    It happens. Dad took out a power pole 4-5 years ago, best I recall. Wasn't as expensive as we thought. We've also had an incident with the planter marker arm pulling the neutral conductor off a pole, when it was being raised at the same time the tractor and planter were making a turn at the end of the field. That didn't cost anything, but some embarrassment.

    Brian, I'll see your pole and raise you a traffic light in New Jersey. Made a tight turn at night a few years ago and thought I was looking at the traffic light pole in the right mirror when I was actually looking at a sign pole. I took down the traffic light pole and laid the arm with the lights on it across the trailer.

    Important thing is at least no one got hurt, no major damage to the equipment so farming can continue. Good thing taking the precaution since it was live, shows how important to take precautions, just cause nothing looks scary doesn't mean it isn't dangerous!

    Hey Brian, with the drainage plow equipment you already own, why don't you consider to install an underground pipe to re route the electrical wire under your field and get rid of the over head wires in the field. (same idea as trenching in the electric line that you did at your house, except instead of trenching in the line, just the tile plow to bury a pipe below ground across the field. I had a similar situation and the electric company agreed that if I used their specified pipe that they would come after I installed it and run the new power cable through the pipe. Result is no more overhead lines and no obstacles for life in the field. (Just a suggestion).

    My guess is 2500-3k. Fuse had blown but the cutout door was hung up. Most likely line was not hot at that point however those older doors have been known to track. I applaud you for staying put. Smart move.

    Come on Brian! Only one pole? You can do better than that! I hung one when I was younger on stripper basket, not the guide wire, the actual overhead line,,, heard a bang, looked out to see the poles falling over, yes more then one. And it arched right as the wire snapped! Started the cotton in the basket on fire, which if you didn’t know cotton being fanned by a big blower will make it go up in flame fairly quick. It had about half a basket but wasn’t much left by the time I dumped it.

  • @keithfrazier2558

    Friend of mine got turned in front of, she swerved and lost control of her 2 year old Jeep Cherokee and took out a pole. Cost her insurance 4k and totaled her Jeep. I asked her if she learned anything, she said "Next time I won't swerve and I'll hit the pr*ck" I told her with all the safety equipment vehicles have, she put herself in more jeopardy then t-bone the car.
    Btw it was a country road and they had a stop sign, she didn't and it's only 35 though there. Just fast enough to chop off a pole after getting spun around backwards from swerving.

That’s when he was electrocuted said true story is about to get married the following week sitting in the tractor was a good move.

    I’ve done the same thing, with a combine one time, I was cutting wheat and I was on a head row and I was cutting against a power line and the grain tank caught just enough of the guide wire, and it brought the whole light pole down, and it started a fire and burned 5 acres of wheat

    I accidently tapped a power pole while driving a crawler tractor pulling a chisel plow when I was much younger. The lines flexed a lot, touching each other, arcing between lines, then everything finally settled down. So, I went back to plowing, giving the other poles a wide birth.

  • @bens8919
    @bens8919 2 дні тому

    Safety wise for this instance you would be fine, electricity goes to ground by the path of least resistance you have a big metal roller it would go to ground through it and not through you. When you should leap double footed is when the tractor is electrified say via the cab or cb antenna touching a low wire and you don't have an implement in the ground to create that pathway because tractors are on rubber tires (or tracks) if you step 1 footed and have one foot on the machine and one on the ground your boots are thinner than the tires and you become the path of least resistance. That said, its generally better to err on the side of safety if you are in any doubt

Luckily it didn’t break, but I watched the power lines buck all the way down for about a mile away from me and then it turned around and came back the whole mile and scared the crap out of me a second time.
