Some tough life lessons guys but your back home in our wonderful state - Just watched two Q&A sessions with ‘Redriven’ Jim Hull (auto mechanic business in Newcastle /Adam who presents the stories & Auto Expert ex motoring journey and engineering guru John Cadogan (Sydney) - this trio are one of the few honest auto industry professionals I’ve seen here in Australia and they know there stuff and then some - Jim was very strong about the mavericks out there pushing for ECU remapping etc the stresses that can put on the engine and drive train and unable to claim due to a void warranty - if you feel you have to do this your driving the wrong vehicle for towing safely you really need a diesel three litre or v6 minimum and never even with a GVM upgrade tow something heavier than you vehicle - a NSW chap is currently serving 6 years for killing his wife and another family member due to overloaded Prado & caravan - all the best for your next steps.
Thank you so much for the information. We'll check them out. Yes, have been told that your vehicle needs to be heavier than what you tow. That's terrible that people have lost their lives because of this - OMG. We have not found a vehicle yet that we are comfortable with doing the job and within our budget. Might be a while before we get back on the road sadly. Anya
@@madaussieadventures it’s not a great Christmas present Anya but ‘25 brings new opportunities for your ventures and choices - not easy when there are so many salvos flying across the horizon at you telling you this or that - I’m simply coming from a background in aviation and engineering so I’ve seen a high standard of engineering and have zero tolerance for anything less - unfortunately most premium brands are putting profit before people so your choices for quality and reliability are now limited - main thing is not to rush and I know your partner will digest as much research as possible - despite Toyotas DPF issue and new diesel V6 Landcruiser overheating issues (when towing you should be using at least 5W 30 engine oil not 0W 20 - the manufacture wants people to run this low viscosity to meet fuel economy standards) they’re still my go to brand for owner confidence and long term reliability over Ford, Isuzu and Mazda by a long way - Mitsubishi Triton is a good basic Ute and my second choice if only they had a 3 litre engine like the now extinct Pajero.
Yeah these modern engines are being pushed to the limits of physics because of environmental regulations, smaller displacements, higher rail pressures and advanced timing, gotta say you guys have a tremendous attitude you’d a lovely couple, good luck with everything
Not really. A good ecu remap will still keep the motor within its makers specs . All motors are sent from the factory in a detuned state to cover warranties and emissions as well as the highly variable temperature extrems in different countries. A mild retune can transform your vehicle. There many tens of thousands with remaps that run perfectly. I,d like to a decent mechanics report on what the motor to let go as I doubt the remap is responsible unless it was a high output remap.
@@iandickinson342 None of what you posted makes a difference if you have problems and you want the manufacturer to pay for them. I also really don't understand why so many feel the need to rush out and try and get more power out of their vehicles the whole time. People used to tow or go off road decades ago with a whole lot less power/torque than now and still managed to go around Australia or do the remote tracks. Maybe feeling like they need to drag their whole life with them is part of the problem? Do you do remaps by any chance?
I feel for you both, sadly these little engines often give in. Towing a big van needs a big car, not an air rammed Little four cylinder. I went with the v8 Patrol for the bigger motor and more weight in the tow car. Hope all works out for you.
I feel your pain guys. I have a stock standard 2020 79 series ute. I purchased it new and in the first year asked Toyota if they could install a pre-filter in the fuel line. They said no and said if I did it would void the warranty on the engine. I suggested that it would actually be beneficial for the fuel system but they were adamant it would enable them to walk away from any warranty claim that could be linked back to anything to do with the fuel. It may be possible to challenge them on it, but they've got a bit more money than me. Consequently I have left everything absolutely stock in every way. I hate not having the benefit of a pre filter, but I don't want to lose the 7 year warranty it came with. Best of luck with whatever decision you make.
Thanks for the comment. I can't believe the poor quality of cars these days and don't try to improve them..... warranty gone. Can't afford to challenge them, as you say. We are still making decisions on where to go from here. Anya
i have worked in dealerships and first thing they do when a vehicle is in for warranty is scan it see if any chips or ecu has been interfered with to void the warranty. downloads will even record if vehicle was overloaded causing chassis to bend or break etc
Lots of modern diesels are blowing up because manufacturers are specifying thin 0W oils with extended 10-15,000km 12month service intervals. This is what is killing motors. The only reason a manufacturer is specifying this oil is to meet the extremely stringent CAFE and Emissions standards that are being placed on them, which includes "oil consumption" over the life of the vehicle, that includes servicing, hence they have pushed it to the maximum limit with regards to getting that engine through the warranty period. Additionally the thin 0w oils edge out better fuel economy in testing, which is the only reason they use it, it's the completely wrong oil for our climate and for a heavy use diesel 4wd that is off-road or towing. Make no mistake, DO NOT go by the book on your new diesel and just service it every 5-7500kms, and go to a suitable 5w30 oil minimum! It's not hard, and will safe your motor. This is the same issue Toyota is having with the 300 series, and they are cooking bottom ends.
Firstly, thank you for the information. We have been hearing this a lot, especially getting the oil changed more often when towing. We won't deviate from the oil they recommend as we'll lose our warranty, however, I will question them on this. I have taken a note '5w30 oil' Cheers and thanks for watching - Anya
You guys have had a gut wrenching experience . The person who put that chip in the car is responsible for not informing you of the risk putting the pump under stress , the designing engineers had not allowed for this. Good luck with it all , and I hope you get back soon. I went the rooftop tent on a 8 x 4 basic trailer.... kitchen water , electrical , solar , longrange fuel tank all onboard Navara , a swag and awning for me and rooftop for Mrs Or grandkids or friends.... super light , no need for chip...(these cars are not meant to tow alot , they havent got the grunt). Drop the big fancy cara is my humble advice.
