I like how the hatch stays vertical and doesn't fold back. It gives an additional large drag surface above which helps the craft to naturally want to pitch up; the faster the craft goes the more severe the effect. It also forces a lot more air into to rotor and thus also greatly increases vertical thrust potential than it would have without it. Really cool.
I never thought about that. That's actually genius. And when it closes you get a nice, natural attitude and a perfect AOA bc the f35 is just weird and the pilots are crazy

I saw this plane in The Avengers (2012) for the first time in the hulk and thor fight scene 😅 When I saw that rear thruster turning and making it fly like a harrier jet I thought its a made up sci-fi plane But when I saw its a real thing, my mind was blown away
The fan is a significant improvement over the harriers rotating nozzles. The nozzles hot discharged gasses could get sucked into the air intake and cause a flameout. You might have to look around to find it but the harriers often didn't quite land veritably. They instead lost power and basically dropped the last couple of feet. The fan means no hot low oxygen output gasses to get sucked into the engines. The vectored engine on the back is far enough away to not be an issue.
