Thanks for your generosity, how can you pay more than AUD5 for a Tshirt? AUD4 for a cap was too much. The vendors were laughing in their mind.

  • @yesbeautyfly

How could you pay so much? Min wage for Australian was even less than AUD19.5/hour in 2019. Though, you may earn more, no need to feel sorry to crash the price or else price differences based on nationalities cannot stop.

Know the price of some items that you may be interested in. Do some brief currency conversions before heading to the market/shop. Say a brand t-shirt is 20 dollars back home & you know you will be needing one. Convert that into the local currency, then subtract a decent bit due to said item being fake.
Once you go in, you know the price so that when the calculator gets whipped in front of your face you won't look like a mark trying to count things out. Say it's too high & put in your own price to the calculator. They'll usually say too low/you crazy. Just say ok & walk away. They either shout you back or you go elsewhere & do the same thing. If you can't find the item anywhere else, then talk a slow walk past again without looking in & they may shout you back.
If more tourists would go in prepared, they would never even think about trying to bump prices up to these ridiculous amount.

    - i sell these back home in china so i know the prices.
    - i like u but i like discounts more.
    - I bought the same yesterday at 30%
    - i dun like the quality and i changed my mind and lower my offer now.
And if they embarrass you, don’t fall for this trick. The rest of the stalls would call u a cheapskate but impressed that you are an iron lady and a winner! Walk off with your head held high. Lol!!

Can I ask why you keep saying "la" after each sentence?? LOL (I'm Vietnamese and we never use that!) - BTW the key to haggling in Asia is to actually pretend to walk away after your second or 3rd offer max (with small increments)! If you keep going up, they know they can still haggle with you to get a better price for them even though in reality your first small offer already made them a decent profit.

At the very least, they will suggest 3X what they want. Being a foreigner, they think you are rich. You must haggle! If that does not work, walk away. I've been to Saigon 30 times.
Ben Thanh is known for the hustle. Some get their wares from Chinese factories. Some products are stolen off ships delivering real items.
When DVDs were popular, the newest copies were terrible and overpriced. We always bought the older movies fora few dollars. There are several companies in China producing old fake American, Spanish, Mexican and French coins. You see them all over Vietnam. They are worth nothing. You find them in shops and spots where tourists go. Just use your common sense. Happy shopping!!

All that haggling makes the episode interesting viewing but in reality..just go to the op shop if you want bargain clothes without going through the same old conversations every time with the seller