Thanks for your kind words. Yes, that poor little Ute. We love our rooftop tent. We have a lot of decisions to make. We'll be on the road soon to pick up the caravan.... yes, with the same triton - don't have a choice, but we'll nurse it home then work out what to do then. Thanks for watching, it really helps our little channel. Happy travels! Anya
To thin a oil and too long a service intervals in new deisels. have had a triton and towed everyday a builders trailer fully loaded it had 200 plus kms,I ran thick oil and changed it every 5 thousand km and changed fuel filters every 3/4 thousand it didn't miss a beat.but I never modified it either so mine was standard and manual.
So sorry to see what's happened. These types of vids are popping up on my feed. I watched one recently about a couple who blew their Prado engine. It was caused by a hole in their radiator, which had a chain reaction and catastrophic end. Insurance covered them because the hole could've been caused by a passing truck or car flicking up a stone. They were lucky to have their repairs under insurance. Really scares me as we are heading west for 3-4 months next year and seeing a few of these awful outcomes where good folk are stranded and thousands of dollars in repairs. 😢
Thank you! Unfortunately, this is furtherest we've travelled up to date and the first time anything major has happened and it's cost us around $25,000. All I can say is don't modify your vehicle so you don't lose your warranty, have RAA highest cover, make sure you have a reliable insurance company that will cover all your needs, and then it's in the hands of the gods! If we can afford to keep going, we will because we love it so much. Don't let my bad luck scare you from your adventures! 👍😎👍
Thanks for your comment. It's crazy how many engine issues there are of late. These people are very lucky to have such an outcome. Please be careful, make sure your weights are all good and DON'T do any mods to your vehicle. Safe travels and we hope you get go enjoy our beautiful country. Anya
Bugger, it is a great area up there. A friend travelled with a heavy van for 4 yrs no problem. Got a tune and ended up with a cracked piston next trip. 12k later all sorted. Wont be getting mine tuned.
an old mechanic taught me if you need to tune and remap an ecu ,and add on,s such as throttle controllers then you have brought the wrong car for the job ! nothing destroys any chance of manufacturers assistance than those kind of mods , aftermarket supplier will blame genuine and genuine will blame aftermarket ! don't forget to get it back to a dealer to restore the ecu to factory specs before it does it again
@@peter112999 I had an ML 3.2 as well, 260,000+klm still running very well when I sold it. I did give it a good flush out when I bought it at 205,000klm and ran like a clock. The 3.2 engine itself sold me as it was slightly improved for power by Mitsubishi for the Pajero but still not over tuned like their newer diesels. I said to my son the other day, its perfect...Its over engineered and under tuned.
Don't know about old school truck engines but my parents had a Pajero with the 4m40t and it did 5 engines in the space of getting to 450,000 3 rear diff housing that cracked 4 gear boxs after that none of our family has entertained the idea of owning a Mitsubishi since well to be fair it was compared against a landcriuser which is present at 9900000 on the same engine.
Brother I went through the same problem …cracked a piston and was stranded in Hervey Bay for 2 months while getting a fully record engine sorted ….additional $ 15000 and 3 k in accomodation wasn’t what I planned for a holiday …
I blame the big UA-cam "influences" for convincing people they need all the crap on their 4WD's. Usually sponsored by aftermarket companies. I don't blame smaller channels like you guys because your just out there having a go and not trying go sell us stuff. Hopefully you get your Triton back on the road and continue your trip.
Thank you. We always said we wouldn't push items for money. We are just out there trying to have fun and show places to stay. Knowing what we know now, we wouldn't have done the things we did. Thought we were doing the right thing! Hard lesson learnt. Andrea
I don't want to put any blame on the youtube presenters telling me what they use. I appreciate the sharing community. I learn so much and as an intelligent adult can do my research, get several opinions locally from mechanics/electricians esp if they have done this work b4 (not sales reps) and work out whether it suits for my kit.
Life’s a gamble but in this instance it wasn’t an accident, you’re both OK as is the van and in you never stop learning. Wish you both well and if the opportunity arises give it another go in the future. Vehicles are much more complicated nowadays and I’ve even resorted to carrying a scan tool if an error message pops up and the damn things go into limp mode. Never used to be like that. Cheers
Thanks for the comment. Totally agree - that's why we have a good attitude about the situation. Heard of a few people now that carry the scan tool. Anay
Really feel sorry for you two, remember you lost the fight not the war so don't give up get back out there as soon as you can and enjoy your life together. If I won the lotto I would pay your repair bill and give you some money to keep going. I would go myself except I am heading towards 80 and I have no one to go with. Ha ha 😅
Sorry to hear your breakdown you have a great attitude and that’s what counts … we’ve lost cash on a car too left stranded ….. it can just happen and I don’t like oil change intervals now it seems along time between oil change recommendations to me. I think you’ve been unlucky those trucks seem reliable in general not like garbage Landrover products , it’s hard work towing in Australia . I had a good twenty years towing with a 1991 f150 truck towing horses and overloaded hay and tractors on trailers and big boats and really thrashed that machine around Australia and nothing ever went wrong in all that time . But had cars which spent their lives on a tow truck . Had a great go with older landcruisers too I thought they were greatly reliable but too expensive now for average joe . Hope you resolve it one way or the other I can see you’re terrific people .
That is the sweetest and informative message - Thank you. It's so hard to find the right vehicle these days, that's not a ridiculous price - agree. Yes, have heard a lot about oil change intervals. You need to be a mechanic to travel Australia these days. We have learnt a lot from this, but finding the right solution for our budget is proving difficult - but we'll get there and hope it's not too long before we are back on the road. Thank you again for your kind words. Anya
