Hey guys and welcome back to Mad About Skin where today I want to tackle the topic of caffeine skin care and the pros and cons of using a caffeine eye serum in your skincare routine.
The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5 + EGCG has to be one of the most popular skincare products on the market with lots of people reaching for it so help tackle dark circles and under eye discolouration. However having used The Ordinary eye cream for the past 3 years I found that I was getting great benefits but a lot of side effects.
The benefits of caffeine in skincare have been well studied and are listed below:
Reduction in dark circles - caffeine speeds up blood flow which can prevent pooling which is the main cause of the purple or blue undertones under the eye
Reduction in puffiness and water retention - caffeine speeds lymphatic drainage which is wonderful for eliminating water retention and puffiness around the eye and jawline.
Powerful antioxidant - caffeine is a powerful antioxidant which will protect the skin from free radical damage and ensure that we minimise oxidative stress in the skin.
Unfortunately whilst lots of people celebrate the benefits of caffeine in skincare there is less attention paid to the side effects of caffeine which I wanted to call out in this video also.
Caffeine causing dryness - caffeine serums can cause dryness if the ingredient is not formulated alongside other hydrating ingredients and humectants.
Redness - the increase of blood flow which caffeine can deliver can trigger an increase in redness in the skin which is something which can be most pronounced with those with existing redness in the skin or rosacea.

Hi Rob! Great video per usual. Would you ever consider doing a video which reviews some of the more common ingredients on the back of skin care? There are some ingredients that pop up over and over and as a biochemist, I know what some of them and how they work but not all of them and definitely not how they work on skin. You are more knowledgeable about skin care. I would love to learn about them, rather than going through my own data. I expect some of them are sensitizing and we don't know it. Maybe the MAS family would also be interested?
I like the Ordinary’s caffeine eye serum; found it did a great job on my puffy morning eyes. I did use up a whole bottle of the NIOD one Rob recommended but didn’t see any results. It’s back to the Ordinary for me. Fortunately, no dryness or other issues. Just goes to show that nothing works for everyone.
I have dry eyes that I take a prescription eye drop for, and I was using this caffeine eye serum without knowing it causes dryness and my eyes were more irritated. I had to stop using it and the dryness has improved so if anyone has similar dryness issues of their actual eye (not just the skin around it), consider stopping using this product. Appreciate your video and the details of side effects so I know I’m not alone!

I'm so glad I found this video and your comment!! Have been using the ordinary caffeine eye serum for about two weeks, my eyes have been driving me nuts! Sad to stop using it but glad it didn't break the bank to try it out.
I've been using The Inkey List Caffeine eye serum for a few years and it's helped with undereye puffiness. I didn't care for The Ordinary caffeine, but that was a few years ago.
I use the Ordinary Caffeine daily under my eye for puffiness. But I had heard from Dr Dray that it could be drying so I put it on AND moisturizer at the same time and then put th Deux eye patches over it (highly recommend them, reusable eye patches, you can put on whatever serum or cream you want under them) and I just leave all of that while I do my makeup. I really love the Ordinary caffeine solution. I used it all over my face, and while I haven't seen a derm yet, I believe I may have rosacea. It calmed down the redness on my cheeks almost instantly, and if my cheeks were irritated from something, it always calmed that down. My skin is normal to dry, and sensitive, and it worked wonders; so I think whether it works on you is dependent on your skin.

Yes, caffeine restricts the blood vessels so it should help reduce redness for rosacea sufferers. I haven't tried it but have red about it. Would love to try a light caffeine serum on my cheeks and nose.
Do you wash your face after using it?
Hi Rob I tried this one way back near the start of the ordinary brand. I remember it being a bit drying, but I used it under an eye cream and it ok. Dark circles and puffiness aren't really a major issue for me tbh - obviously a poor night's sleep will show up, but a bit of brightener and concealer covers it fine. Dryness is an issue though (dry dry dry from scalp to toe due to menopause and eczema), so anything remotely drying will not stay in my routine. I think i used about a third of the bottle and gave it to a friend, who liked it under a moisturising eye cream (she had more puffiness than me though). i've never bought it since and don't seek out caffeine in my eye product tbh. I need maximum moisture even in an eye product, so I like a cream formulation. I'm using the Benton fermentation eye cream or the PY black tea eye cream right now during the day, with the Avene physiolift eye (retinaldehyde eye cream) at night. My daytime eye product has to be both hydrating/moisturising and contain peptides etc, but for night I want the retinoid for true anti aging. I use vaseline around the lashline and the Avene physiolift around the eye. The vaseline stops any migration into the eye or lashline. As it is formulated for the eye it has less retinaldehyde than my G&G Agame I use on the face, but enough to give me some results on the aging skin of the eye area. Best wishes.
Currently doing a caffeine drink withdrawal as I drink way too much! ☕☕☕ However I'm loving your recommendation of the Cien Q10 eye cream. I'm glad you have done this video as I now know to avoid the ordinary product as I have super dry, red & sensitive skin 👍

