Curious as to why the PYC guys never use UTR as a gauge--since it's more...universal--but instead always refer to their own rating system. I'm not sure if I've ever hear the ET guys mention UTR, either. Just curious.
Great question, The PYC rating system is actually much closer to the UTR rating system than the NTRP system. My former coaches, Dave Howell & Daryl Cummings are actually from Vb and are the creators of UTR. We simply reference NTRP because more people are familiar with it. Thanks for the question! -Nate (PYC)
freakytea it actually can make a difference if the player does it every time over a long match, think about the margins that decide tennis matches sometimes
Seems like both of you guys were heavily underplaying and nervous, to say the least. I was expecting to see much more higher level of tennis from D1, D2 college players. Slightly disappointing. Maybe you should warm up more before playing the match. Also Ian, next time you do videos like this, please put the camera at the level during 7:18 of this video, but situated behind the baseline, near the fence/corner. It looks much better and gives the viewers better perspective of how you are using the court in 3 dimensions, unlike the default court view. You already have a camera and a cameraman anyway.
hey whatever Keep in mind that all of us are “former” D1 & D2 players. As much as we enjoy playing, the time on the court as a “player” has largely been substituted by coaching. The goal here was transparency even if the play was a little rough. We’re proud of the product because it does show vulnerability regardless of how experienced the player is. A longer warm up would have maybe helped, but time was short due to filming. Thanks for the Feedback, hope you enjoy the series. -Nate
Scott has a weird game, very nonchalant. He seems to be loose, and often changes the depth of his balls. Some of them are so short that they can be surprisingly dangerous... Still so interesting to watch. Do you think you analyse even more in this exercice or that's what you exactly do when you compete?
Otniel, people don't like NTRP ratings because of people like you. There are ATP/WTA tour matches where the players are playing extremely poorly that day, yet you'd be a fool to call them a 5.0 or 5.5 player. Their ratings are based on their results, not on how they look/play on a given day.
Thanks for watching Otniel. Keep in mind the camera puts on 10lbs and slows the ball down a tooooon . Seeing them live is something else entirely. Thanks for the feedback 🤙🏼
Court looks fast to me, maybe the balls too. Have you seen 4.0 tennis lately? Not this level. Are there 4.5's that could beat these guys? Absolutely. There are plenty of ex-college players "managing" their rating at 4.5. Ian absolutely could self rate at 5.0, play doubles with a 5.0 partner for a season and get computer rated. He could also play 4.5 and would not go undefeated. There are D1 guys out there playing 4.5 that are under 40. These guys are smart, they put 5.0 in the description to increase engagement....and it works.
It seems like to me that Ian is rolling his forehand a lot but when he does this, it floats out. Would have been better to drive through the ball. Also, I notice that Ian is slicing his serve to Scott's backhand all the time. And Scott has figured out how to attack this. In the second game Ian lost on his serve, he sliced to the backhand which Scott made a good shot to Ian's feet on the volley. I would have sliced into the body or kick it to his forehand at that critical point. The other thing I notice is that Ian's forehand has very little kick and you are giving Scott forehands and backhands in his wheelhouse which if it were me, I would have crushed it back. But since Scott is only pushing, Ian was not destroyed by this. He could knife the backhand slice and come in on Scott since I don't think Scott is a good low ball hitter. But Ian seems to just float his slices and ball just stays up. In general, Scott is outplaying Ian in steady ball or more like chicken ball.
It's a ranking of schools. Higher divisions get more money for their program and players, so on average they attract stronger players, but just because you play at a D1 school doesn't automatically mean you're better than a random D2 player. Hopefully that makes sense. -Ian
@@EssentialTennis Thanks for the explanation, Ian. College sports in the US fascinate me. In the UK they don't take sports to that level at university. They certainly don't fund programs that train people to essentially professional level, but then again I guess that's why the US produces so many world-class athletes.
@@josephwesthill2174 While the Divisions (DI, DII, DIII, NAIA, NJCAA) all have their merits and levels of abilities, having a ranking(UTR, USTA, etc) is probably the best way to compare players when they face each other. I have seen DIII(smallest NCAA schools) athletes beat DI players before. NCAA DIII Coach here. :)
Sana Ahmed I apologize on Scott’s behalf, all those nerves must have gone straight to the big fellah’s rather large head when he made that comment. He would be the first to admit that the majority of the “little girls” he trains with, hit harder than he and the rest of the boys do. 😉 -Nate (PYC)

Lance Lessler Hey Lance, Because Scott hits with a Eastern grip it tends to look like he is ushering the ball around. Watch his body closely though and you will see his hips rotating through, often to the point that his feet end up pivoting into a switch stance. Appreciate the feedback!
And the Ian guy has good form on his serve but everything else? Unless he had major injuries or age has hit him very hard there's no way he was ranked in d2 tennis. And these guys 5.0 ha ha