Mate, we do, we've never asked for a cent from anyone and don't sell stuff. We just let everyone know the good and about travelling. All truth, no acting or lies. We stuffed up. That's our bad. No one could send us money even if they wanted too as we have no links. 👍😎👍
@grunkalunka3449 how are we ebegging? We haven't asked for anything, and even if you wanted to send us money, you can't as there are no links! We don't even sell merchandise! Have a lovely day!
Unfortunately not everyone knows or understands the remifications of modifying their brand new 4wd to travel and tow around Australia. Most if not all bands will knockback warranty claims on vehicles that have been modifyed from standard unless it has been approved by the manufacturer. Mods like GVM increases, Coil deletes, Heaver Springs/Coils and the list goes on, take your vehicle away from what the manufacturer has specified what the vehicle is rated at. There has been other instances of engines and transmissions ect, letting go with less than 5000km been done by the vehicle and when a warranty has been claimed they have been denied becacuse of the mods that have been done to the vehicles. So I guess pass the word along to anyone who is looking to do mods to check first to make sure that the warranty will not be voided by said mods. Good luck with your repairs and I hope that you continue your travels.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I think a lot of people have learnt from our mistake. We are currently looking into a new vehicle and getting the dealership do all the modifications before we collect the vehicle. Hopefully we'll have an update for all our viewers soon. Thanks for watching - Anya
that’s terrible news! I really enjoy your content and fantastic attitude, especially when given this devastating news! Best luck with second hand motor swap
Never good when you have dramas on hols. Mitsubishi has a pretty tough engine but depends on a lot of factors ie: tune upgrade, weights, driving style and fuel quality. Hope all works out for you. I run a standard 2022 Paj Sport Exceed and tow a 1.6 tonne Jayco fortunately no issues and tows like a dream. Don't forget tougher 4x4's than yours have gone bang, keep smiling.
Do you lock it in a certain gear when towing as it was always the case that locking out overdrive was the done thing in the past? I have a 2017 Sport but I don't tow with it so it has a pretty easy life other than a bit of light 4wd'ing.
I hope you manage to get over this setback and continue your travels because you’ve got a fantastic attitude to life. As a fellow Triton owner did the mechanic tell you exactly what happened to the engine as surely the ECU upgrade wouldn’t be the cause. Interested to hear meantime best of luck for the future.
I have looked at 21 engine failures in the past 12 months, 20 had been chipped or ECU remapped. 18 were towing at the time, all were pistons or heads. None of the fuel filters were what I would consider excessively dirty. Number 21 went 258,000 without a timing belt change and the belt only failed because the idler pulley seized. Keep it standard, change oil(make it one of the thicker ones) every 5000km and check the pickup screen, fuel filters every 10,000km, timing belts at recommended intervals. Use genuine parts where possible, supply your own just to be sure, don't listen to ol'mate at BBQ's or caravan parks who says mapping is the best thing they ever did. My D4D has done over 500,000km and hard ones..........dead standard ECU. Programming ECU's is easier than ever with the cheap software now available, every man and his dog is doing it and that is why the blowups are increasing INMHO. I have been programming PLC's and controllers for 20 years but make your own mind up.
I noticed the 2 large driving lights in front of the grill. This would reduce the air into the radiator. I watched a video of a Nissan that had done the same thing and the warranty was voided , the engine ghar 2 cooked cylinders.
Yes, i think this was a contributing factor and we also have a winch that's probably restricting airflow too. We are going to remove them. We've learnt a lot, but unfortunately it's cost us a lot for the lesson. 👍😎👍
Really sorry to hear of your problems. It's a brutal lesson to learn. I know there's so much misinformation around these days regarding how your warranty is affected by modifications. The fact is, you do anything to your vehicle's mechanicals or chassis, including suspension mods, lifts and of course catch cans or "tunes" you provide the manufacturer with a rolled gold excuse to deny a warranty claim. Of course, the modification may have nothing to do with the issue, but it's for you to prove otherwise unfortunately. There's no reverse onus warranty laws in Australia. Australian Consumer Law does protect consumers beyond warranty but it's no help in this situation.
I can't believe that companies grab your money and don't explain the consequences. I don't know how they sleep at night. Different if you know and happy to take a chance. Anya
I feel for you, the reason the motors are blowing is the re mapping. These shops re mapping are selling a product, knowing that it voids any warranty also the GVM upgrade would void it also, I bet they didn't tell you that. Love your attitude, Live Life, You Only Have one
We used to have a Mq. We had a scan gauge so I could see the water and oil temps etc. We towed 2300kg. Frightened me so sold and bought something more suitable.
@madgibbo44 they should. Our Ram 1500 does standard. Oil temp, oil presdure, water temp, transmission temp. What you need to know what you're vehicle is doing when under load.
Hi Gibbo, I am guttered for you. Trip of a life time cut short. Hey mate, did you have it chipped or remapped or both. Wishing you all the best, thanks for the raw and honest update. Hope you are back on the road soon. Lifes short, make the most of it and dont sweat the money, you can always make more but you cant get more time. Enjoy it while you have it.
Thanks heaps, bro, for the kind words! It was remapped. Big lesson learnt and now we will sell the triton and hopefully pick up a y62 patrol for the right price. We were looking into selling up everything, but as you said, life is more important than money, and this is our dream. 👍😎👍
I nearly went down the route of a Recurve ECU upgrade but then considered what the ultimate cost would be. More power equals more heat in the engine. Sorry to hear of your issues. I hope it works out in the end.
I was so close to doing the same engine upgrade to my mr triton, glad i didnt now, i figured, the gains seemed huge without any supporting mods, hope it all works out for u guys
