So thankful for your review! I bought the Blacksmith amPlug 2 Fly about a week ago and have been using it since. But only until watching your vid have I discovered all of it's capabilities. What an awesome product and overall review.
@@onurag7176 Got one today. Really good especially for the price. Sounds so similar to my ID core 10 blackstar. The clean channel has a really nice crunch when driven and the crunch channel goes to a pretty heavy OD. The Distortion channel isn't really my thing as it's a bit fizzy for my taste but I find most distortion is. In built FX are good 3 settings on each with the 3rd being a bit too much FX for me. Can't fault it for a easy portable practice headphone amp.
Your video recensions and presentations are really good! In this case, I not only see a rebranded Vox amPlug 2 series model, but I also have the strong feeling to hear my Vox amPlug2 AC30...
Hey, I'm deciding between this and the AC30 amplug2, which do you think would be better sounding? This one doesn't have enough gain to play Metal but I feel can play Lead better than AC30, AC30 sounds more apt for a Strat/Tele Tone right?
Hello. thanks for the review. I have a question about this item. How can I record from the Blackstar amPlug into garage band? How were you able to record the sounds of the Black Star amPlug 2fly onto the computer?
You would need an audio interface and a headphone out to 1/4" cable. I have the cable I used linked in the description. Here is the connection Guitar-Amplug-audio interface-computer. The audio interface usually connects to your computer via USB.
Dude! You really helped me. You doing a demo on all 3 fx for the chorus , delay and reverb presets helped me to differentiate more clearly. Thanks. Quick question. I imagine when it starts the effects...chorus is first and then delay and so on. However, when u get the one beep, then two and finally 3 for one effect...i press again and get 1 beep. Is that just automatically going to the next effect or starting over again in the same field? Cheers man.
You are probably better off going with the Vox amplug 2 metal: ua-cam.com/video/2V_KBkTwamY/v-deo.html or If you have a little more, you can go with the Fender Mustang Micro: ua-cam.com/video/PW9Tr2fNfj4/v-deo.html
This looks just like the Vox amplugs. I was rather unhappy with those and gave them away. Is this maybe the same maker just with sound tweeks and the blackstar logo?
They have some functions that are arranged differently, but I think they are the same in terms of build (maybe produced by the same manufacturer). If you didn't like the vox models, you probably won't like this one. The closest comparison to the blackstar would be the vox classic rock.
Hi! thanks for the video but I would like to ask you something. I bought the exact same Blackstar Amplug, but it seems like I cannot hear anything when I plugged in my headphone to the amplug. I turned on the plug and set up the channels but it seems I can't see any difference from with or without the amplug. Do I need special headphone for it or can I just use my normal headphone? Thanks a lot!
Both are good options, but personally I would choose the Vox Amplug 2 clean. It has a nice clean tone, can do some gain on the red channel, and I prefer how the tone wheel functions. I could never get used to the ISF tone wheel control on the blackstar, which doesn't function how you would think a regular tone control would.
Yes. It should work with an electric-acoustic guitar. You could even plug it into a bass, but I don't know if it would sound the best. It should at least sound decent if you keep it on the clean setting and just use the effects. Not sure how it would sound with added gain.
I've been looking a couple headphone amps and I've narrowed it down to this or the vox classic rock. Tbh I'm leaning toward the vox more but when i read reviews it says the build is weak and it breaks after some months. Can you or someone else scrolling through the comments help me decide?
Hi, first of all thanks for making this video, very useful! I bought the amplug but there's one thing I don't get.. how do you change between effects 1/2/3? I feel like I always get one type of chorus/delay/reverb without the variations
Thank you so so much for the review! That’s very helpful. And I really like how the clean channel sounds. Having tried both amplugs, which one do you like better?
The blackstar amplug is definitely more flexible than the vox amplugs, but personally, I would want something that I can just plug in and play. The blackstar is good for people that want the options, but if you just want something you won't be fiddling with that has good tones, the vox amplugs are the way to go. If you like the blackstar for flexibility and value, I would also check out the valeton rushhead max. I recently came upon it and it seems to have the most versatility of any headphone amp I have seen. Plus, it can be charged via usb, which I definitely like. Will be doing a review of that as well haha.
