I have been here! It was about twenty years ago. I met a lovely Russian lady in Tallinn, and she wanted to show me her home town. She told me that if you mispronounce the name you have a Russian word for “vomit”. We travelled in a public minibus from central St Petersburg. We visited her grandmother in her cottage on the outskirts. We watched women washing clothes in the river. A memorable visit. Great to see how it looks here now.
No matter how you will mispronounce “Tosno” it will not even close to a Russia word for “vomit”.
I must have misunderstood what she said. I wonder what word she had in mind?

She probably meant the word "тошно" (tochno), but why did she say that?...I wouldn't even think of the word nauseous when I thought of the city of Tosno. Apparently, some foreigners pronounce the letter S as Sh and it turns out to be tochno (Nauseating) instead....
Have you thought about visiting the Mari-El republic of Russia? They have lovely music, a simple rustic lifestyle, cheerful pretty ladies, nice folk clothes and interesting legends; as you know it is not far from Nizhni Novgorod, and on the way to Kirov I think.

I cannot imagine how cold it must be there. It's 40°c average temperature all this week in the southwest part of Australia where I live. Sadly in this region during the winter months we never see snow.

В Тосно была в юности, ездила в универмаг недалеко от станции.
Кстати, Коломяги имеют особый шарм. Эклектика старинных домов, стильных коттеджей и высоток. Летом, как в деревне (зажиточной)😊

Regarding shopping centres- some will be coming from an eatery then going back to work or could on the way home have a quick look at an item then think about it before going on a day off to either buy it or look elsewhere in the centre. So many reasons to not have shop there and then.

Снимите г. Отрадное-на-Неве, у нас красивая набережная, хорошая зона отдыха в лесу, летом почти у каждого дома- клумбы с цветами, .... Мне у нас нравится.

If you’d watched the video you would see that people are living here as in the separate single-family homes, as in apartment buildings. People mostly own their houses or apartments.
I also live in St. Petersburg. The vast majority of people live in apartment buildings. During the Soviet Union time people used to receive apartments for free, for living, they only paid for utilities. The wait for receipt was 3-6-7 years. While they were waiting, people lived in communal apartments. There were no homeless people. After 1991, they received these apartments free of charge as their own property. It was called privatization.
Apartments are rented mainly by those who come from other cities, but they also try to take out a mortgage and pay for their own, not rental housing. And this is a profitable investment. My apartment in a building built in 2005 then cost $30,000, now it’s more than 75,000. In addition to the apartment, many residents of St. Petersburg (and other large cities) have a “dacha.” This is a plot of land, often 600 square meters, with a house, a bathhouse, garden, greenhouses. Everything is built from wood-logs, no drywall. My parents are retired and spend their summers there. These are entire “cities” of plots, in this case, about 30,000 together, if I’m not mistaken.
