    It's funny, Hoseung's comment about how to sound more fluent in Korean reminded me of my experience studying French. I speak pretty good French but during one conversation with my French tutor who was a French professor from Paris he told me to use the word "alors" during my pauses. French speaking people, he said, would assume I was much more fluent than I was. I started to do so and soon thereafter my French colleagues were raving about my French.

      @@Manic_Panic It depends on where you are in America. In rural areas most houses will have access to a private well or spring, so the water is fine. City water, though typically cleaned and treated, can be a bit sketchy depending on the municipality. Even then, many, if not most, sinks and/or refrigerators have a built in water filter, so many Americans only buy bottled water for emergencies, traveling, or events. Obviously, I’m generalizing a bit, but I think, usually, Americans have easy access to fresh water without having to jump through too many hoops.

    We don't wear hair rolls outside because it is something you do at HOME, and it would be like going out wearing slippers and putting on normal shoes just after arriving at your destination, people would think you didn't have enough time to get ready or that you are lazy. So back in high school (in the US), I was at my friends house who is Korean (and I'm Chinese born in the US, so fairly Americanized, I think she came over when she was really young) and it was around dinner time so her mom asked if we wanted to stay for dinner (around 6/7pm) and eat with them. Dinner time was usually late at my house (around 10/11pm bc my mom had time-management issues 🤣aka master procrastinator) so I tried to be polite like that is okay. Well, I found out that you don't refuse a Korean mom's food and I stayed for dinner bc she made a feast. I didn't know what banchan was then so it looked like thanksgiving dinner with all the plates. 🥰But the thing that shocked me was that she laid out a mat in the living room with the tv off and started to put out food on the floor even thought she had a dinning table near the kitchen. I just thought to myself that she really wanted to have an in-door picnic in the living room or just wanted to eat in the living room but it was weird that the tv was off since the only reason to eat in the livingroom was to be able to watch tv. 🤣😅🤣 The other shocking thing was that all the food was bright red and I couldn't eat spicy food well. I almost died that day but I learned to take my spices well now. 😉
    Then there was another time I ate with my Indian manager at an authentic Indian restaurant and he was showing me the proper way that Indians traditionally eat and that's with your hands - you tear some naan and you use it to pinch up some rice meat covered in sauce basically. He said you grab it and basically your making a mini taco. LOL, go figure. It was tasty though. So tasty, I went back with out an Indian friend and all the Indians at the restaurant stared at my table.

    • @Grusha7
      @Grusha7 2 роки тому

      Omg!!! Lol.. The way u explained every process was hilarious. As an indian i hope u washed ur hands thoroughly before eating coz we eat mostly of roti, naan, with the veggies nd for that we mostly use hands.

Even if we don’t wear our shoes in the house, we still deem it as not the cleanest place to sit or lie down.

    In France, we mostly drink tap water but some drink filtered water (I do) or bottled. Also for the fan one, I thought you could catch a cold if you are too close to it when you sleep. I really hate people who make sounds when they eat especially eating with your mouth open, but it's mostly in our culture but personally,I like giving reactions when I eat something really good or refreshing (even in restaurants).

    • @nikkiparson7113
      @nikkiparson7113 2 роки тому +1

      Same here in the US. Eating with your mouth open and making noise comes off as obnoxious and rude to those around you. Expressing your enjoyment of the food or drink by way of complimenting aloud with words is never viewed as rude or obnoxious though. In East Asian culture though, people never tell strangers to stop eating so loudly though because it's a "keep to yourself" mentality. So there are still many people who do it.

  • @tpwk3321
    @tpwk3321 2 роки тому +3

    same thing in India when i visited they call the waiter out loud but in the states you have to wait and no yelling bc its seen as rude, but if you come to India feel free to just yell out, No worries!

