  • We are in a renaissance.
    Dnd has never had so many competitors, and while that may be scary for them, it’s absolute gold for us. Here’s 3 rules from DC20 that I think will fix some of the rougher parts of your 5e game, or just take the good parts to eleven.
    Oh, and here’s the link to a little sheet to hand out to your players to easily add these homebrews to your game: www.patreon.com/posts/three-d...

    For the death threshold I would make the negative hp equal to the character’s level + con mod. So it slowly increases as they level and fight enemies that do more damage.

  • @GutisFive
    @GutisFive Місяць тому +3

    Hi there!
    Coach touched on a damage variant in one of his livestreams, and if you want to add rolls to it you can take every point of damage as a d6.
    So, for example, if you hit is 1d6 damage, but if you make a heavy hit is 2d6 and so on.
    Remember to adjust hp accordingly lol

      @mkdynasty272 I agree that let people play what they want. However, there's a point where you are incorporating so much from another system that it began the question why not play that instead.
      This is kind of my view on any kind of game. Like my friends who mod Minecraft so much it unrecognizable, because they like what you can do in Factorio or Satisfactory.

    The "Degrees of Success" is taken from EarthDawn, basically prehistoric ShadowRun.
    And for the good attack rolls i would simply add anything over the AC as bonus damage, so it would be "attack roll" - AC

    A good way I've thought to implement the "degrees of success" for combat is to make each degree another weapon damage die. So 1d12 for axe, 2d12 for axe at +5, then you could run crits as maxed damage dice instead of extra dice so it still feels good. This would be the same for saves too far under the DC. I like death's door as a low number mechanic, one action/movement/bonus action per turn, -1 HP if you're not stabilized, a CON save as an action if you want to stabilize, -[prof+CON mod] is death. It still makes taking any actual hits deadly once you're on the door, but gives you some rounds to get healed if you're not being attacked. A higher number could be as much as [CON score+Level] if you want to have less instances of instant death from damage overrun, though it makes the bleeding damage less effective.

  • @cgollimusic
    @cgollimusic Місяць тому +1

    Going down in 5e coould just be that you get the one action like you said (movement coounts as an action) and you continue to take damage. When your damage gets to negative MAX HP you die. This way healing gets a debuff but youre encoouraged to avoid being put down like in DC20 and to heal before that happens.
    As to the beat by 5 system you could give all damage advantage. For every 5 you beat by, you reroll the damage and pick whichever was higher overall.

    In 5e there are 2 main power spikes, when your proficiency bonus increases, and when your tier of play increases (1-4, 5-10, 11-16, 17-20, like cantrips). All mechanics of power level like your scaling damage should be balanced based on one or the other (or both), so tier 1 (1-4): 1d6, tier 2 (5-10): 1d8, tier 3 (11-16): 1d10, tier 4 (17-20): 1d12 for each over. I'd say 3d6 is too much, you already have multiple attacks as a martial and spellcasters don't really need this with their cantrip scaling and their leveled spells.

      This was way the heck over my game design knowledge. Super helpful! Thank you so much, you literally just fixed something in my Kraken week video!

    • @JazzyBassy
      @JazzyBassy Місяць тому

      @@MilesAwayGames Glad to hear! Excited to hear about your Kraken week video! If you want to read more on it, you can actually gleam a lot about game design information and intent from reading the Dungeon Master's Guide, the Dungeon Master Screen, other official supplemental DM books, or Adventurer's League. A lot of mechanics and sections including improvised damage and DC's for traps, treasure tables, magic item prerequisites, and random encounter tables are mapped to the tiers of play. The discussion of Tiers of Play is found in the first chapter of of the DMG, but hopefully it'll be more easily found in the reorganized 2024 version!
      I'd say the other big levels aside from the tier increases are 9 and 13, where proficiency bonuses increases, and you get some really helpful features as well as Level 5 and 7 spell slots (odd leveled spells generally have a power spike), as well as level 3 and 4 spell slots for half casters. When I balance adventures for my shared campaign, I count level 9 as Tier 2.5, and level 13 as Tier 3.5.

    My idea for porting the "beat it by 5 rule" in 5e is to use something like the tempest cleric feature. So for every 5 you beat the DC or for every 5 a target fails a DC by 5 a player can choose to take the maximum of a damage die they would be rolling.

      My group is using a a scaling by 5 damage base on a little more than 1/4 max dmg.
      So 1d8 scale with +3 mod is reg hit 6 dmg, +5 is 7 dmg, +10 is 9 dmg, + 15 is 11 dmg. with the last being max dmg.
      Guiding bolt would be 8, 13, 18, 24 dmg respectfully.