Love love love The Ordinary caffeine serum 😄 Just finished third bottle and the next one is already waiting. I am a mom of two toddlers, and they wake me up every night. My face looks like a balloon in the morning 🙈 I have no time nor the energy to do any kind of makeup, so good skincare is a must! I didn't noticed any side effects from The Ordinary caffeine solution. I have oily, sensitive and rosacea prone skin. There are many many things that irritate me, but luckily this serum is not one of them 😄

I’ve only used it when I went out clubbing the night before! (I don’t drink alcohol but soda and bitters to hydrate when I’m clubbing) The lack of sleep would make my eyes puffy the next morning so I’d dab a bit of the Ordinary’s caffeine under my eye & wow! Of course I haven’t used it once during the pandemic and while I am vaxed and boosted too many of my friends got Covid going clubbing so I’m still staying in. My Ordinary caffeine is still waiting….

have been using the caffeine solution around the eye area for months, then I will use the argireline solution 10% for the rest of the face as an anti-aging serum, but months later like 3 months plus, a few days ago when I pay close attention to my bare skin, I noticed that some really short hair appeared near my temples next to my eyes, like strawberry hair, I am a person who has barely any facial hair, let along around the temple area which is a very odd place to grow facial hair, the hair even grows to the corner of my under eyes. Same problem also occur on my laugh lines and my forehead, usually after applying the caffeine solution around my eyes, I would then use the same fingers to apply argireline solution on my forehead and laugh lines, so I am not sure what is the actual cause of this unusual facial hair growth
I mix caffein with the HA cream and use it all over my face and neck! Love it! Plus the EGCG is a really good antioxidant! But I do have to say that when I used caffein alone I saw some dry skin around the eyes

I'm so confused because The Ordinary's Caffeine Serum hasn't really worked for me, everyone else seems to love it! Normally I don't have puffy eyes in the morning, but about a week ago I started waking up with veeeeeery puffy eyes. I hadn't even been crying 😆
But the serum didn't really work for me even then. I was thinking that maybe I was having a bad reaction to some product, it might've been an expired antioxidant serum that I ended up throwing out.
However I'll be looking for another caffeine product, I loved your tip of putting caffeine on the jawline for puffiness!

I used a whole bottle without any issues and saw little to no results and going on my second bottle I began experiencing irritations, so I cut it out 😖 Like no thank you. I however just bought the Cien eye cream that Rob recommended and I’m so excited to try it 🤩

I think The Ordinary is meant to be used as an eye serum so I still use an eye cream either before or preferably after. Just like I do with other serum products. And if you had too I very much doubt you would have experienced any dryness. I haven't.
This just arrived today, and used it tonight - what a mistake I made! Too drying so had to use PC anti-aging eye cream on top of it. It made my fines so tight, nope not for me 😂
I used it for the first time last night but unfortunatly i've came out in a bumpy red rash, it was worth a try though.
Can we pair caffeine serum with a peptide + copper serum?
interesting this happened to you! I recently tried using it as an all over face serum on the recommendation of dr dray's youtube channel, and my skin had a major reaction! I was covered in textured bumps for two weeks. I think it is too highly concentrated for its own good, and deserves a reformulation.

I have been searching everywhere because I swear it leaves bumps that arent pimples on the edge of my eye contour! I only use it for eyes, but the last one it gave me was massive, stayed for 6 weeks & left a lovely scar. It was crazy! I'm not happy it happens to you too, but I'm happy to get confirmation it's not me blaming the bumps on the wrong thing!

L'Oreal hyaluronic acid eye serum with caffeine works for me.Also I've been using revox 5% caffeine with green tea it's good but little bit drying.

