I think saying that you "don't need to take fake tough guys seriously" is misguiding people. A fake tough guy can throw a punch or a kick, just like anybody else. No matter how corny a person is, you should always take everyone seriously and avoid getting into an altercation, whenever avoidable.

Precisely. Just because someone isn't trained, doesn't mean they can't be a threat. Anyone can throw a haymaker, and as we've seen with situations like the Tongo Tong ambush on US. SF in Nigeria - even the untrained can get lucky with the element of surprise. Respecting your enemy, even if they're wearing sandals in a warzone & thinking Allah will guide their bullets, will help keep you breathing.

I could be wrong, but I believe the point of this video is that you can talk down, walk away from or evade "fake tough guys" whereas a real tough guy would simply strike.

@@chrisbuffalo5866 The victim had to use violence to finally get the "tough guy" to stop on more than one instance. Talking down "tough guys" is only sometimes possible. A person who really wanted to do harm would be more direct. It is almost what you said but you don't have to be tough to do damage. There are people who can really dish out damage but can't take it in equal measure.

I’ve followed this channel for years and I have to say, this is really bad advice. Anybody who is posturing, using threatening language should be taken seriously. It only takes half a second for them to flip. Just make sure you’re doing the right thing, de-escalation tactics, hands in front of you looking non threatening, maintain a relatively safe distance and be loud about not wanting to fight, if they step forward from that point and everyone has seen that you’ve tried to defuse, be very violent, very quickly and make sure they don’t bang their head on the floor

I'm usually a big fan of your work, but I think your message in these "fake tough guys" videos can be dangerously misinterpreted (and the way you phrase things you're partly to blame in this) :
Basically, what their body language indicate is that they are in a ritualistic form of agression (unlike the career criminal and the sociopath). Well, yeah, but it doesn't mean those guys aren't dangerous ! Most fights involve inebriated men doing the "alpha male dance", but if it last long enough, the attack can be triggered (if only to save face). Now I understand what you mean to say but it can easily be heard as "oh, his chin is up and he removed his jacket so it means he's a fake tough guy, he won't attack, I have nothing to worry about".
I'd prefer people to think, more simply, that all agressive people MIGHT attack and prepare accordingly.

I got into an argument with a guy and his wife several years ago in the bar of a caravan park in South Wales. He wanted to 'go outside' while I had no intention of getting into some infantile fight over nothing. In between trying to de-escalate the situation I asked a member of staff to call the police, which he did. When they showed up about 15 minutes later he tried to get all matey with them, while his wife groomed their children on what to say to the police. In the end it all calmed down and everyone went back to their caravans.
Next morning I was thanked by all the staff for remaining calm. As for the other family, they were kicked off the park, even though the day before was their first day and had booked a two week holiday there, which would have cost them about £1200. Oh well...

Two options. You stand to the side completely, which will allow him to pass. If not then you split the motherfucker because you don't let anyone put their hands or shoulder on you! 2. You just stop and stand there, he'll have to walk through you or around you but you stand your ground. This can be more provocation to see how you react. Then walk away thinking you are scared of them and you have made a point. To getting close in your face, finger pointing, shouting, or grabbing.

Fake tough guys can be dangerous as well. In the first clip, like in most cases. Alcohol being involved, made the man more prone to violence. In that situation, I would of bladed my stance and had my guard up. Pushed him off with my left, and said "You don't wanna do this, while staring him in the eyes". If he chose to enter my punching range once again after being warned, I would of jabbed him and blasted him with a right over the top. If he goes down, get out of there before the cops show. If you are arrested, make sure to say you feared for your life and had no way to escape and you were unable to run because you hurt your ankle earlier in the week. You never let another man get that close to you in an altercation, a punch you don't see coming can put you in the hospital.
Even former UFC champ BJ Penn was knocked spark out in a street fight with 1 punch. A fight that can still be seen on UA-cam for reference.

I see a lot of comments saying that this is bad advice because you should take everyone seriously. The message I got from this video was to get a better read on the difference between “fronting” aggression and imminent attack.
In the real world there is a difference in how you respond.
For the latter, you are better off with a preemptive strike - you deem your safety at imminent risk and it’s a legally justifiable use of force.
For the former, you stand a good chance of being able to talk then down, maybe by feeding their ego, apologising etc. Better chance of a safe exit.
In both cases you treat them seriously, maintain distance, move into space, keep your hands ready etc.

