I always shoot my clients headshots at f2.8 but couldn’t figure out why I was losing details in the face like the nose and lips. Now I know and can’t make the proper changes lol Thank you so much for these photography gems!

Your model is gorgeous!.. In studio I usually shoot around f8. I will try around f5.6 on my next session.... also I will try out my 90mm macro lens (Tamron), I've never used it for portraits before, so thanks for the tip.
Thank you Bob! f8 is like the universal standard for studio shoots i think! But i want to know, what were you using the macro lens for? or what do you primarily use it for and what lens do you easily grab for portraits..
@@Phloshop I do use the 90mm macro for macro photography, but I also heard that a macro lens is also good for portraits as it is nice and sharp. My go to lens for portraits is usually my 50mm f1.4 prime, but in studio I like the flexibility of my 24-105mm f1.4.
Oh wow. I appreciate it. Thanks for joining the family. I know other photographers even shoot at f22 so I guess it depends on each photographer.. but with the knowledge you can choose to work with the options you have
If you follow anyone shooting with macro lens those high apertures are the norm. Macro lens allows you to get closer but depth of field increases meaning even at 5.6 not everything will be in focus.
@@The_Idea_of_Dream_Vision I was referring to portraits…..u have to use high aperture at least f8, so that everything is in focus when shooting macro! I shoot macro

Absolutely gorgeous model, but I digress. Excellent video of depth of field. I mostly shoot headshot @ f7.1, except dramatic looks, maybe f4 to 5.6 for a dreamy look. Thanks for sharing.
The Best Video I have seen on you tube this week! I am surprised about the clarity of detail using F14 on a Canon R6. Joseph if I remember you went from Canon 6D to EOS R and now Canon R6. I am just wondering if the image will be even more sharper on R5 with the extra megapixel. Thanks for posting.
Hey... do not underestimate the r6 lol.. but yes I did go from 6D to the R and now the R6. Yes they image will appear to be sharper because it has double the information that comes from the R6. That’s crazy detail I’m not ready to deal with lol
It is definitely sharper on the R5. I have the R6 as well.. However if the models skin is not that great sharpness will not be your friend. LOL I shoot my headshots with the rf 85 1.2 and it’s sharp enough on both cameras to create more post work at f8.
@@pianofinger that’s crazy.. I wonder what those who shoot with 100megapixel medium format cameras go through. Really nice setup you have.. I’m just waiting to see if sigma will release RF lenses... the canon lenses are VERY expensive
Interesting. If i am shooting against a plain backdrop then shooting shallow is really not necessary. I however like to shoot shallow when i have interest in my backdrop just to add depth...
Thank you for your help with the aperture settings. I've been experiencing disappointment during my photo shoots because around 30% of my photos are out of focus. I usually shoot with the EOS R handheld in the studio at apertures between F1.4 and 1.8. I've decided to change to F5.6 to reduce the number of out-of-focus shots. I've been aiming for a blurry background, but it's been causing issues. What autofocus mode would you recommend for studio work with the Canon EOS R?
you are welcome. I almost always use eye AF as i am 95% of the time photographing people. There is a difference between shallow depth and out-of-focus, are you certain of what the issue is? if you want a blurry background, you have to increase the distance between your subject and the background. You also have to use a long lens at least starting from 50mm. You also need a fast lens, 1.4, 1.8 or even 1.2
you definitely can. And because it is a crop sensor camera, you can even get away with using a nifty fifty if you're adapting or use the sigma 56mm lens if you have that.
The macro feature just allows you to get insanely close to your subjects. but yes 85mm and longer have more compression which also help you get a broader depth due to the length, helping you get more of your subject in the focus plane.. if that makes sense
Oh that makes sense.. have you tried the new enhance feature the Adobe added to camera raw? Let me know if it affects your raw images positively cus it should increase the size by 4x
Good teaching. It depends also on the format of the Sensor... and the focal lens... Most photographs like to blur out the background, which I don't like, and get the subject unsharp. I was wondering when I opened my lens to 50mm 1.8 ... and the ears were missing... I was correct to shoot with F8 and a focal length of 50mm which is 75 for full-frame... Next time I will try with 30mm F1.4 with my second-hand Sigma (only $150)...
Thanks for the great video. I was wondering, what do you have your white balance set to for these studio shots? Are you set to flash or do you dial in a specific kelvin value?
