast.... effects for experimentation like in a grain silo to be stood in playing guitar, solos for miles... I prefer over sized plate reverb's... fx's soaring - Solo's.... Hi yaw!!!
Those Super Distor'trons were the best sounding coil split pickups I've ever heard on a video. The PAF'trons were good. Any one of those pickups costs more than the Donner guitar I just bought.
I've got the LP shaped Donner, which I put a DiMarzio Distortion in the bridge. To be honest, it was only a slight improvement. The standard Donner pickups are pretty good.
A filtertron super distortion is the best idea :), a wolf in sheeps clothing, I always do some relicing to all my nickel covered pickups to make them vintage looking while they are actually high output :).
This video was both a joy to watch and listen to. I think it’s one of your best, and I have seen a lot of them. To me what makes it great is 1) what you are playing is beautiful, and 2) it’s clear that you really enjoy playing with these pickups. The combination makes the video shine. Bravo!
I don't know about the rest of the Scooby-Gang here, but I could literally watch a 3 hour live stream of you testing pickup combos as we call them out. The folks at Somnium are genius-nerds. If I had the dough I would PAY you to do the 3 hr. livestream..
I was listening while browsing Filter'Tron pickup options on the DiMarzio website and then at the 9:50 mark in the video I had to switch browser tabs to look at the video because I wanted to see the playing- sounds awesome with the percussive technique!
My first electric guitar was a 1980, left handed Hondo Les Paul “lawsuit” copy. Made at the Sammick factory in Korea, built with laminated plywood and very inexpensive hardware. I never liked the pickups. I found out later, they are single coils, made to look like humbuckers by using a humbucker cover, and filling the void with foam. So i got a super D, and loved it instantly. Those early 80’s supers were the sound of the decade. 45 years later, i bought a 1983 Hondo 737, very close to my old original. Great shape, well cared for, same single coil sound. Now, i love that sound! Actually wrote an instrumental titled “hondo”, on all platforms where music is played and sold. I don’t think I’ll change the pickup out this time!
I whole heartedly agree. I love the idea of a Super Distortion in a Filtertron body. The sound I'm looking for with the look of something different? Hell yeah I'll buy that.
Great video Philip, some great sounding pickups and lovely real world playing. The Paf'trons sound wonderfully articulate and just a bit more focused than a full humbucker. The Distor'tron was a a revelation though - awesome cleans and split sounds. The original humbucker was all over classic 70s rock so I just love that sound.
Wow, sounds great! These Dimarzio reincarnations seem to really add some beef to them. It's like the Filtertron sparkle with a bit of extra warmth at the same time. Great video Phil.
10:57 NOW I know what you are thinking and goes on to say what I was not thinking because I was thinking, how does a bassist sound so darn good on a 6 string.
Here’s a silly question, how is the coil split activated? I have a Line 6 JTV59 that might want these pups for, but the posts don’t have switch capability
super distortions are the first humbuckers i ever used as an upgrade in a guitar. great pickup often overlooked. these sound so different from original sd though
In all fairness, TV Jones, who makes Gretsch's high end filtertrons, also has the same mounting options in every box, and gain junkies would love the Power'Trons.
It’s funny, the marketing of “Super Distortion” always threw me off the trail. That pickup sounds great! I really enjoyed the clean tone. When you hear it with overdrive, you fully understand why they marketed it that way.
These pickups have all the tones I've been looking for.....yea for 50 years.. I looked at the pricing for thes.....I'll take one of each..... But then Ill want'/need a Somnium guitar....It never ends, does it?
This video is elevated to new heights by splicing up : "Introducing our newest Decepticon" before each reveal starting @ 0:15, then @ 1:35, and then @ 1:59. Also bonus points for the using the literal transforming guitar. Just needs a Decepticon/Autobots logo tacked on haha.
After doing my own A to B comparisons I've found that dimarzios tend to win every time for me. The only place I've ever seen duncan outshine is in the extended range and EMGs always just sound like hot middy crap in guitars and basses alike
The regular super distortion is, IMO, one of the greatest humbuckers ever made. So cool to see the legacy of it continuing in new unique ways.
I have an original set in my '78 Goldtop Deluxe. What a sound.
Truth. The OG hot humbucker. Always brings to mind the tone Phil Collen of Def Leppard had on those first few killer albums.
It's amazing how well the Super Distortion works for genres that didn't even exist when it was first released, like death metal.
It is. It is
Mine were hand wound by Larry in a Long Island garage in 1980. They split and tap, like a modern dual sound
The super distortion would be really good for the baritone Gretsch that a lot of people play metal with too
And a Wah pedal with 15 inch-a-reno Vader speaker Cabinetry and an analogue rotary speaker turnt tawn full blast.... effects for experimentation like in a grain silo to be stood in playing guitar, solos for miles... I prefer over sized plate reverb's... fx's soaring - Solo's.... Hi yaw!!!
I have been using Super Distortions for 35 years. To me, it's my go to. Love. Nice sound on the video.
Those Super Distor'trons were the best sounding coil split pickups I've ever heard on a video. The PAF'trons were good. Any one of those pickups costs more than the Donner guitar I just bought.

