Excalibur definitely looks worth the drive out here! It’s probably one of those parks that’s great for locals but not worth going out of your way to, but if I get the chance I for sure won’t skip out on this park
I grew up going to this park every summer. Adults may not feel this way but for kids and teens, it has a certain magic about it, especially when it gets dark. Most of us had spent the entire day on the beach in the sun so the feeling of being freshly showered and in clean clothes after having all of that vitamin d mixed with the rides and atmosphere made the feeling of being there even more magical. Excalibur is was rickety the last time I rode it around 2010 but was always really exciting.
Every day I'm amazed you're channel does not have far more subscribers yet...I thoroughly enjoy every review and in depth/element by element analysis. Keep up the great work, for the communities sake.
Awesome review! Having Funtown, Palace Playland, and all of OOB's offerings within such a short distance of each is a winning combination. I was able to get free cups of water at one of the stands near the water park. I wonder if it was due to the heat wave at the time; or if it's just inconsistency being inconsistent.
I was born and raised in Maine, funtown splashtown was my childhood. Fell in love at a very young age and I still crave going back every summer. The park is nothing special but retains the retro nostalgia of classic amusement parks.
Grew up going there every summer while on vacation in Maine. You probably know what I mean when I say that it’s hard to describe what it felt like being there, especially as it started to get dark and you’d be running around the rides with your friends, seeing who you’d run into from the beach, etc. especially since we’d normally do Excalibur, Sea Dragon and the log flume at night, which were in the busier area for older kids/adults. The best way I can describe it is a true sense of magic, wonder and just…excitement. It isn’t themed but it truly is a separate world from the rest of Saco and OOB.
damn i'm one of the first 20 viewers! super excited to watch this, always wanted to go to maine in general but if i do i'll definitely stop here after your excalibur analysis
This was the park I grew up going to as Canadian summer visitor. I’ve been to Disney, Universal, Wonderland and La Ronde, memories of which will never include the same level of childhood, magic, wonder and excitement that Funtown has. I have memories of basically every ride in this video and I haven’t been there in at least 14 years. I hope they keep it going as long as possible because this place has a special spot in the hearts of an entire generation of children in the area.
As a born and raised local, it helps that it's so close. Honestly, it's what got me into waterslides. Recently survived Mount Olympus. I actually adore the way its walkway is made. It's like going through a magical land on multiple quests. I just miss the Galaxy coaster and I really would've wanted a real sword.
One thing I like about Funtown/Splashtown is that you can bring your own cooler and park it under their shaded canopies for the day. We're able to pack all the healthy foods we want vs. the pizza/fries/burgers options, and you can pack all your own drinks and save a lot of money. As for free water, they do have a drinking fountain by the bathrooms next to the kiddie rides area. I agree that the walking paths are awkward, and after learning that it was originally two parks that combined into one and later added on, that starts to make sense. You can see the division in the two parks.
As a Maine local Excalibur is one of my favorite wooden coaster's of all time. There is something about it that trumps all others I have been on. Maybe it's just nostalgia.
I've lived in ME for 8 years and somehow just got to Funtown for the first time last week. It was good! It's as weird as you say. For such a small property, we got turned around three times trying to find Excalibur. It was running really well except for some jackhammering on the 3rd to last turn. The ejector off the first drop in the back was especially sharp at the very end of the day. Dragon's Descent was definitely potent, and Astrosphere was fun and the image projections are hilarious. The park has significantly increased prices (including 3PM discount) since this video was posted, though, and it's getting close to a point of being hard to justify. We spent something like $68 for entry for the dry park only for TWO of us-- WITH the afternoon discount. Still plenty of time to do what we wanted to do, and I understand they're still coming back from COVID even now, but yikes.
A lot of parks have raised prices in recent years. I'm glad they still do the afternoon discounts at least unlike most parks that would still make you pay for a full day.
Funtown has a lot potential to be a really great park. The ride line up literally hasn’t changed in 25 years though. The exceptions being Excalibur and Dragon’s Decent. I would love to see Funtown get a proper steel coaster or a smaller RMC. I would love to see the Casino get replaced with something like Wipe Out from Cannobe. I would love to see a Pier Fries stand and a Rocco’s/Bill’s/Lisa Pizza installment. There is no reason why Funtown couldn’t be the New England equivalent of Cedar Point.
I think we could do a few things here: 1 new inverted ride 2 new flat rides (maybe an old attraction from a park like Kennywood would be awesome) maybe like, an old Skydiver and even a Spider ride? And def a NEW coaster!
I went here in middle school, and after, grew up in the area. It was always fun as a kid, and it's good sized for that age, and with no other bigger parks in the immediate area. $55 is the combo pass now in 2023, and I live out in Ohio, where at Cedar Point you can get a day there for that price, which makes this park really expensive. But again, like you say, there's nothing else it's size around, and it is a good time, worth it when you can go right to the beach in the nearby town. There's also the drive in theater nearby, and an outdoor ropes course/ adventure park too.
This park looks cool! I'm probably going to visit it at least once in my life. Asuming that they don't go bankrupt, and if it does, Gene Staples would probably purchase it.
2:24 Most parks are super strict on bringing any sort weapon into a park, and then funtown I'd just out there selling real swords 😂 (kinda reminds me of how at adventure park USA, you're free to bring a gun in as long as it's closed carry)
I was once turned away at the entrance for having a butter knife in my cooler, so they are strict about weapons in the park. They just had me put it in my car. Plastic ones. are okay, though.
I've wanted to visit this place for a long time, and have been in the area often because my sister-in-law lives near there, but it's always been a tough sell for my family because to them, there's little to distinguish Funtown Splashtown over Canobie and/or Water Country, which are a bit closer. I think I'm going to have to make a day trip by myself sometime just to check out Excalibur, and maybe I could hit Palace Playland and ride Sea Viper on the same day. 5 of the 6 operating coasters in Maine are at those two parks (the sixth is a Wacky Worm at York's Wild Kingdom).
@@CanobieCoaster It's great! Not the longest ride, but the production values are way out of the league of what you expect from this tier of park. It has me thinking that a major dark ride (something on the level of Battle for Metropolis, though it'd be cooler if it had an original theme) is really what Six Flags New England is missing. Most of the smaller parks in the region have them!
I could easily see myself coming to this park if I was doing some vacationing along the coast of Maine. I was also thinking of including this on a future New England amusement park trip. I heard from Coaster Studios that this park isnt that far from Canobie Lake Park. Is that true?
I was just here today with my 8th grade band and chorus after we played in front of judges at a near by school forget what it’s called but then we went here and me and my friends went on Excalibur twice I really do like the park over all though I live only like a half hour away too.
I went there it's awesome im still suprised the wooden roller coaster is holding up it shales when you ride on and and it's so sketchy but trust me it's awesome
I think the best part of funtown is the pirates boat just because of the airtime and height with such minimal lap bars. Also I hated Excalibur because of its ruffness.

