For anyone curious, if a chinchilla gets wet, the density of its soft, fluffy fur keeps moisture trapped and eventually grows into mould. This is why dry dust baths are used.
It's a different type of dust than the stuff that collects around the house. Chinchillas bathe in a volcanic dust, aka dust made of rocks. The dust around your house is mostly dead skin cells, which set off your autoimmune system. I have bad allergies to dust, but Chinchilla dust never seemed to bother me.
The dust around your house is not mostly dead skin cells. However, no one is allergic to dust. Instead, they're allergic to dust mites and/or bacteria that commonly lives in dust. If this dust doesn't support that bacteria or has been cleansed, you should have no issues.

My dad's friend had a Chinchilla. Those things are super difficult to take care of if I remember correctly. They die of depression really easily if you don't take care of them right.
You have to either have a pair or a partner for them. My friend had a rescued Chinchilla and since he didn't have another one he had it paired up with Degu that he had. Both are social animals so they bonded right away and were quite happy together and would chase each other around their large enclosure, cuddle up together and so on.

Apparently, not just any sand will do either. Pumice sand is best, because it is fine yet has a coarse, glassy texture (essentially being crushed volcanic glass). It's common in the Andes where chinchillas live in the wild. If you don't want the extra expense of buying pumice sand in the pet shop, fine river sand will do as well. Shouldn't keep the sand tub inside the chinchilla's cage constantly, though, and only put it in once or twice a day, since the little fellas are unfamiliar with the concept of toilet training and will crap in it same as they do everywhere else if left on their own.

There’s so many questions in the comments! Here’s a quick answer for you all too lazy to switch to Google and ask This is how ALL chinchillas bathe. This isn’t random dust, it’s a cleaning dust. If they get wet they basically grow mold and die. Being damp causes a bacteria to form since their fur is super soft and fluffy and that bacteria becomes a harmful mold to their skin. So the dust bath is a way for them to clean and remove moisture. Otherwise, they can LITERALLY grow mold and die, as escalated as that sounds.
Matthew Chavez yes that is completely right but it is still a dust. Like “dust of rock” is like ash. So they’re called dust baths. However when you go to the pet store there’s different names for the bath ranging from “dust” to “ash” but it’s all similar

This is probably the one thing my chinchilla loves most about her week.
I fill up her little bath house with dust and she immediately jumps in like a child to a sandbox.
Why do these creature roll around in dust? Does it not get into her eyes and nostrils? And what is this powder made of ?
@@selvamthiagarajan8152 The dust is what keeps the chinchilla clean!! When they roll around in it they close their eyes and move around super fast. It’s made of really fine dust that cleanses their fur and dirt off of it whilst also helping it evenly distribute natural oils!

@@selvamthiagarajan8152 Apparently in the wild chinchillas do this in volcanic dust/ash!! But you can buy special chinchilla dust for baths! LOL!!! it's made with pumice (volcanic rock). Its pretty wild and kinda funny but cute.

This is how ALL chinchillas bathe. This isn’t random dust, it’s a cleaning dust. If they get wet they basically grow mold and die. Being damp causes a bacteria to form since their fur is super soft and fluffy and that bacteria becomes a harmful mold to their skin. So the dust bath is a way for them to clean and remove moisture. Otherwise, they can LITERALLY grow mold and die, as escalated as that sounds.

Matthew Chavez yes that is completely right but it is still a dust. Like “dust of rock” is like ash. So they’re called dust baths. However when you go to the pet store there’s different names for the bath ranging from “dust” to “ash” but it’s all similar
