The song is called “The Fields of Athenry” not about the Easter Rising, but rather a man stealing food during the blight and being shipped off to Australia. Beautiful song.
Three of the world's four most beautiful voices are in that stairwell. If you've never heard Ronan Scolard sing, you've missed a treat. He's better known as a producer, but he'll occasionally do a song with his wife (Mairead Carlin).
This song has nothing to do with the 1916 uprising... It's about the potato blight in the 1840s and it was written in the 1970s so it wasn't even written during that time.. This is an absolutely beautiful rendition though:)
Dubliners’ original words - By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young girl calling, ‘Michael they have taken you away, For you stole Trevelyan's corn, So the young might see the morn.’ Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay. Low lie, the fields of Athenry, Where once we watched the small free birds fly. Our love was on the wing, We had dreams and songs to sing. It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry. By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young man calling, 'Nothing matters Mary when you're free. Against the famine and the crown, I rebelled, they cut me down, Now you must raise our child with dignity.’ Low lie, the fields of Athenry, Where once we watched the small free birds fly. Our love was on the wing, We had dreams and songs to sing. It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry. By a lonely harbor wall, She watched the last star falling, As the prison ship sailed out against the sky. For she will wait and hope and pray, For her love in Botany Bay. It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry. Low lie, the fields of Athenry, Where once we watched the small free birds fly. Our love was on the wing, We had dreams and songs to sing. It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry. (Repeat) Lyrics by Pete St.John, The Dubliners, 1979
My mom and her sisters used to sing and harmonize together. I will never forget the sounds and their joy. Too bad none of that remains on our music radio stations+++we often have to travel many miles to hear this sound. I am so so very thankful for UA-cam and for these sounds brought to my computer. This truly reminds me of what music is about in the best sense.
They sound like heaven together. Magnificent. I hope they would do this as a single for sale, or to make it in an even better quality of sound and video.
What makes this so impressive is not so much that it's really good-- which it is, although the sound quality is dodgy to say the least-- as that it seems ridiculously easy, almost tossed off on the spur of the moment. As far as I know the song's not on any Celtic Woman album and it hardly looks like they even rehearsed it. It's just raw talent.
Have you girls ever sang in Newfoundland? You should book the Mile One Stadium in St John's. I bet you will sell out! I love your voices and Harmonies are just mesmerizing. Getting home sick now lol

Fields of Athenry. It's about a guy who gets imprisoned and is being shipped off to Botany Bay(which is in Australia) for stealing corn to feed his family during the potato famine.
teery59 when Ireland rose against the British empire on easter morning during world war one the Irish were helping England fight against Germany and they were hoping that england would grant Ireland the freedom from English fuel and become there own country again but England reneged and the Irish people were pissed off so they did an uprising unfortunately the British empire squashed it and won that battle that day became known as Sunday bloody Sunday the band U2 did a song about it
These ladies could produce more compelling music in a stairwell than most artists could create on a soundstage with a full orchestra. Bless you both!

How could anyone not like this trio ??? Okay, maybe not the audio quality, but the voices & guitar are just perfect and unique sound.
I listen to these girls everyday. It sure makes my day go so good! Thank you for your music.
A hidden gem! Two woman, one guitar player in the stairwell and we have a concert!
Aren't Irish voices just so beautiful?!

I could listen to these girls all day. Their harmonies give me chills. Beautiful!!
Beautiful natural resonance & harmonies with their unamplified voices blending so nice throughout the octaves.
No fancy recording studio here, a great rendition. Either you've got it or not and these guys have it in spades.
They are Irish angels with angelic voices
Goose bumps & tears . Beautiful voices😍

What's the 1916 uprising? Was that the beginning of The Troubles and the IRA and Sinn Fien and all that?
I think it proper to mention that I believe that the third person on this song is Ronan Scolard --Mariead's husband.
An absolutely beautiful version by Glenn and Ronan Scolard on Ronans channel☘️☘️☘️
Lucky & talented guy ...

❤️I Love The Celtics Women Baby Doll Mairead Catlin,Sing I SEE FIRE, Awesome Voice!!
Acoustics in stairwells are amazing -- limited volume and lots of hard surface means instant feedback and reinforcement of lower tones.
I liked that too ...

It certainly is a beautiful and poignant song about the rebellion of the working classes against tyranny.

The Fields of Athnery.
What's the name of that song?
Fields of Athenry. It's about a guy who gets imprisoned and is being shipped off to Botany Bay(which is in Australia) for stealing corn to feed his family during the potato famine.
Sorry but the song is NOT about 1916, but rather about the Great Hunger of 1845 to 1852.
What's the 1916 rising?

Tyler Buckley Such a tragic event!
It comes up everywhere in Irish music.