It's good if you're in New England.
its VERY fun but when it starts to rain they make it go faster because its made of wood so the water falling on your face feels like needles

awww I can't believe the galaxi coaster isn't there anymore those helixes are one of my earliest coaster memories 😍 love ur channel canobie coaster !!
Thanks! Wild Mouse is a fine replacement.
Kinda mad since both this and palace playland (parks that are near eachother) both got rid of there galaxi coasters.

I think it's inconsistent. At one stand this year, the person serving the water said it was free and then the cashier charged me for a soft drink.
I was born and raised in Maine, funtown splashtown was my childhood. Fell in love at a very young age and I still crave going back every summer. The park is nothing special but retains the retro nostalgia of classic amusement parks.

It's a nice park.
Every year my school takes the band/chorus kids here, and boy, am I looking forward to my second trip here!
Nice!
In my 8th grade year, my band was supposed to go here. Unfortunately my class didn’t go because of Covid and it was never made up :(

I am not surprised why they got rid of the sword shop.
Short wait times are a big plus for Funtown! Limited rides, but enough of a variety and most VG!
Sure are!

Fun/adorable fact: Dragon's Descent got its name and theme due to Ken & Violet's then 5-year old grandson because he loved dragon's.
Cool!

I believe they sent them to the front for pickup so you couldn't wield it in park.
I was once turned away at the entrance for having a butter knife in my cooler, so they are strict about weapons in the park. They just had me put it in my car. Plastic ones. are okay, though.
Do you know why they got rid of the back pieces?
On the body slides? Not sure.

I think they may have sent it to the front of the park for pickup if you bought one.

Definitely for me, the only main reasons to come is for Excalibur and the drop tower. How good is that drop tower? Does it have good airtime?
Dragon's Descent has a strong but brief pop of airtime on the drop.