Thanks for your reply! You helped me with a month and a half dilemma. I’m mainly looking to get a versatile headphone amp and maybe an irig HD2 , so I could experiment with different sounds and settings, I also found some really cool free apps like Tonebridge that one could use it with. But my devices are almost obsolete and I’ll be slightly exceeding my budget. I just googled the Venton one and it seems like exactly what I wanted. So I’ll be looking forward to seeing its review too :D. I’m not even a beginner yet, and kinda felt overwhelmed by the amount of things that I absolutely have no clue about. So I really appreciate your help and the clarity of your videos. Really high quality content. I’m glad I discovered your channel. :)
If you are looking into the irig HD2, you probably don't need the blackstar. The irig is a pretty portable audio interface as it is and the free software that you can use with it will have more than enough tones to experiment with. I would only get headphone amps if you want that extra portability to practice away from your other devices.
I don't know about that. I think you would be able to connect it to the irig hd2 and connect that to the phone, but I don't know if you can connect it directly to the phone.

Thanks for the review, really helpful! I just ordered one of these, was a toss up between the Blackstar and the Vox Amplug 2 Blues as they both have the tones I'm looking for. A guy at the place I bought it from reckons these are pretty much the same product - having reviewed them both, do you see any differences between these models? (Blackstar vs Vox Blues - would make a nice comparison video to tease out any variations).
Hey Matthew. Glad it was helpful. I assume all these Amplug 2 headphone amps are probably made from the same 1 or 2 manufacturers. But I would say the main distinction for the blackstar is that the presets on the 3 channels are very different (clean, crunch, lead) whereas the Vox models are slight variations of their target tone. I would say the blackstar is more similar to the Vox classic rock model. To my ears, the blues model's tone has a little more mid range warmth to it.
@@GrowWithGuitar So, I’ve been playing around with this for a couple of days. It is very versatile, using the three distinct channels combined with the gain control. The reverb is not half bad on settings 2 and 3, and you can forgive it not being quite as authentic a sound as a real spring reverb. The chorus and delay aren’t much use to me as they can’t be combined with reverb (so far as I can tell), making the sound too dry through headphones. But they are fun to mess around with. I think my main problem is a lack of proper tone control, or presence. On my t-style guitar, the single coil bridge pickup sound is rather unusable through headphones, way way too much treble! My neck humbucker works much better, and I think this is where the lack of mid range really hurts this little amp. I’m not sure what that middle ISF dial is doing, but I think it would be much more effective if it gave a wider dynamic sweep, like a standard tone control. As I bought this mainly to use with a HH guitar, I think it’s going to be OK, but I think I may have been better going for one of the Vox iterations with, as you say, more focus on one target sound.
It does suck that you can't combine the effects, but I will be reviewing the Valeton Rushead Max headphone amp in the coming weeks, which is able to do that. Although you don't have controls over the effects like you would in pedals, it is definitely more versatile in comparison to other headphone amps. Also, you are right, the ISF tone works a bit different than a regular tone control, like the Vox headphone amps have, and I think it can differ based on the guitar and pickups. I also was using humbuckers. Maybe I will buy a single coil guitar again sometime in the future. I miss my old strat 🙁
I will be trying this amp should the USPS deliver it someday soon. Now, what do you think of the Blackstar Fly 3 portable amp? The battery-powered one? Have you tried it?
I haven't tried it personally, but from the videos I have seen, I wouldn't recommend it. Personally, I don't think any of the mini amps are worth it and I am not planning on reviewing them. I would rather save up for a decent budget amp instead. The reason I recommend headphone amps is because it is budget friendly, portable, and can get people to play right away without having to think about other gear like cables.
If you want to use the headphone amp to play along with a drum track, you can connect the headphone out of the laptop into the aux in of the headphone amp. You could do the same with your phone or anything else. Here is the cable you would need for that: amzn.to/3kKzxEA (affiliate)
Hey bruh. This could be a good alternative to a normal amp when starting out, especially if you don't want to spend $100-300 on a normal amp in the beginning. If you get this, you also wouldn't need to buy a guitar cable to start.
Cheap amps will normally sound bad, so saving for a decent amp is advised. If you have a limited budget, focus it on the guitar and get this kind of product so you can practice while you save for a better amp and yes, like mentioned in other reply, you can connect an Aux cable to the headphone output and connect the other end to a speaker
The main difference is that the blackstar's 3 channels are clean, crunch, and lead. If that sounds like something you would want, then the blackstar. If you want something that has good tones that you just plug in and play, then getting the vox isn't bad either and on some of the models you can get both clean and crunch tones, you just have to fiddle with the controls a bit more.
