Worth remembering two of the forwards from that series who died tragically young. Mike Gregory, who came on as a sub in this game, died from motor neurone disease aged 41 and Roy Powell who started the first test and was a sub in the second died of a heart attack aged only 33. He was still a player / assistant coach at Rochdale.
As of February 2022, all of the 1990 Kangaroo touring squad are still alive thankfully. Only coach Bob Fulton (2021) and trainer/runner Brian "Sheriff" Hollis (2002) have since passed away. All other staff (to my knowledge) including Shaun McRae (assistant coach/trainer), Dr. Nathan Gibbs, Les Stokes (Manager), Johnny Lewis (trainer), Frank Ponissi (physio/stats/bus driver) and Keith Barnes (Manager), are still alive. RIP to Mike Gregory and Roy Powell.
That's just a classic Australian RL shirt isn't it? Simple and not decorated like an advertising billboard, just one sponsor. Same as the GB shirt. Bring back collars!
This series was one of the best ever - all three Tests were belters. The amount of points Mal Meninga scored for Australia in his career is amazing, and he's probably the best centre overall to have ever played for Australia. But his goalkicking....absolutely atrocious. He's the worst goalkicker I've ever seen for any international team of any country. I wonder what his points tally would have been if he'd had the kicking skills of Jonathan Thurston, 🙂
Daryl Powell and Carl Gibson at centre, surely we had better. Loughlin? A young Newlove? Lydon? Darren Wright? Andy Courier? And Kelin Skerratt, Karl Fairbank and Brendan Hill in the pack?
Australia's defence was just about perfect, but poor old Andy Gregory was playing just about a lone hand in this match. When Garry Schofield went for his intercept, Mal Reilly was coming down to the Lions bench at the time. His assistant Phil Larder in the stand could only watch in horror. Schofield had been told before the game by both Reilly, Larder and his Leeds coach David Ward, and it was apparently re-told to him at half time, to not do his usual thing of racing out of the line for an intercept because unlike British club sides, if it didn't come off the Aussie's had the players to exploit it ... which is exactly what happened. Cliff Lyons drifted across and sent Mal Meninga back inside right where Schofield would have been had he stayed in the line. The Kangaroos defence was near perfect, but that one moment put the game beyond Great Britain's reach in the conditions. And I don't think Schofield would have scored had he got the ball. Dale Shearer was right with him and no way would Schofield have out-run Rowdy.
@M rugby league is the greatest sport on Earth with over 4 Billion fans and massively popular in over 240 countries including dependencies. soccer/football is only popular in 4 countries. Its a minority sport in the UK, France etc. rugby league will always be the number 1 sport in Australia
Graeme Hughes was the most anti Australian Australian commentator I ever heard. Benny Elias and Steve Roach were capable of the biggest bonehead plays imaginable.
If Meninga had of kicked straight, it would have been embarrassing for gb! 14-0 doesn’t tell the story how the Roos overcame all the dirty play, mysterious refereeing decisions and uncharacteristic ball handling mistakes! No wonder Australia stayed dominant for the next three generations of international league.
It wasnt played in a magnificent spirit at all. In nearly all the tackles they made the British came in with punches, flops, knees in the back - not as an occasional thing but with regulatory , they were allowed to forward pass and run shepherd with impunity...no this wasnt played in a good spirited manner at all.
YES! I'd forgotten just how bad the ref was....sad thing is most French ref's all the same. Small wonder the game's almost dead there. Imagine watching that week in week out.
There is NOTHING great about this team. (Just watch the video). "LITTLE BRITAIN". Well they would have scored SOMETHING!!!!!! "GIRLS BRITAIN", Because they would have scored SOMETHING!!!. GIRLS Britain, because they "HAVE NO BALLS AT ALL", JUST WATCH THE VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!