    • @nikkiparson7113
      @nikkiparson7113 2 роки тому

      Yeah in the US it's considered rude cause it seems like you're talking "at" them instead of "to" them. For those who may not understand the difference, talking "at" someone is a similar energy of someone being lectured/scolded, or simply being belittling. This same negative inference comes from snappiing or whisling. NEVER snap or whistle at your server in a restaurant. People see it like you're treating them like a dog (slave). If people ever need to address something urgently though, feel free to get up from your table to speak with the first worker you come across or the hostess/host at the front. This is completely polite. And this is coming from someone who used to be in the industry for 7 years.

    Literally saw a girl in the subway wearing the bangs roller today, lol. I thought "Does... does she know? She didn't forget about it, did she?" Now I feel more confident that it was intentional. As for the tap water... As an American living in Seoul, I'm used to drinking tap water, but the tap water in my hometown was hard water (meaning it has lots of mineral deposits), and my family has one of those refrigerators with a water filter, so I always drank water from there. I drank the tap water here for several months because I don't like to buy bottled water, but it irritated my throat a little bit, so I bought a filtered water pitcher and have been using that instead.

    It my American household we also sit and watch tv when we eat…but it’s so frowned upon…I figure since we’re eating together it doesn’t matter where we eat, right?

    Even with bangs you won’t find anyone in my country using the rolls outside since it’s the mindset that you have to be already ready/dolled up when going out.

    A lot of Americans don't drink tap unless the water is purified because of how unsafe it is. We only use our sink for dishes, and we use the fridge for tap.

    Americans don't like to drink tap water because of all the old piping. We buy bottled water 95% of the time. Most businesses filter their tap water. That's why people are comfortable ordering it. My home has a water filtration system built into the water supply.

    아니 I think this is more of an Asian thing than being just a Korean thing.
    1. Shouting for the waiter. 아니 We do that in the Philippines too. But it's generally mixed these days, some just raise their hands especially when the place is too noisy (because if you shout your lungs out … well … haha)
    2. When there is something free people quickly fall in line. 아니 Same in the Philippines.
    3. Covering mouth when laughing. 아니 We Filipinos do that too, usually women.
    4. Wash hair daily. 아니 We do that too hahaha.
    5. Eating. 아니 There are cultures in Asia-Pacific where slurping your noodles meant you like their food, if you don't, it means their food was very bad.
    But yeah, here in the Philippines you should not slurp, it's fine when you're at home, but outside? People will stare and whisper, and if there are elders/seniors around, you'll get yelled at even in public. However, recently, that changed because of Korean food vloggers and K-dramas.
    As for being loud in giving compliments about the food … we don't do that intentionally. If it does taste good and different, we will give compliments quietly by talking to the owner or crew directly (or leaving tips). If we're in a large group, that's the only time we are loud.
    6. 아니 at the start of every sentence. In Singapore and Malaysia, they end their sentences with 'lah', 'leh'. Here in the Philippines, the closest is "po" (usually added after the verb) which is a word used to show respect.
    For example (English - Korean - Filipino)
    - Thank you = 고마워 = Salamat (saying it fast; or matter of fact; very casual)
    - Thank you = 고마워요 = Salamat (stretching it out; polite)
    - Thank you = 고맙습니다 = Salamat po (formal, respect level 1)
    - Thank you very much = 감사합니다 = Maraming salamat po (formal; respect highest level; it also means "thank you very much" [maraming salamat])
    - Thank you very much = 대단히 감사합니다 = Maraming salamat po (formal; respect highest level)
    - How old are you? = 몇 살이야 = Ilang taon ka na? (casual)
    - How old are you? = 연세가 어떻게 되십니까 = Ilang taon na kayo? (formal, respect level 1; when you are not sure if they are older; and in certain situations where we should be more careful)
    - How old are you? = 몇 살이에요 = Ilang taon na po kayo? (formal, respect highest level)

    From living in both America and travelling the world and now living in Korea I wouldn't' trust the tap water here at all unless it's a new building. The pipes in Korea are still very old and not safe in a lot of buildings. It's not uncommon to turn the faucet on after a few days away and the water comes out brown. Even in the showers almost every Korean has a filter because you can see it turn brown
