This game is very hard, fun, and immersive. I find the information warfare to be the most difficult part, as I have managed to stumble into strike groups, carrier groups, and missile carrier groups, and by error or accident I occasionally alert the whole of Gerat to my presence. The Imperial Fleet will reach Khiva, someday!

Hearing the ELINT go from 1 to literally giving you seizures as it starts buzzing and every single bearing lights up, your INRED looking like it's a heart monitor of somebody with a stroke, the radio beeping all the time with new transmissions, then hearing the intercom from ''Heat signature detected'' to ''Alert: Visual Contact'' in a mere 2 seconds, then having to fend off 6 missiles and a squadron of planes as you have no AAM and then if you somehow still have ships you need to battle with the strike group as Tanc a Lelek starts playing in the background. Truly a Highfleet exclusive experience
When I hear that song I know that my game is to its end.
FYI to non-CH players: any comparison to Chromehounds customization is high praise.
This looks kinda like dieselpunk Homeworld, which I'm all about, and the landing mini-game reminds me of the arcade Lunar Lander.

"Airships: conquer the skies" is a similar game where you design airships you use in combat. The campaign is bit more of a grand strategy game, you look at the world map the whole time and you send out fleets to conquer towns and cities.
Been looking at that game, I might pick it up this Steam sale.
Wait, a modern game with an actual manual? A /real/ manual, not just a basic listing of keyboard controls? I thought that art had been lost!
I'm not really convinced by the battle system. It doesn't "sell" me on its gameplay the feeling that I'm controlling a fleet. I think with a combat system like in HW: Deserts of Kharak or Wargame: Red Dragon it could convey this immersion much better than with one that reminds of Luftrausers.
That being said, I find the game absolutely fascinating.
I feel the same in some regards. Only being able to pilot a single ship vs. 3 enemies does limit the game in that aspect. No huge 'fleet' battles. If you want to play a game that does an excellent job of feeling like you are just one ship in a huge fleet, check out a game called 'Starsector'. It's really, really good.
But I also have a ton of respect for Highfleet being the game that it is, just oozes personality.
Absolutely get the game Starsector. It's the best fleet command game I've ever played, and one of my all time favorites.
I guess the fleet command elements are more concerned with the strat map anyway, in my experience you’re either raiding or fighting larger ships as a rule, so the feeling of weaving your way through superior firepower to ‘punch above’ the weight of your ships makes sense to me.
Your real fleet vessels (carriers, missile frigates etc) really shouldn’t be in combat. Even the cruisers only fight when everything else has gone wrong. It’s more a piracy+ guerrilla fleet sim than straight fight sim most of the time.
Agreed, if your command ships are fighting then either you have stopped caring about stealth or you are in a bad situation. A command ship is expensive to repair and hard to land. It’s arrival means that every strike group in the world is about to start acquainting you with nuclear fire.
Yeah agreed, unfortunately coding the very complex AI to make somewhat decent large starsector esque fleet battles is probably beyond the I believe single or two man development team, on top of everything else. Unfortunate that smaller games like this can’t ever be given the financial rewards they deserve. This certainly deserves it more than others do.

Damn, the Hotdog and Veggiedog types remind me of some of the lite tankers I've tried to come up with- though I daresay they're much cheaper, hah! Excellent review, man, well-edited and very well articulated, and exactly why I like this game- you really do feel like a desperate commander, or else a very sweaty crewman!

If you enjoy your modifying and taking your ships into battle have you tried airships conquer the sky? But do yourself a favour and don't just look it up on UA-cam the most recent video is. The game is about to drop it's huge diplomacy overhaul and is very much to learn active development complete with steam steam workshop support for ships and individual weapons engines armour.

Looks cool but I can't help but side with the Republic on this, being an Imperialist for a formally fascist nation is fucking cringe, and makes me think these two developers are super nationalist. They should, instead, give players the option to play either side.
Wew, hot take coming through. If you think the game looks cool, I'd suggest picking it up and trying it out. That's a lot to assume about the devs without actually playing the game.
The game does a great job storytelling and having you make difficult decisions along your journey, leaving you to decide what is right or wrong.
Being able to play both sides would be cool, but that'd be an entirely new campaign they would have to make. For a tiny dev team, it's a pretty amazing game as is
Nothing wrong with nationalism. Every nation was imperialist as well. Chinese, russians, indians, african tribes, the ottomans, huns, or vikings could be described as imperialist. The usa actually hasnt taken over any developed countries actually which is pretty funny
