- Prototype of THQ & Heavy Iron's pitch to Pixar to be granted the license to produce the video game based on the upcoming Toy Story 3 movie. Unfortunately Disney*Pixar awarded the development rights to Disney's own Avalanche Studios for Toy Story 3.
This demo was played by me, while THQ EVP of Worldwide Studios Jack Sorenson & GM Lyle Hall of Heavy Iron presented the game and vision of THQ's proposal to none other than Ed Catmull and John Lasseter of Pixar @ Pixar's headquarters. It was demonstrated on one of five custom skinned Xbox 360s featuring Toy Story artwork with this demo installed on it.
As much as I love the actual game, this is still really interesting to see Heavy Iron’s pitch for how their version of the game would have looked.

so crazy to think the same company that made battle for bikini bottom, is still collaborating to make AAA games like call of duty today, even digging into their past finding Toy Story 3, I owned this game on the 360 as a child so it holds a special place in my heart. The avalanche game was beautiful however it’s very interesting to think what it would’ve been like made by the same devs as BFBB, i’d even go as far to say it looks very very similar to the avalanche game
Buzz crashing is hilarious, the flying looks fun too.

You know what’s so weird. The prototype they actually look and perform movie moves. The video game itself is nice but i feel this prototype could have played a humongous part in the game

Dang... finally getting to see this prototype makes me happy, yet also a little sad as I imagine what could have been. The game we got was a good game, and was a fun segway into the Disney Infinity line we know today. Though, through seeing what you can do in this prototype (and with it presumably showing that Woody and Buzz had actual attack moves) it would have been a fun action game with challenges similar to Toy Story 1, and Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue. Also, seeing that you would actually be able to make Buzz "fly with style," would have been a big seller to me. Oh well. It's nice of what we did get, and I was happy for it. But to dream of what could have been...

I like how in the slinky dog minigame they used a windows 95 shutdown sound

The Potato Heads are in this game, but not in the final. Probably due to copyright issues with Playskool.

I just wish we had access to the demo version so I can rip models of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (and possibly refine/remaster them).
I'd say Heavy Iron definitely could have done an equally good job with the source material. It's neat seeing their spins with more references to older Pixar media and a lot more physics simulation tech. The focus on simulation elements and physics remind me of Star Wars the Force Unleashed. It seems like they were very passionate about this IP. Makes me wish Disney could just find the right studios for their games.
Their animation talent and IP selection is great, but they never commit to games, and the few things they commit to are just boring, and with the wrong people. And as a result they set themselves up for failure constantly. The EA Star Wars deal is something straight out of an alternate dystopian reality, and yeah, no wonder that didn't go so well. Epic Mickey, Tron Evolution, and obviously Toy Story 3 are great examples of their animation talents being used well. It's possible. Maybe some things are best left to imagination, or Disney just needs to find the right crowd.
Anyone notice the Saints Row game magazine on Andy's bed? Silly THQ. Shame they went out as they did while also doing most of the Disney/Pixar properties along the way.

About how far into the film’s production was this demo presented? Apparently early on in the development of the film Buzz was supposed to be strapped to the front of the train like what was seen here. Curious if any other early elements of the film were present in the demo.
Dyl very early - at this stage, developers see the film as storyboards or wireframes. At least 14 months away from release

To be honest graphics look better than they did in the actual game for any console or pc
Which makes complete sense. The beta/demo here is just a small portion of a game. They could spend the time and resources making the small localized areas look as good as they could. Even making the character models higher quality to match. They didn't have to worry about matching that quality throughout a full game, nor did they have to worry about the high quality graphics slowing the game down once the rest of the stuff was put into place.
When the full game came around, they probably had to tone things down to make sure the game didn't drop frames like crazy. The more they put in, the less graphical quality they could have.
It's a similar reason a lot of E3 gameplay demos look way better than the final game. They're such a closed off portion of the game, where everything that wasn't needed for this specific demo was removed, that they had extra resources to make the game look better.
nah, graphics here look rather poor compared to the ps3/360 versions. lighting and character models are clearly inferior to the actual game. but you want to believe this demo looks better so you see what you want to see
So you say. They're in rough state then how polished they were in the final game. That's usually the case when developers focus more on trying to capitalize on the gameplay aspect first before doing visual touches.

In this prototype Mr and Mrs Potatohead are in this, the UI is different, Woody and Buzz have better running animations, Woody can use his lasso as a melee weapon and Buzz can use his laser just like the PS2/PSP version, the train level is different, there's a Buzz section where you fly and shoot Dr Porkchop's spaceship, the Buzz Lightyear game level is only the bossfight and its copy/paste from Toy Story 2 movie, there are mini games in Andy's room and Andy's bedroom is full of posters of other Pixar properties and from other franchises. Also monkeys and cards from the first movie have physics and the Zurg belt from Small Fry is here