How many of us have been caught out! Thank you so much for your comment. We are currently picking up our Triton, it's running well, but we have to decide what we do from here. You have the first intel on this 😉
I have done a couple of big road trips recently. One up to the Pilbara from Perth and the other over the Nullarbor. On both trips I was very struck by how many people had very heavily loaded (possibly overloaded?) vehicles towing big caravans. I do wonder if people are asking a bit much from these modern vehicles with their small displacement diesel engines. I think many people out there touring would benefit from an audit of what they are taking with them and a subsequent cull of stuff to get the weight back to a more sensible level. It really isn't necessary and is just materialism run out of control. The media these days would have you believe you need to buy and take all sorts of stuff with you. I suspect most people never or rarely use a lot of the stuff they load up with.
Yes, as someone who's new to caravanning and 4 wheel driving, I blame sales teams and dealerships for their misguided towing capacities. We are underweight, but that's still too heavy for these small motors. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. A very expensive lesson learnt! 👍😎👍
Thank you for your comment. We have minimal items in the caravan and what we have we use. Our weights are fine, however even though we thought the vehicle was capable of towing we have learnt a lot since. You do see a lot of travellers that appear to have everything under the sun and continually buy stuff along the way. It must be difficult for those travelling with a family of 4 or more. Anya
@@madaussieadventures I sounds as though you were unlucky. Mechanical problems are always a risk on big trips. I hope you are able to get back up and running with the new engine. As regards weight and excess stuff I suspect there will be a swing away from kitchen sink touring back to the more basic and economical touring style of yesteryear. I think people will begin to appreciate the benefits of that and anyway cost of living pressures will make anything else too expensive for most younger tourers.
Hey Gibbo, sorry to hear the engine has turned into such an ordeal for you we have been parked next to your van since it got hear just thought you'd like to know it's still safe and sound here.
Thank you, that's great to hear as we are over 2200km away. Hopefully the motor will be put in soon and we can travel home. See you when we get back if you're still there. 👍😎👍
I like that you notice the speed limits. I personally have found that the speed on the signs is intended to give you a decent ride. Sorry about your vehicle, it is hard when you are stuck like that. I will say i considered a remap, thanks for the warning. Messing with the computer seems to put the motor at risk. And that warranty is important. It may be that the remap was the cause of the failure, but i am personally glad you are both ok.
Thanks so much, that really means a lot. We got a bashing about 'you should have know better' but we had no idea and other have been caught as well. I'm glad you watched our video, so you know not to go down that path. Anya
@@madaussieadventures Should have known better is not a reason to criticise you about remapping. The internet has a lot on it about remapping because enthusiasts want more torque. The latest systems should give a warning or the guys that remapped your vehicle should have given you more warning. So much miss information out there by so called experts. You have saved a lot of people from that same pain. I thank you personally for telling every one of the true risks.
It's actually a very well known thing and even if they tell you that it is covered take it with a grain of salt from what I've seen. Even some pretty well known channels on here will imply that there won't be issues but that's not what I've seen. Even things like lifts and accessories can cause issues if you have a problem let alone pumping more horsepower out of the engine.
Lol as if anyone who's done even the slightest research on ECU tunes wouldn't realise that you can kiss your vehicle's drivetrain warranty goodbye in the case of engine or transmission failure!
Had the same thing happen to my Colorado after 150000 happy klms I got it remapped, was assured that it was a tow pack and well within specs. Didn't last 1000 klms. Mob who did the remap didn't want to know. Mechanic who did the inspection told me it was a common complaint. Get your engine remapped at your peril, remember if anything goes wrong you are on your own. Cost me over $20000.
Tweaking for peaking...or keep your loading light..I ve gone the light loading route..so far impressed with what I didnt "need". Fuel ,tyres , brakes are not so concerning now
Thank you, that's so nice. Hopefully we'll get ourselves sorted in the next few months. We have to get out there and enjoy nature any way we can - might have to put a backpack on and explore via the e-bikes LOL
@ I was just wondering if you had a bit of water in the fuel tank that you picked up from the Caltex petrol station ⛽️. That made the motor hydraulic lock up ,it only takes a bit of water to do that. 💧 .Most Diesel engines can handle it but some don’t. ..
I know the heart mate. Maiden voyage in our 16ft with our mq triton. Well within weights and I blew the clutch....cost us thousands $$$. All part of travel and at least we are safe.
Ugh that would hurt. Just interested as to what motor that was? The 2.5 or the newer 2.4? Brother in law had a much earlier 2.5 that had known issues and was well out of warranty but the dealer replaced it as it had been dealer serviced the whole time. I looked around for second hand for him but people still wanted stupid money for a very high mileage unit. Just wondering how much a new engine was as I have the 2.4 in a Sport and I just know that it would be an expensive little sod to replace.
Sure, did oldmate! It was the 2.4 and cost over $13 000 for a second-hand motor with the same mileage. The other option was $22 000 for a new motor. Unfortunately we have no choice as we have to bring the van home.
Unfortunately, most chips and remapping achieve additional power by increasing the pressure within the fuel system to increase the amount of fuel going into the motor at greater speed, but within the same milliseconds of injection This also generates additional heat. I use a Steinbauer which lengthens the period of injection and DOESN'T increase fuel pressure within the system. Had it for years on a 2011 Pajero 3.2, improved performance and m.p.g at the same time. Hope everything works out for you guys.
You'd think the remapper would say voids warranty in print. If no mention you might be able to get them to help with costs. No worries with companies doing remaps. Not telling you voids warranty is a fine line between legal/illegal. I'd get legal advice. Interested to know what failed?