    • @mackychloe

"a legally justifiable use of force" is tricky to prove in court without witnesses or video evidence proving that the other guy was the aggressor.

A pre-emptive strike will put you in jail most places, especially if there's video.

    • @lukedavis569
      @lukedavis569 2 роки тому

Point taken folks. You’d have to go to court to argue the case, assuming police got involved (which typically depends on where and when it occurs - fights outside pubs at kicking out time, not so much… shopping centre at lunch time, likely).
I would like to say that in UK law at least, you are allowed to strike first with reasonable force if that is to prevent an imminent crime, including assault on yourself. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-defence_in_English_law
The difficulty is in the nuance of whether a jury would be convinced you were in danger, so yes it is a risk, and one you have to make a split decision on.

    • @-WiseGuy-
      @-WiseGuy- 2 роки тому

      No, man!
When someone encroaches toward you repeatedly in an aggressive fashion, you FUCKING DROP HIM! Being attacked is no joke, and you should NOT EVER treat ANY aggressor as if they are not a real threat, you have no idea how far they are willing to go.
There's even a perfect example on UA-cam of a drunk old man cutting a bunch of people up with a blade because none of them fully realized it was happening in the adrenaline of it all, and they didn't want to just drop him, AS THEY SHOULD HAVE!

I always walk away thinking i almost got my ass kicked. Obv I never want to fight and try to avoid but when in a corner or back against a wall I have bluffed and been super lucky. I think it’s because most people who know how to fight would never start a fight with anyone unless forced to. And I never have forced anyone and try to avoid

Or they have a weapon. If it’s not worth getting killed or protecting a loved one from harm then it’s probably not worth fighting over so suck up your pride and do your best to leave if at all possible. Getting physical is a last ditch effort and the cost is extremely high so you better ask yourself is this worth getting killed over or possibly go to prison over? If you can’t say yes do everything in YOUR power to walk away unharmed and not harming another. Don’t let anger and pride over rule that!

Great analysis, Sifu Phillip. I think that the expression "tough guy" it's pursued nowadays as it was an accolade, a compliment, a medal to be pinned on a puffed chest; and since the e-media provides such a large glistening illuminated stage that can be reached just in seconds, people let their insecurities and pride surface in a chase for those 15 secs of fame, to fill a much deeper void inside. However, Sifu, I disagree with you in not taking a fool's show off seriously. I've been in many street fights, also professionally and just defending myself for having been a fool too. Shi* has no fixed boundaries; and come from any and everyone. Never call someone's bluff... You'll be surprised. Avoid, but be ready to act.

Back in the 90's there was more unprovoked violence. Nowadays the majority are just ACTING tough when they're not. You still need to be careful but most of them are a little kid in an adult body throwing a tantrum and stamping their feet... I see it a lot in pubs.. they've been asked to leave and they do eventually. I can actually predict them.

Real world instance: I cursed out a guy slinging racial slurs at some folks last summer, he departed from his buddy and ran up to me, asking repetitively who I was and, like the guy at 3:28, asked if I voted for Biden. Even though we were both Canadians in Canada with no bearing whatsoever on U.S. politics (not that it should even matter), it's the mind of an insecure person with stewing anger, fed and distracted by fear-mongering television. I de-escalated (despite being the instigator). Just an interesting thing to notice, how people will project their insecurities and hateful spirit through something as trivial as the theatre of politics, and how it manifests into real-world aggressive behaviour.

Hands in pockets he may be planning a head butt. I always also look at people's shoes to see if they are any good for fighting in, and also to see if their footwork is any good. I have friends joke about the way I leap around when I'm physically active, but it's because I'm always practicing solid footwork. For example I never bend down to pick things up, I always look like I'm doing a manga power up! "Make your fighting stance your normal stance and make your normal stance your fighting stance." Can't remember the source - A Book of Five Rings possibly. Heard Seagall mention it the other day.

That "remember my name" part is very often a sign of real danger. And believe me, it can be said in the most throwaway way. Ten years of cab driving is my resume on that one. Once they say that, I always back down. I act impressed. If they're not really anyone notable, you're only pretending too. If they are someone notable, you made the right move. It's never the wrong move to play it safe. From a psychological point of view, they are craving respect. Just dollop it out and move on. When you are well mannered back it projects confidence and can actually make them notch it down. Then find out who they are quietly so you know where it's going if you meet them again.

