The movie "Om Shanti Om" was a homage to 70s and 80s Bollywood with the story of "Karz" as a backdrop.
They paid homage to this movie. In fact, Rishi Kapoor (the actor in Karz) and Subhash Ghai (the Director of Karz) both had a cameo in Om Shanti Om in the awards ceremony scene.
Om shanti om got it’s climax from Madhumati, so it adapted Karz and Madhumati both

Rishi Kapoor is known to master the instrument he was playing in any movie.. or atleast that much part where he was shown playing the instrument..and he has a record of playing the maximum instruments in bollywood on screen... guitar, violin, drums, dafli, flute among others... He was also known for his perfect lip sync for his songs.... no one has go it as perfectly as he did.... surprisingly ranbir comes the close second they say.
I so want them to react to Dafli Wale. I love how Rishi Kapoor plays the dafli in that. And I love the choreography of that song.

Actually it's not just a song.... it's the pre climax scene for this movie.
Without subtitle you miss the whole thing.
Subhash ghai movies usually had these long musical format songs near the climax that summarized the story.

This song from the movie Karz is so iconic infact the most dramatic so very well taken. Actually it's a reincarnation of a murdered person whom Rishi Kapoor plays. The song is composed by the famous duo musicias Lakshmikanth and Pyarelal.A thoroughly entertaining movies of the 80's directed by the famous Bollywood director Subhash Ghai. I will recmmend two classics - 'SUJATA' and 'BANDINI'. I am not sure if you are familiar with the actress NUTAN. If you have not seen her work, you have missed a major amount. Try and see her work in this classic month. The movies are in black and white. Best wishes.
Pleeeeez Watch MERA NAAM JOKER. It is considered Raj Kapoor's MAGNUM OPUS. It is a masterpiece. The movie is 4hr 9min long (it felt an hr to me). Plz do a movie review of it. The movie will surprise you snd was way ahead of its time. It was released in 1970.
(CAR-Z) Kara from my childhood. Stayed with me. (Not froM India, but South America) Classic and one of Subash Ghai's best when he was in his prime. WIsh you would watch in context. This is the pay off song.

Chori Chori is a lovely watch - Raj Kapoor and Nargis. A remake of 'It Happened One Night'. Pakeezah is another classic - with Raj Kapoor and Meena Kumari (tragic life...the film took decades to complete and you can see the deterioration in her health in the later parts)
As a nostalgic movie this movie was preety grounded . also the reincarnated person doesn't look the same bit.

I think you must watch and react on this movie "Karz" this was based on the reincarnation theory. Rishi Kapoor is playing a rebirth of Raaj Kiran who keep on appearing in this song in place of Rishi Kapoor.
This movie is based on rebirth ...rishi kappor comes after his previous birth character has been killed by the heroine in that song which was sitting in auditorium

This movie is much serious than Om Shanti Om... They made a caricature of such a classic movie. This kovie is more about reincranation of Rishi's character to take revenge of his murder and give justice to his mother&sister from his previous birth.

This movie 'Karj' (Debt) is inspired from 'The Reincarnation of Peter Proud' [If I am not mistaken, its a late 60s movie]. Peter starts remembering his past life and there are glimpses of some gestures, some tunes that recur throughout the film slowly form a bg for the script to evolve.
Here, as is obvious from the song 'Ek Haseena ( a beautigful girl) thhee, ek diwana( her lover) thha, the lover is murdered by the villainous gold-digger who then goes off to throw his mom and sis out of the palatial estate house. He is born again and accidently plays the tune that awakens him to his past life. His mission to search for his home and family and repay the debt of love is fulfilled when he reaches this tea estate.
There are mistakes galore but the Indians are high on both Emotions and Forgiveness. So? So Karj became a great hit.
If you guys are doing a classic go for Pyaasa/ Kanoon/ Koshish/ Naya din nayi raat.. all pre 1974. many more on the list🙃
Nutan is a winner of about six filmfare awards for the best actress. Rishi came much later. Rick, if you see the movies that I suggested' see if you can ask your wife to explain the cultural aspects of that time in relation to the subject matter.

This song is the full story of the film... Rishi K is born again person ... A prince..killed by his gold digger wife... Who then has thrown out his mother , his baby sister... (Who is now a grown up woman with a kid of her own..) The song ...is being sung to trap Simi G. And finally reveal to her who Rishi K is and also tell the school run by the family's trust .. the real truth of the death of the Prince.
Karz has many hit songs that later became titles of many hindi films ...including Om Shanti Om.
Om Shanti Om is not a copy of Karz ...it is a copy of the Film Madhumati ... Starting Dilip Kumar and Vijayanthimala ....including the ending.

For classic month, I would highly recommend the following 2: 1. Dosti (1964), that is an absolute classic, a wonderful film and quite the tearjerker (Rick will definitely cry) 2. Mere Mehboob which is a classic romance and beautifully portrays the culture and refinement of Lucknow during the 50s and 60s. A very poetic movie. Good luck finding subtitled versions!

I think this movie is classed as a parallel or art movie at the time.
And then 18 years later there was Karzzzz.
This film was a very, very loose adaptation of the Hamlet story in a way. And if you look at it that way, this song is then the 'reveal', in the play within the play in Hamlet. The Bulbul song from Haider. Only, here it comes in the climax.