There was a old case where a Dealership was fitting chips as a "add on extra"during the new car sales process,of course once the motors started blowing up,no warranty ,and the "Sales Consultant"who organised the chipping was hung to dry by the Dealership for running a unauthorised side hustle. If the chipping company is so crash hot lets see them warranty them without more excuses than a dogs got fleas
I feel terribly for you guys. There are many pushing do this, do that, you need this, you need that. My last 3 new 4x4 during purchase i speak to the service dept manager in view of mods. Toyota = tune or catch can definitely affect warranty. Catch cans are a clever marketing strategy 😅 You are the 2nd couple in as many weeks to blow and engine and get warranty rejected because of mods. To be honest, no one can blame the manufacturer for voiding a warranty if the motor has been tampered with outside of the engineering specs. The problem is, and I assume this is because it often goes in the manufacturers favour but they should sit you down as part of the hand over and tell you not to mod. My new dual cab, the dealer said and even suggested i put on bigger tyres. With the DMax bump steer issue, that minor change voids the warranty on bump ateer correction. I applaud your attitude, I really hope this gets sorted - legally, the manufacturer does have to prove the failure was due to the tune. But sadly, our pathetic legal and government bodies that should enforce this are weaker than wet rise paper. I hope that this doesn't ruin your dream.
This is a really good comment - thank you. If the motor industry were honest and fair - they should tell you that any mods will void your warranty - but they probably hope you have no idea - saves them the cost. We hope we'll get ourselves sorted in the New Year. Cheers to new beginnings xx Anya
@@madgibbo44 not done on a dyno? So it was just reflashed with no dyno runs to verify that everything was running as it should and the fuelling was not causing it to run too hot?
No tuning shop is go to warrenty a motor aside from factory backed vendors like Tickford and Walkinshaw (back in the day) and Harrod, yeah yeah im sure they say they will but when it comes to the end of the day they will turn around and blame somthing else but the tune and say it wasn't the resault of the tune. Play you pay been that way since the advent of working up engines.
Touch wood, my 2008 hilux d4d with 340,000 km is going strong. Simple motor, no emissions controls, it's the new motors with all the electrics and emissions that die
Hi guys, you are correct in your assessment of modern automobile engine disasters. No manufacturer is immune. Nowadays, the accountants are running engineering. Boeing Aircraft Corporation is a great example of cost cutting. The truth be known, engines have become smaller, weigh less, and produce more power. This is not a formula is durability. A touring couple I know, in the last few years have had, Prado x2 a BT50 a Ranger and in two cases engine failures. The most durable engine is made from all cast iron. One example is the Toyota 1HD FTE. Hands down this is one of Toyota best. This is why the 100/105 series diesel Land Cruiser is still commanding such a high price. Don't worry about it not being new, these are made to last. Stay clear of the newer later model. Have you considered a Mitsubishi Canter? Cheers PS: That said, the long duration of modern service intervals is a big contributor to these failures. No matter what the dealer or the book says, diesel engine oil should be changed every 5,000klm, most importantly turbo diesels. Cheers
Wow, that was some really good information. Thank you for taking the time. Actually makes me feel a little better, because we were at a loss for a solution. I'm actually worried in travelling back from Queensland to SA, it's going to be a nervous drive. Andrea
absolutely correct, long time frames between oil changes are just stupid, its hell in those engines, its a wonder that they don't break down all the time, I change the oil 5000 because these engines now are built to a low price, old lancruiser engines, old ford v8's go on seemingly forever. Ive got a little Prius with a steel block and that's gone cairns to Darwin , then Darwin to Sydney then to perth where we live now as well as being a daily driver, bloody little thing seemingly going forever with 5000 km oil changes. you're absolutely right
Whats the ECU upgrade do? More fuel/air? If so it's high risk that you will be beyond what the manufacturer recommends for longevity. Add on towing = more fuel plus heat.
@@madaussieadventures well there are so many company's doing tunes. Call or go see them. You were going by what they recommended for your vehicle and towing. Did they have a disclaimer? Manufacturers spend millions on R and D drive trains fuel economy etc. Bet the tuner does not do that. Lots just increase fuel and air to give more power. The components are not designed for this. Tunes and chips need to be called out for this. Company's claims about so called safe tunes should back up those claims with warranties.
@@madgibbo44damned if you do, damned if you don’t! Give the secondhand engine a go, if you can get as much history information as possible on it, and it’s impeccable, odds are you’ll be fine. Good luck with it.👍
No hating here mate just a question, you had me on side with your weights and everything until you said you had a gvm upgrade, your car and motor and gearbox are recommended to tow a certain weight , an upgrade allows you to go above that, not sure thats a good idea, hope everything works out for you two, with your outlook on life i think it will, cheers
I'd put money on the reason for the engine blowing is oil failure. Modern engines are running super thin oil to improve emissions and economy. They aren't factoring in heavy towing loads and the hot Australian weather. New 300 series cruisers are lunching engines under 20,000kms for this reason. If you tow, change your oil every 5000kms even if you do it yourself on the trip. Always use a minimum of 5w30w or 5w40w even on modern engines.
@@russianbotstein1422 I agree mate the oils are going too long until they’re changed these new oil change intervals don’t make any sense at all, proof is in the pudding with my cars they last a long time with 5000 oil changes.
Just wondering If you change your Tires to a real A/T Tires would that constute a modification to Void Warranty, I seem They Look for any excuse nowadays to void!
Well that`s bad luck . A word of advice almost any modification to a vehicle gives the manufacturer an avenue to try and weasel out . Have u tried the ECU upgrade company whats there impression ??? Car makers even refuse warranty with conventional spot lights as it restricts airflow . Includes shade cloth across grills and decorative grill replacements. The increase in price for transport for a 4x4 is alot higher than passenger car . Then add a premium when non driver smells of a ripoff Good travels
"weasel out" yeah okay you've remapped the engine and now it's not the same engine that left the factory and it's hasn't been tested or rated to the new specs and there's all worst of implications in terms of operating temperatures and exhaust temps and turbo temps and ignition timing and yet you want the manufacturer to say nahh it's all good mate, we'll cover it even though you've fiddled around with it? Come on, fair's fair, how do you expect that?!
Personally I would not modify a car in warranty at all , but thats my own view . But I do have sympathy for those that get denied warranty all the same . Biggest issue is most 4x4 seem to have some issues and do not like mods. injectors , clutches ,pistons gear box/transmission , diff gears , burnt up LSD clutches . etc etc
Nothing like Bad News to bring in the views. I must admit you're the 4th video I have watched with Bad News when it comes to Enjoying Life on the road in a Caravan. It's just an unfortunate reality that your average SUV isn't really up to the job when it comes to Towing. But saying that, you're not really pulling that much weight ?? I guess it's just the extra strain on the engine that seems to make these videos so popular on UA-cam 😅 ( I couldn't help mention that 😉) Hopefully you get things sorted and back on the road where you want to be 👍
We didn't expect that amount of views LOL We just tell it how it is - people love drama. 'Buy a caravan and travel' they said 'it will be fun' they said! 😄😅😊😳
You made up and down the bruce hwy that's a "tick" . With that ECU mapping.. did you get the car serviced by Mitsubishi after you had it done. If you did, they have a duty of care to tell you about the warranty. Anyway, you're safe that's important. everything happens for a reason, I think. Hope you get back on the road soon.
when you buy the car new its on the paperwork plus detailed twice in the owners manual and in the service schedule that any modifications will void warranty
@@madgibbo44I know what I would be doing then just out of principal ... what actually occurred with the engine was it a catastrophic part failure or something other ... bad publicity you think would be worth more than the 15 odd Grand to replace the Donk ... depending of course what occurred interesting business model to say the least. ....... 🫸 Mitsubishi

