Thank you for reacting to Kevin's original music. He wrote this as well as performed it. He is classically trained and has been playing cello since age 6. He invented celloboxing (beatboxing while playing cello). To check out his looping skills and more of his cello playing, please check out "Down" and "Sign Of The Times" which are on his UA-cam channel. Everything on his UA-cam channel is amazing. .
As people have said, you should check out Kevin's cover of Down to see what he does with a looper. But you also really need to see him perform with Pentatonix. He isn't faculty. As has been mentioned, he was pre-med... when Scott cold-contacted him (because of a cello-boxing video that went viral) to ask if he would consider being the 5th member of their a capella group so they could audition for the 3rd season of The Sing-Off. Scott paid for his plane ticket, Kevin took his exams and flew to California... and the rest is history. Pentatonix won The Sing-Off and moved to LA the next week. That was 2011, the group celebrated their 10 year anniversary this past June. They've won three Grammys and Kevin said his parents still ask when he'll go back to medicine. Kevin occasionally plays cello in their songs and learned to sing along the way, even raps sometimes, but he's always the beatboxer of arguably the best a capella group there is. I'd recommend New Rules x Are You That Somebody (R&B a capella Timbaland beat where he and the bass were amazing), Gold (the official video was filmed live), their Daft Punk medley or one of their one-take live Evolution Of videos where they just sit in front of a black wall and do their thing. Evolution of Michael Jackson, Rihanna or Ariana Grande are my favorites... I'm drawing a blank on which gets the most comments on the beatboxing because he's crazy on them all. Maybe Rihanna.
Great intelligent reaction. Just so you know KO came in second at a contest Yo-Yo Ma put on, he played saxophone at Carnagie Hall his Sr. year of high school, plays multiple other instruments, speaks fluent Mandarin, served as a Jr. Ambassador to China, was pre-med at Yale before going to music full time, and oh "Can he rock a loop station?" go watch his cover of "Down", trust me you can thank me later. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
Kevin is the beatboxer for the grammy-winning acapella group Pentatonix. But check more of his stuff he does looping too! Highly recommend his cover of Down!
He does some astounding beatboxing in Pentatonix's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Daft Punk". But you might like his celloboxing in Radioactive done by Pentatonix and Lindsey Stirling, or their French "Papaoutai".
YESS...!!! OMG I am so Happy that you reacted to this and that you loved it. I screamed when I saw this And my family were looking at me like wtf just happened lmao 🤣😂 I told him " Everything was fine I just got excited" i got up went to my room and clicked so fast lol. If you want to React to more of him You can try reacting to him in an acapella group Call the pentatonix They are the BEST acapella group that I know. Thank you so much for this reaction you made my Night Night!
Research him he came in 2nd in one of Yo Yo Ma’s international Cello competitions. He also plays piano and saxophone and he was in the Yale (I believe) orchestra without beatboxing. He is not a beatboxer who plays cello he is a cellist who is also a great vocal percussionist
Yes, he's definitely on a totally different level than other beatboxers. Not saying the others don't also have talent though. Adam Rupp from Home Free has a nice voice (though he always prefers to sing backing harmonies and nothing solo). He also plays multiple musical instruments. Layne with Voiceplay has a really nice voice and can also be seen playing violin on one of their songs. But Kevin is on a different level musically. I've heard he has perfect pitch and sometimes will give the starting note on some of Pentatonix's songs so the rest can use it for a baseline. I also know he has performed at Carnegie Hall twice (once for jazz saxophone and once for classical cello) and also played with the cello section with the Yale Symphony Orchestra when he was in school there.
yeah i love this, this is awesome. and i think he is one of the personil from pentatonix, because his face is familiar. if im not mistaken. i love pentatonix. you should react to Pentatonix 😀
Loved your reaction, except for this part: "Yeah, I'm sorry, other beatboxers, go fuck yourselves." Spit my wine into my keyboard. May have snorted. But I loved your reaction. Please check out more of his work. "Down" is amazing (others suggested this) but also try Pentatonix "Coffee in Bed" or their Evolution videos to hear his beatboxing.
I mean... this is an amazing song. But to say "other beatboxers, go fuck yourselves" is a bit much, eh, since this isn't strictly beatboxing. Even he calls it something else: "celloboxing". Also, from a compositional standpoint, have you heard Gene? His wildcard from GBB 2021 is just incredible.
This is great, but the actual beatboxing is just boots and cats. There's nothing special to that. It's his instrument playing, timing, and singing that is impressive. Definitely trained professionally, like you said.
This was great. I do think beatboxers from the competitive scene have a lot of room for growth in other musical directions. I wish they also collaborated more with other musicians to step out of their musical bubble more. H-has&배다해 ( 인연 , Ave Maria ) from the Korean a capella competition Vocal Play is one collaboration I really enjoyed.

He also plays classical saxophone although he’s never played it in any PTX pieces.
he didn't invent it he learned it in china he said.
he was in competitions for it over there.
It's so good to watch someone who appreciates what Kevin has done here. Take a minute and watch his looping cover of 'Down', great skills.

True appreciation. Wonderful reaction to a mega-talent.

KO's cover of Marion Hill's "Down" will blow your mind!
Kevin is the beatboxer for the grammy-winning acapella group Pentatonix. But check more of his stuff he does looping too! Highly recommend his cover of Down!
truly enjoyed how articulate you remained even though you obviously were blown back - glad there are musicians like Kevin and you
Yes, he's on another planet. Welcome to KO's world. 😉
I love seeing a fellow cellist use such *spicy* chords
Esp pizzicato 🤌🏻
He does some astounding beatboxing in Pentatonix's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Daft Punk".

In case you didn't know, he's the beatboxer for Pentatonix!

Give a listen to Kevin's beatboxing in Pentatonix's official video of Coffee In Bed. Given, it is layered, but it is all Kevin. He is a beast.
THIS is my type of beatbox! So unique!
Love your reaction.
HUGE Julie-o by Mark summers influence
What a talent! Goosebumps!

Part of thumb position is also just using the thumb to press down the strings to a more playable height for the fingers as well
I'm pretty sure he comes from the cello and acapella scene mostly

oh Yeah, Speaking of Kevin from Pentatonix,
Pentatonix did collab with ATEEZ. you should check it out Ellis..😄
love Pentatonix since forever 🤣
He can rock a loop station quite well. Check out Down and Sign of the Times. Great reaction 👏🏽💜
Check out his Sings of the times…. I love it as well!
Great reaction and great explanation.

I watched it on your live stream, it was so good.
When I first discovered this guy, I was like, fuck he's already doing what I wanted to do but better
Btw I think it got him into pentatonix?
Yes, they saw a video he made that had like almost a million views, I believe, and invited him to join the group.
Check out KO "DOWN' then Kevins 5TH live
Awesome!
bye im back to work. thanks for the videos. have a great evening , have great time with the loved ones. God Bless✨
Check out his cover of Down by Marion Hill. He sings, plays cello and beat boxes and uses a looper. It’s crazy!
DO NOT DRAG TEH CELLO ARE YOU INSANE KEVIN

You need to check out some of his lives….
Oh hey I'm a cellist beatboxer I'm about to have some Opinions^tm
Also this beatbox recording is fairly heavily effected
Do more KO