That sounds really good. The single notes have a muscular quality. Nice playing Phil. Thanks for a great video.
Tim's masterclass is def paying off, glad i just signed up. Your playing sounds amazing. loved the slap riff.
Good on Dimarzio for thinking outside the box. I think it sounds incredible. Definitely the SD in the bridge and PAF neck.
Must get sparkle jet, and put in superdistortron!!
A filtertron super distortion is the best idea :), a wolf in sheeps clothing, I always do some relicing to all my nickel covered pickups to make them vintage looking while they are actually high output :).
Wow, I love the clarity between the string tones! Even with distortion you hear every string separately on full chords! I LOVE IT!
Multi cameras and angles! Nice. Production quality is getting really good. And sepia!
You....and that guitar are THE BEST at comparing pickups!!!! Ever!
This video was both a joy to watch and listen to. I think it’s one of your best, and I have seen a lot of them. To me what makes it great is 1) what you are playing is beautiful, and 2) it’s clear that you really enjoy playing with these pickups. The combination makes the video shine. Bravo!
Phil, your playing here is great!
Dig the sound, just perfect at the 5:45 minute mark when clean. When the midrange kicks in, it’s sounds awesome.
That PAF-Tron(s) sounded great! Very impressive! I have just the guitar to put a set in too!! Thanks, great review!! --gary
I don't know about the rest of the Scooby-Gang here, but I could literally watch a 3 hour live stream of you testing pickup combos as we call them out.

Just love your pickups videos. Thanks Phil!

Other than a P90, a Super Distortion and a Filtertron are my favorite pickups. So many choices....
I bought one and put it in a "The Loar" hollowbody electric. ITS AWESOME!
So fun to hear Phil play, plus cool pickups!
I whole heartedly agree. I love the idea of a Super Distortion in a Filtertron body. The sound I'm looking for with the look of something different? Hell yeah I'll buy that.