Blimey I knew about Gregory But I never knew about Roy Powel, always gave his all for the team Thats young for a heart attack

Thanks for the upload . Missed this one but went old Trafford for 2nd test the weekend or two before , when Aussies won in the last minute.
Credit to you and thanks for this treat. Much appreciated.
crikey what we would give in the future to have a test series like this

Miss collars
I liked having a collar when I played. Kept the cold wind out.
Nothing will ever come back in our life time. It'll just keep getting worse.
Andy Gregory didn't mind a high shot or 3. Which is a bit strange since he's only 3 foot tall.
Cliff Lyons was such an underrated player to say the least.
up the almighty sea eagles. ; )
His drinking habits held himback
Geezus... who in their right mind would ever describe Cliff Lyons as underrated? Seriously... do you even know what that words means?
Underrated by who? What are you on about?
@@driffter1976 he should be an immortal buddy , that’s why.
Cliffy... fuggin legend !!!!
Never realised how good Sironen was!
One of big Siro's favourite plays was to bound into the defense with both knees pumping furiously as high as he could get them. QLD used to smash him.

Back in the days when a team was proud to be sponsored by coal miners. And Inspector Clouseau would try his hand at Rugby League refereeing...

Mal was pretty reliable right in front but everything else was an utter lottery.
Big Sirro led the assault on the poms, hanley in particular. 💪
My Man of the 1990 Series was Bob Lindner.
Surely Australia could have found a goalkicker up to Test standard... Meninga was woeful.
Bob Lindner had a great series.
Daryl Powell and Carl Gibson at centre, surely we had better. Loughlin? A young Newlove? Lydon? Darren Wright? Andy Courier? And Kelin Skerratt, Karl Fairbank and Brendan Hill in the pack?
Agree. I also can't believe Davies didn't start!
To much hope and not enough glory.
No hope = No glory.
No hope = No glory.
A very gladitorial contest, the British were violent, the Australians were powerful and proved too strong in the end.
Great test series. Easily the best British side I've ever seen. But for Eastwood's kicking in game 2, they would have won the Ashes.

@M obsessed 😂😂😂
@user-gu4tv4hp6stake 2 billion off China and India are shit at soccer.
Andy Gregory tried hard, but he just did not have the skills to match Ricky Stuart
The only skill that Andy Gregory displays is head high tackling.
Just a dam grub.
Gregory totally devoid of any skill except for head high tackles
In that era the French and English refs were shit
They are still today
Andy Gregory can't pass left to right.
Meninga is just a weapon.
Graeme Hughes was the most anti Australian Australian commentator I ever heard. Benny Elias and Steve Roach were capable of the biggest bonehead plays imaginable.
Roach and Elias are both proof you don't have to have a long neck to be a Goose.
I always thought Roach was just a trundler at Test level.
I'm not sure Tony Durkin wasn't actually Rodney Rude too
Benny Elias always ran rings around Queensland. The maroons had no answers to his bag of tricks.
I was there.
If the brits didn't put so much effort into doing the snide shit that they do, they'd probably win more games!!!!!!

It's been the same for half a century , When there is a "decider" the Aussies never look like losing. They did not in this one either.
Give it a rest , you tiresome turd .
Linesman keeping GB down to 12 men the aussies score typical
Great British or English? Commentator keeps saying English.

I blame the ref.
i thnk its the worst referring i've seen, the english off side high tackles, the aussies professional and disciplined.that ellery handley a bit loose
Yes that's what happens when you use a French ref.....just a joke!
How many times was there a knock on, the opposition immediately gather possession but he would not play advantage and insist on a scrum lol
Rugby league fights
Meninga great player but toe pokers didn't get goal kicking gigs long after this test series. absolutely horrible
Unfortunately no other options other than big Mal. No Michael O’Connor, no Rod Wishart. Plus Alexander stuck on the bench
Would have to be THE worst display of refereeing I haven seen, including the touchies. In all the tests.
YES! I'd forgotten just how bad the ref was....sad thing is most French ref's all the same. Small wonder the game's almost dead there. Imagine watching that week in week out.
More interested in over the top signalling and antics rather than staying out of it and letting the players play
this referee is a disgrace. he did not help either team.
What a totally inept performance by the frog ref.
The referee was simply abysmal
rotten referee...dirty game......i think the English are actually coached to play dirty.