Sorry to hear what happened, did they give a reason for the motor blowing up? Was it fuelling up due to the tune? Not being a smart arse just curious as I hear this with a number of tunes on various models. All the best and hope it works out. Mark.
Yep…I wouldn’t get a tune for mine ( V6 Everest) because of warranty… and I don’t believe in these long oil changes they now recommend…. 10000k’s or less… especially if your towing
Bit of disaster mate, but at least you're breathing You really have to be careful modifying these late model cars And the dealers know , find out when they scan the car any excuse not to pay out
So what actually happened to the engine? Always worth checking that remaps are covered under warranty, in any country. In my experience altering the map of the car is normally ok, but it depends on what the actual figures they put in. but a map can only do so much towards killing an engine, if the reason is not map related, it may be covered depending on local law, it is likely to be here, but that's the other side of the planet to you guys. It really is worth having the original ECM and map until the warranty is up, whether you have another ECM is another question, I know some of the guys here do, I intend to have 3 ECM's for travels, you never know what might go wrong.

That's so nice - thank you. Not sure where we'll go from here. Anya
Keep well away from chips & remaps.
The most reliable vehicles are stock vehicles.
Yep, lesson learnt
Why didn't you tell me that before! 🤣😂
@oldbloke204 well said, keep them stock they are more reliable. Buy the vehicle to suit, keep it legal and at the very least less dramas
I feel for you both, sadly these little engines often give in. Towing a big van needs a big car, not an air rammed Little four cylinder. I went with the v8 Patrol for the bigger motor and more weight in the tow car. Hope all works out for you.
Thank you. It's great to hear what others are towing with successfully. Anya