Curious as to why the PYC guys never use UTR as a gauge--since it's more...universal--but instead always refer to their own rating system. I'm not sure if I've ever hear the ET guys mention UTR, either. Just curious.
That's a good question, Johnnie. I'm sure they'll chime in. -Ian
Great question, The PYC rating system is actually much closer to the UTR rating system than the NTRP system. My former coaches, Dave Howell & Daryl Cummings are actually from Vb and are the creators of UTR. We simply reference NTRP because more people are familiar with it. Thanks for the question! -Nate (PYC)
Fun stuff and instructional, too!
That was our goal, great to hear!
At your level, you should be calling all of his foot faults!
I've never looked for foot faults, Jeffrey.....never will. Thanks for watching! -Ian
@@freakytea you can absolutely call an opponents foot faults
@@freakytea the same as if you they complained about your line call
freakytea it actually can make a difference if the player does it every time over a long match, think about the margins that decide tennis matches sometimes
-Nate
Im apart of the Div II retirees. I hope to play on this channel 1 day 😁
Absolutely, Michael! Where do you live?
Charleston SC
Just in time so I can eat lunch while watching lol
Nice! What's for lunch?
@@EssentialTennis Chicken francaise haha
You and me both. Timed my lunch just for this. Rice, beans corn, avocado and a bag of chips.
Yum! Glad we could join you for lunch 😀
YES
Scott has a weird game, very nonchalant. He seems to be loose, and often changes the depth of his balls. Some of them are so short that they can be surprisingly dangerous...
Still so interesting to watch. Do you think you analyse even more in this exercice or that's what you exactly do when you compete?
If any of you come down to Mexico, look me up. I'm always looking for somebody to play with.
By chance did the dude from Maryland know a dude named Ben Graham? Or Trey Taylor?
Kevin is my spirit animal:
"Continue"
"No! I think he's REALLY tight"
How many foot faults does scott need to do?
YES
PAPERBOY all of them 😉
No way these guys are 5.0’s, 4.0/4.5 level at best. Great video though, love the post game analysis, keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching, Otniel!
Great game.
Thanks for watching, Ranjit!
I don't like Ian's game but i gotta admit that he is very good at the net with some amazing smashes!
Thanks for watching!
What does D1 and D2 mean?
"Division 1" and "Division 2" NCAA college, Joseph. Different levels of American College play. -Ian
@@EssentialTennis So is Division 1 better than Division 2? Does that make Scott higher ranked than you?

Me, when I double fault for the 2937574th time:
Better angles please
Appreciate the videos! I will say little girls can be strong players too 💪 ;)
Sana Ahmed I apologize on Scott’s behalf, all those nerves must have gone straight to the big fellah’s rather large head when he made that comment. He would be the first to admit that the majority of the “little girls” he trains with, hit harder than he and the rest of the boys do. 😉 -Nate (PYC)
100%, Sana!
@@nathanbolling8274 no worries. I come from a family of 5 girls and we are just as rough, tough and strong as the guys. You're all good people! For all the dads raising their girls , I like to throw that out there :)
Sana Ahmed love it!! ❤️💪🏼🙌🏼
My "little" sister is a US Marine, Sana. I know all about tough girls 😀 -Ian
Can we see Nate vs Kev next please?! Keep up the good work
Next match will be Kevin + Ian vs Scott + Nate!
Love the 💡 Zach! We actually discussed a match between Kevin and I, but I got injured unfortunately just before leaving for Cali. Maybe we’ll set that up for the future! The dubs match between ET & PYC was a blast though. Stay tuned, you’ll definitely enjoy it.
-Nate
This is a great realistic match, Both players need to practice what they preach .Easier said than done ,play your natural game .
Always easier said than done :-)
I love it when the people I’m learning from do the same stupid shit that I do. You never master this wonderful game.
Keep up the great work!
The stupid mistakes unite all of us, Dana! Haha
It’s the misses that keep us coming back! Thanks for watching Dana!!!
would like to see Scott playing singles
ATP/WTA could learn so much about what you guys are doing!! This is freaking AWESOME!! You guys rock for doing this! Tennis players definitely can relate to this stuff! 🙏
Thanks so much for the kind words, vectorthurm. Appreciate it!
Love getting feedback like this vectorthurm! Thanks for the kind words. 🤙🏼🍻🙌🏼
Notable
VAC We have noted that it’s notable 😉
In all honesty there is no way this is 5.0 tennis. You guys have to be real with yourselves.. I've played all my life and have coached professionally for over 10 years and this is a low 4.5 at best.
Scott, that backhand is pretty oh so pretty. More match play videos!!
More on the way!
this is nrtp 5? this is ian? wait what? I'm underwhelmed!
Scott seems to be "arming" his ground strokes, with little contribution to his hits from rotation or forward movement from his body.
Lance Lessler Hey Lance, Because Scott hits with a Eastern grip it tends to look like he is ushering the ball around. Watch his body closely though and you will see his hips rotating through, often to the point that his feet end up pivoting into a switch stance. Appreciate the feedback!
Noice series!
Thank you, Simone!
Oh shoot. I’m from Maryland 😂
pretty sure these guys are 3.0s
Yaser Rahimi pretty sure your comment game is 3.0 lol
I wish y'all played baby shark for the bg music
😆
Kinda hard to see the ball
returns are terrible. 5.0????????
Surprised how soft they were hitting.
Haha these guys really think they could fool the public? Especially Scott Baxter d 1 player? Ha Ha look at the form.. Are these guys jokers or what
And the Ian guy has good form on his serve but everything else? Unless he had major injuries or age has hit him very hard there's no way he was ranked in d2 tennis. And these guys 5.0 ha ha
No joke I know people who learned tennis for 1 year and are better than these guys. Sure you don't need to play tennis extremely well to teach but please don't lie or fabricate your credentials. It makes you look like a clown. Good tennis players know these guys are jokes
Ian does not have a backhand only slice. and his forehand is just good to pass the ball and that's it.
May I suggest you both work more on your fitness? Being out of breath after 3 games in the first set is not a good sign!
I feel like my game has improved massively since I started doing more HIIT cardio workouts so mimic the intensity of a tennis rally