So funny I just started making a guitar around the Dimarzio PAF Trons! And I am with Phil, Dimarzio has so many pickup options and are great pickups!
Wow, I want to hear that in a stadium. First music was amazing Phillip, Lighter lighting amazing. The rest was just neato fine.
Props to Di Marzio. You have never let me down in 50 years.Thank you
Wow pickups sound incredible
That’s totally awesome! Would love to hear it side by side with some Gretsch pickups.
Love to try the iommi style pickups he went with prior to sabotage
Wow, sounds great! These Dimarzio reincarnations seem to really add some beef to them. It's like the Filtertron sparkle with a bit of extra warmth at the same time. Great video Phil.
Wow the superdistortion sounds amazing so beautiful clean. Best sounds i ever heard. Thanks Phil
Sounds great buddy, thank you for sharing in the great thorough way you do.Your inspiration is refreshing.
Which looper are you using? The amp sounds very clear and honest.👍
Plush reverb!
Nice tight distortion,nailed it.
No chainsaw grind,thumbs up!
Dig the middle funk mod.🤜
i like the extra angle and camera work Phil. You're always improving.
Can you compare the New'trons with TV jones classic filtertrons?
Wow 😳 I'm impressed Phil !!!
The best tone I have ever heard.
You have the best job ever Phillip! Great vid!
10:57 NOW I know what you are thinking and goes on to say what I was not thinking because I was thinking, how does a bassist sound so darn good on a 6 string.
Great playing…love it. You’re killing me, though. Just got my first Gretsch with ‘trons and now you got me thinking about upgrades!!
Would love to hear/see a video of all three in a comparison/contrast video.
OK now I have to find a G5222 Double Jet and put these in. Gotta love making a Gretsch even better!!
Also, you can buy humbucker pickup rings that are cut to fit Filtertrons.
9:50 I thought Tosin joined the video
Phil your the bomb. Thanks for your hard work. You make it look easy.
In all fairness, TV Jones, who makes Gretsch's high end filtertrons, also has the same mounting options in every box, and gain junkies would love the Power'Trons.
Great video and those sound nice. But I have to add, there is a time an place for the chainsaw going thru an aluminum trashcan sound.
Got a semi-hollow Gretsch G5620T which can already go pretty heavy, there's even metal demos of it online.
But these pickups may even be heavier!
I love the Super Distortion in my Jaguar.
Jerry Garcia had Dimarzio SD in his guitar. Clean and lovely(the guitar sound, lol!)
Awsome, Phil.❤️🙏🏻
Yeah I really don't need no demo - I already know those are mine .... I will go put an order in maybe this weekend ...
It’s funny, the marketing of “Super Distortion” always threw me off the trail. That pickup sounds great! I really enjoyed the clean tone.
When you hear it with overdrive, you fully understand why they marketed it that way.
Very cool idea! I've got a Gretsch they would work nice in!
These pickups sound fantastic!
These sound great !! Finally, pick ups for the Filtertron people.
Awesome sound
I think that is a very cool pickup/idea! Sounds very nice.
These pickups have all the tones I've been looking for.....yea for 50 years..
I looked at the pricing for thes.....I'll take one of each.....
But then Ill want'/need a Somnium guitar....It never ends, does it?
Anyone know how it compares to the Megatron high output pickup from Gretsch?
@9:49 - That sounds like a Megadeth song.
more like Animals As Leaders to my ear.
Yeah - I expected to hate them but bloody hell they sound great!
That clean tone Phil is a little reminiscent of a L.P deluxe with minunhums
I love these! Really doing their own thing for sure. Now I have to buy a new guitar to stick them in…
I would love to hear comparison between the DP100 and the superdistort-tron.
I've never been a huge fan of the Super Distortion (I mean, it's good but not my personal favorite), but I like the idea of a Filtertron-sized PAF!
Nice playing, Phil. And great demo. Is there more info on compatibility? I’d love one in my Goldtop.
Phil with those thick slaps. Great job.
The configuration that really intrigues me is the one Phil didn't try, the bridge Paf'tron in the neck with the SD'tron bridge.
Yeah, got to admit the sound is lovely.
GAWD DAYUM. These would sound incredible in my Gretsch Baritone
Sweet 👂👂!!! Thanks For Sharing 🎸🧠 🎶 🎶🎶 🎶 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶✌️

Hi, thanks for your vidéos. Il love this style of pickups. Have you ever tried Roswell Pickups FLT51-B-NI Filtertron Hot Rod Alnico V ?
9:50 Very Les Claypool sounding kinda riff.
I’m looking for humbucker pickups to replace some P90. Meaning I have P90 and do not want P90 anymore, but the P90 are larger than. Humbuckers
I think filtertrons are underrated. Love the video!!!
Differnt waxed pickups for different tonewoods.
Wood does have an effect on tone.
DiMarzio is a company I can stand behind.
Those pickups are rad as hell
So it looks like a filtertron but doesn't sound like one is that right?
Sounds wonderful!
They want you to buy pick ups like you used to buy pedals.
This is a cool pickup.
Another demonstration of why DiMarzio pups rule! The other brands are really great, but DiMarzio has always taken the lead (pun well-intended)!
does this filtertron Super distortion Humbucker pickup really djent?
The super distortion is the thing!
Great stuff!
Sounds great to me.
🧇
After doing my own A to B comparisons I've found that dimarzios tend to win every time for me. The only place I've ever seen duncan outshine is in the extended range and EMGs always just sound like hot middy crap in guitars and basses alike
Would love to hear those DiMarzio in that Gretch...
I want them. Don’t have a place to put them, but maybe I’ll build a guitar for them!
I'm surprised...sounds great!
I love DiMarzio
Finally got an option for my schecter ultra vi!
I did the opposite with my super distortion,i put a filtertron magnet in it. Big alnico 5 over the ceramic magnet. Its much sweeter sounding.
DiMarzio since around '83 for me.