Thank you so much xx We'll get back out there - even if we're camping but naked under a tree. LOL
Thank you. Yes, we've learnt to leave everything standard so as not to void the warranty. 👍😎👍
Thanks for the comment. I can't believe the poor quality of cars these days and don't try to improve them..... warranty gone. Can't afford to challenge them, as you say. We are still making decisions on where to go from here. Anya

Thanks - we are trying so hard to get back on the road, but are constantly being thrown a curveball. Lets hope it all works out. Anya
i have worked in dealerships and first thing they do when a vehicle is in for warranty is scan it see if any chips or ecu has been interfered with to void the warranty. downloads will even record if vehicle was overloaded causing chassis to bend or break etc
Yes, lesson learnt. Interesting about the overloaded part. Thanks for commenting. Andrea
Cheers, very interesting.
Surely you have at least a 3 month warranty on that, as deemed by law, if you bought it from a legitimate business.

@@madaussieadventures No worries

Cheers, that's so true!
Love your comment. Yes, your right. Have to admit the mighty trighty did well - unknowingly, no fault but our own. :(
Do you lock it in a certain gear when towing as it was always the case that locking out overdrive was the done thing in the past?
I have a 2017 Sport but I don't tow with it so it has a pretty easy life other than a bit of light 4wd'ing.
I hope you manage to get over this setback and continue your travels because you’ve got a fantastic attitude to life. As a fellow Triton owner did the mechanic tell you exactly what happened to the engine as surely the ECU upgrade wouldn’t be the cause. Interested to hear meantime best of luck for the future.
Cheers! The minute they found it was ecu upgraded, they instantly wiped us.
Piston failure, but they'll use any excuse to get out of warranty.

Yep, we're on it!
Thank you. Yes, we'll be going stock standard next time that's for sure. I can't believe people do so much to their new cars knowing this.