I tried a bottle of this, but I'm not predisposed to puffiness/bags under my eyes so there wasn't really much it could do for me. I've got the Good Molecules Yerba Mate eye gel on order as it seems to have a broader base of good ingredients such as peptides.
Update on the good molecules one?? Is it better

It didnt dry me out, but I swear it causes bumps along the very outside of the eye contour. Not pimples, just...bumps?The 1st weeks I used it it caused a massive lump, not a cystic pimple, not a pimple at all, but it hung out for about 6 weeks and left a lovely scar/hyperpigmentation spot. That was a year ago, but I needed something for my dark circles the other day & thought, maybe that lump & bumps were a coincidence, other product, allergy etc. I'm not sure though. I didnt see much improvement so I'm just gonna say nah I guess. I hate wasting a whole bottle of something, but if it's not good for you, it's not good for you. Plus it's hard to give it to a friend when you say why you cant use it...lol
I noticed right after application that I had increased heart rate which was surprising
because I used it at night to test when I had no other caffeine in my system anyone else have this problem?

This is a good reminder to declutter 😂😂😂 My TO caffeine solution has been sitting unused in the fridge for more than 4 months now. Time to let. It. Go.
Seriously though, I wanted to like it but it was drying, even without everyday use, and my eye area felt sort of tacky. I switched to the Q+A eye cream but that too is not in regular use. I figured that a good splash of cold water did the same trick. Should’ve listened to my granny in the first place… 🤷🏼♀️😜

I had the exact same experience to The Ordinary's under eye serum.... dry as the desert!! The product that has dramatically reduced dark circles and puffiness under my eyes is the Elf Holy Hydration Eye Cream. I only use a very small amount, so the small jar still lasts quite a long time!!🥰❤️❤️

I never knew you could use it by the jaw. I know I used it around my lips and it worked well for fine lines. I don’t understand why.
Sounds like Caffeine would be even more dehydrating for the skin if used in conjunction with Hyaluronic Acid.
Love your informative videos but this one has really affirmed my result…PARCHED !! I just bought this and used it for 2 days. Out running errands, look in the rear view mirror & wondered what the #@! happened in y eye area. Crinkly, dry , sad mess. I realized that the caffeine serum always my only change. 🤔 I have been using the Ordinary caffeine serum topped off with herbal dynamics vit k cream for the past year for some minor darkness. While I do have very very mature skin, I am now noticing skin laxity under the eyes. This could be normal but now I am wondering if it is the caffeine I use it morning and evening in my routine. I think I’ll stop for awhile and see if it firms back up or maybe I just need to get a co2 treatment

I actually use the Ordinary Caffeine Solution on my scalp, in a mix with rosemary water and some drops of castor oil. It has been helping me a lot.
I think this is not for me, I've been using this product for almost 3 months and I don't see any difference, actually, I started with puffiness under my eyes and this product don't work, I don't know why. Maybe I need to try other brands
TO really itriated my eyes after a little while. Currently using the cien mixed with bakuchiol in the morning and niod FECC in the eve. I wish the caffeine solution worked for me, but not to be!

I noticed the dryness but also little white bumps under the skin below my eyes so I stopped using it and it’s going away.

I want to know why the bumps? I got them too & ended up with a massive one that lasted 6 weeks. It was not acne/cystic acne. It was almost the size of a skittle or a chickpea for 6 weeks!
Ordinary Caffeine solution did nothing to my undereye area. So I started mixing it with my moisturizer just not to waste it.

This worsen the appearance of my eye contour… I normally have this blueish colour and this definitely worsen that appearance of it
TO caffeine eye solution never worked for me. I think it dried me out. I ended up using it in my back thighs 😂

Idk I used The Ordinary caffeine eye serum for 4 months and I didn't see any results. There was no difference between me using it or not 😐 Didn't have any dryness either. Just.. nothing. It was sort of a waste of money.
Edit: for anyone curious, I have dark circles and puffiness which I inherited from my grandma

I haven’t tried it!! (The Ordinary’s Caffeine serum) I’ve tried other products from The Ordinary (of course) and I’ve used caffeine products from other brands though.
But I have other nice eye creams and I prefer The Origins Ginzing creams or their serum with a little peptides and a very nice formulation before caffeine. I also would recommend sleeping on the back, that will in the long run decrease under eye puffiness and other things.

Did not work for me, my dark circles got darker.
I now have dark circles. My mom has them, but I never did. I've been using this product for about 4 months now, and I am now seeing dark spots under my eyes😢
Did they go on discontinuing?