To be clear, there are fighters and talkers. I'm 5'4" 140# - every street fight I was in, I'd try to de-escalate the situation (brains over brawn). However, about 10% of the time you realize the shit talker is not going to let things go, as it were. That is when I would implement my #1 rule of self preservation. Strike while he's talking. He talks shit and immediately gets hit. Usually in a fashion that ends the encounter, i.e. Solar plexus , throat or nose. Doesn't really make you feel any better in the morning, unless, of course you just let them have at you the night prior. Real fighters will not talk much, they'll just kick your @ss.

Fights they start with bad language and bad intentions NOT when someone is trying to defend himself or stand up for himself. Anyone has the right to stand up for himself and defend himself. Back when I was 24 and in different environment (country) I took my shirt off because I knew I am just about fight 3 guys, so my nice (expensive) shirt wouldn't get damaged.
Needless to say, I didn't end up good. Got two guys alright but got my 2 front teeth damaged when the third guy blindsided me.
BTW, I was with my new wife on honeymoon and we were about to get robbed by those guys - just for those who would want to say that I should not have fought.
I spent the rest of my honeymoon with everyday dentist visits where they saved them. But it was ugly.

I don't get the sense that the narrator/content creator is saying that a person's body language, posturing, tone of voice, et al can be read so as to provide 100% positive proof of an aggressor's intent; one should always be wary of the other guy, especially if it's in a situation where the other guy seems to have downed a couple shots of "liquid courage" too many...which in my experience tends to be a prevailing factor.
If some guy is talking smack about kicking your ass, what he's gonna do to your face, assuring you that you have no idea who you're fuckin' with, et al...what he is, in effect, doing is offering you a chance to back down, giving you an "out," as it were. If all someone wants to do is kick your ass, they're not gonna stand on ceremony and spend 20 minutes lauding his physical prowess...he's just gonna throw hands.
Usually the guy wants to just look like "The Dude You Don't Wanna Mess WIth," either to stroke his own ego, look tough for his buddies...whatever. If anything, they'd like to establish that without having to consumate it by throwing hands. Most bar fights are simply the result of two guys with something to prove who refuse to back down until one or both parties feel they've left themselves with no choice.
Tangent to that: like a dog sniffing around for the scent of fear, tough guys will often be attempting to feel you out, gauge what threat you may possess based on your reactions; at least enough to try and avoid writing a check with his mouth that his ass can't cash.
The caveat there being that if they read your attempts to de-escalate or back away as evidence that you not wanting to fight means you **can't,** and then go off.
The one bit of tough-guy bravado that actually makes sense-- even if not the way they want it to-- is that you actually/literally **NEVER** know who you're fucking with; you know nothing about them, what they might try to do, et al. Personally: I prefer to maybe offer a couple of mild mea culpas...then say little to nothing. Don't give them anything they can go somewhere with. That will often frustrate them, or make them think *"Hmmm...maybe there's a reason why he doesn't seem very worried about me..."*

  • @karatearmchairhistorian9825

When someone behaves aggressively toward me, regardless of the movie tough guy crap coming out of their mouth, I assume 2 things.
    1. They intend to kill me.
    2. They can, if I let them.
So, I'm always ready for what's coming.
If they were just trying to show off for their girlfriend, that's a shame, because my response won't be based on that. It will be based on those two reasonable assumptions outlined above.
I'm still here, and have never been arrested for the way I defend myself.

Never walk backward! First, your opponent can move forward faster than you can retreat. Second, it's a sign of weakness and will likely embolden your adversary. Third, you can easily trip over something and end up on your ass. It's much better to get up on your toes and use lateral movement. This makes the aggressor adjust to you and it serves as a warm-up while you evaluate his intentions, timing, and tendencies.

Next: How can we defend ourselves against such psychological attacks particularly if we are advancing forward? Here's one way in terms of how: we need to recondition ourselves particularly in relation to our we perceive the cues of violence. In otherwords we need to think this while we advance forward that that which appears to be a submissive gesture or retreat could be the retreat tactic or a wile or attack disguised with the guise of retreat; particularly so we do not become defensively complacent or so that we can advance forward with caution.
That's one way in terms of how.
We recognise a tactic and then we find ways to defend ourselves from our own discovery. Which is why for every technique I invent i find a counter for it. Always have an antidote for every poison you invent!