Thank you for your comment. We have minimal items in the caravan and what we have we use. Our weights are fine, however even though we thought the vehicle was capable of towing we have learnt a lot since. As regards weight and excess stuff I suspect there will be a swing away from kitchen sink touring back to the more basic and economical touring style of yesteryear. That's hilarious - I can't believe you guys are still there. Good to know our van is safe - thank you. Hoping we'll be back in a week. 🙂
Thanks heaps!
We are hoping this helps others to look into remapping better than what we did. I definitely would never remap again.
👍😎👍
Thanks so much, that really means a lot. We got a bashing about 'you should have know better' but we had no idea and other have been caught as well. I'm glad you watched our video, so you know not to go down that path. Anya
@@madaussieadventures Should have known better is not a reason to criticise you about remapping. The internet has a lot on it about remapping because enthusiasts want more torque. You have saved a lot of people from that same pain. I thank you personally for telling every one of the true risks.
I’m surprised the tuner didn’t tell the warranty would be voided
Exactly!!

@ I was just wondering if you had a bit of water in the fuel tank that you picked up from the Caltex petrol station ⛽️. That made the motor hydraulic lock up ,it only takes a bit of water to do that. 💧 .Most Diesel engines can handle it but some don’t. ..
@@paultabone2010 that's we were wondering too.
Hey guys. We have a mq and we done a motor as well. Was it a burnt piston in number 4 cylinder.

What was the reason?
Yep I know quite a few Mitsubishi at work have blown up so they won't bye them anymore.
Yep, never again.
When I travel around Australia my Triton I've got a fuel separator.
And a catch can.

Catch can is the easiest way to void a warranty. Extra crankcase pressure can blow out seals and put oil into the intake via the turbo. Not worth it.
I know the heart mate. Maiden voyage in our 16ft with our mq triton. Well within weights and I blew the clutch....cost us thousands $$$. All part of travel and at least we are safe.
Yes, always look on the bright side. xx
Sorry to hear, yeah it's not a great feeling. Cost us over $20,000 all up.
If the head is ok you might be able to get away with a short block but depends on who is doing the build and what available.
Second-hand motor being installed soon - already arranged. Given we have to fly home we had to get something sorted out quickly.
Yes, but unfortunately, it's over 2200km away as we've had to fly home and work.
👍😎👍
Unfortunately, most chips and remapping achieve additional power by increasing the pressure within the fuel system to increase the amount of fuel going into the motor at greater speed, but within the same milliseconds of injection This also generates additional heat. I use a Steinbauer which lengthens the period of injection and DOESN'T increase fuel pressure within the system. Had it for years on a 2011 Pajero 3.2, improved performance and m.p.g at the same time.
Hope everything works out for you guys.

Worth speaking to the where the ECU tune was done to see what they will cover?
Looking into it.
I feel terribly for you guys. There are many pushing do this, do that, you need this, you need that.
My last 3 new 4x4 during purchase i speak to the service dept manager in view of mods. Toyota = tune or catch can definitely affect warranty. Catch cans are a clever marketing strategy 😅
You are the 2nd couple in as many weeks to blow and engine and get warranty rejected because of mods.
Thanks heaps, it comments like this that really help! 👍😎👍
This is a really good comment - thank you. If the motor industry were honest and fair - they should tell you that any mods will void your warranty - but they probably hope you have no idea - saves them the cost. We hope we'll get ourselves sorted in the New Year. Cheers to new beginnings xx Anya

Cheers
PS: That said, the long duration of modern service intervals is a big contributor to these failures.
Andrea
Thank you!
Awesome advice and yes I think we'll definitely get rid of triton and look into the right second-hand vehicle.
👍😎👍
absolutely correct, long time frames between oil changes are just stupid, its hell in those engines, its a wonder that they don't break down all the time, I change the oil 5000 because these engines now are built to a low price, old lancruiser engines, old ford v8's go on seemingly forever.
Yes, overheating was an issue.
Unfortunately, we were told the opposite. Otherwise, we wouldn't have done it. 👍😎👍

Warranty wasn't actually discussed or listed. Do you think we'd have a leg to stand on given it was a piston failure? (Genuine Question) Andrea
Yeah, big lesson learnt.
We have learnt so much from this experience. Thank you for the comment. We want to keep travelling but we have a lot of hurdles to deal with. Anya
Hey Mate, was the car dyno tuned or was this an off the shelf tune?
No, not dyno tuned just ECU remapped.
Thank you so much for the tip - we have been getting a lot of feedback about this. Anya

No real idea as they blame the ecu tune and wiped their hands with us.
Then add a premium when non driver smells of a ripoff

We did touch bases, but may have to investigate further. Cheers
Biggest issue is most 4x4 seem to have some issues and do not like mods. injectors , clutches ,pistons gear box/transmission , diff gears , burnt up LSD clutches . etc etc
